Too late Dylan - I was in Newcastle this morning and almost called in to see Donn, only when I rang him he was out. Could have made it happen and picked it up for you if I knew.

Hey Dylan,

I just had a 1600 built locally and while I am happy with the end result, I kinda wished I had spent that little bit more and gotten a 1915 built up instead. I think Penrose is selling them for around $4500 - I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. But it was only a little more than I spent on my 1600 TP dual carb set up and it would be more fun in the long run. If I had the budget I would have stretched, and if I had the luxury of time I would have waited and spent it on what I wanted.

Just some advice that I have had to relearn time and time again - Get what you want the first time, instead of something that will do and then replacing it later.

Anyway - Keep the updates coming!

Sorry Dylan, (no I'm not ) the one I have isn't quite as deep and no cut outs for fog / driving lights, not as bulky, if interested send me your email and I'll send you a pic. This one's fiberglass and looks like it had a rubber strip around it which I'm certain I have

Hey Mate,
In Regards to Engine, it can get very costly and $4k - $8k is too much for me to spend on a vw motor that only gonna last about 100,000km if that some if there done wrong don't last long at all. So i will be investing in a Subaru conversion but i have the 1600cc TP here im going to ''tune'' and hot up a bit with a set of Kadron twin carbs, extractor exhasut system, some high ratio rockers and valve work? and then ill dress it up with some bits and pieces and a 36hp style doghouse fan shroud.

Speak for yourself!

I put 90000km on the old engine in my Baja. It was a second hand no history 1300sp. It could have done a million miles before I got it. And frequently got worked very hard offroading.

Provided you do regular servicing, look after the engine and drive it properly there's no reason why it won't last a lot longer than 100000km. Just my opinion.

Mate yeah i understand where your coming from and yes the vw engine is very strong and just goes and goes and goes. But what im saying is to get performance and HP you need to spend big and then the engine life span is shortened. So a 1915/1916 or a 2332cc engine usually only lasts just over 100,000km i have been told. Thats why Subaru is the way to go for me (:

But untill then my 1600cc Twin Port motor will get a bit of tuning.

Rear end Lowering

Lowered the Rear of the bug today with Jeff Walsh, We used Joels Thread, Gregory's Superbug manual and some good ole common sense. Everything went easy and we lowered it by 55mm and we archived perfectly our aim of 200mm rear hight. Was great to have it at a nice ride hight that i wanted so im happy i got that done now. I will post up some pictures of the car when i can bring it out of the shed next. (Stepdads Boat is parked infront of the shed on the concrete slab) I will have to arange to have it moved before i can bring the bug out again.

Before

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/7093/dscf2832o.jpg

Then Jeff came around and we pulled the rear end apart and reset the torsion bars to new degrees giving new height.

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/768/dscf2897i.jpg

It's 60mm Lower now and is a perfect height.

UPDATE - Temp Paint Job!

Hey everyone!

I have now lowered the front and installed all new parts and lowered the back it now drives again! Although it looks bit rough and Ratty at the moment due to different Body pannels resulting in different colours on the car. So to tidy it up a bit im doing a temperary Paint job of flatt black so i cant get it back on the road and have fun driving it! $4000-$6000 for Paint and pannel work is outa my budget right now so when i can save up the money to get the profesional paint job i want of the blue then i will get it doen later down the track.

Temp Paint Job Update

Well heres where the bugs at. Been really busy and havent been on here much but it in the process of being painted flatt black. It not a show winning paint job but its more of a ratt rod kinda look. It's just to get it on the road and then as time goes on the evolution on this car will be huge.

I Have Been too caught up in making the bug look good, Getting the body straight and so on. But now i have woken up a bit. No more Bodywork, Yes it's ruff it's not real straight or perfect. But i dont care how ratty it is cause as long as its low, loud and mean looking (and main thing, on the road) So The Car is going back together now, and will be fixed to roadworthy state. Not that much to get it Blue sliped, It's more the money for rego i have to save. So i will be keeping the page up to date when i can.
