I'm a bit suss on the DSG equipped cars, there seems to be more reliability issues with those boxs than most. But I have spoken to a few owners who have had no problems in high mileage golfs and caddys. Sorry, it was only june that the golf was number 4 in oz. But year to date figures show VW outselling honda, subaru, kia and suzuki etc.

Interesting to re-read this thread in the light of VW's current apparent woes.
We were so impressed by the T. dealership and so unimpressed by the VW one that we (sad to say) just had to buy the T. Glad now as it's performed flawlessly and service has been excellent. And it's been cheaper overall. "Toyota is the new VW."

Hey Phil if your looking I think Bill Buckle in Brookvale (Northern Beaches) is a VW dealer (amongst a number of other marques).

Yes it's a shame. Oldies like me had to watch VW sell their factory in Melbourne, then fade out of Australia altogether for over the next 15 years. Then we saw VWs imported by a series of independent importers interested only in their bottom lines, with total sales only a few hundred a year. That's why you don't see many used VWs for sale from the '80s and early '90s here - they didn't sell them new in the fiirst place.

Finally with VW Group Australia formed in 2001, fully owned by VW Germany, we expected VW to return properly to our market after a long absence. Hooray! Yes sales have been very good, up to 55,000 a year now and even higher than the glory days of the Australian-made VWs of the 1960s. But issues like a proper dealer chain, properly trained dealer staff, and reasonablly priced parts and service, have not been addressed. Sydney still only has 10 VW dealers (over 30 in the air-cooled days), and many country centres still don't have a VW dealer. Fixed-price servicing has been introduced, belatedly, but VW used to have that in the 1960s. Parts are still way too dear. I was recently quoted over $1000 by Barloworld for Golf 3 power window reguators. I can get them on Ebay for under $100 each.

Yes Ben I know about Bill Buckle, but I was thinking of the NORTHERN beaches - VW used to have Youngs Motors at Collaroy, and G Brothers at Mona Vale. Still no VW dealer in Bankstown/Canterbury, or the St George district, or the Eastern suburbs, or the Hills district.

Yes there were no VW passenger cars offered between 1980 and 1990. The only thing available was the type 25s.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

No such thing as a type 24. You are getting confused with the model number. eg. 242 Pick Up RHD etc.

VAG called them all Typ 25. Like yours is a Type 21.

This is a distraction from the topic.

Volkswagen refers to mine as a Type 2 (in general), but it ain't a Type 21. That's a panel van. Mine is a Type 23, window Kombi as the chassis number specifies. A Microbus is a Type 22, a pickup is a Type 26. 'Typ' is German for 'Type'.

For the T3 Transporter the types were changed - '25' is the van/kombi/microbus and the '24' is the pickup. Volkswagen only referred to the vans as Type 25. Post us a photo of your T3 twin cab's VIN, or the detailed manufacturer's label, and highlight where it says '25'.

Digits 7 and 8 of the VIN clearly specify the VW model (or type) code. A post-'80 Golf 1 has 17 there. A Mexican Beetle has 11. Whether you call them a Model 11 or a Type 11, or Model 17 or Type 17, is up to you. Yes there are additional codes on top of the two prime digits, but that's not the issue.

VIN has nothing to do with it. You are getting confused with model and type. There is no such thing as a type 23 or 24. You are assuming things. You have a type 21.

What?! My chassis number begins 23, so I have a Type 23. Or if you want to be a pendantic hair-splitter, it's a Type 2 Model 23. Or a Type 2 Model 234 (left-hand sliding door, RHD). Which you can call a Type 234. And so on with paint codes and M codes and so forth.

Nothing to do with '21'. It's NOT a Type OR model 21. What references you can present to show me otherwise, rather than say-so?

Homework: A T4 Transporter is a model 70 according to its VIN. What is its 'Type' then, if 'Type' is different as you claim? Don't say 'T4' - that indicates its generation in the line of Transporters.

Why are you relating to the VIN?

After around 1990 they changed the definitions to A, B, C, T etc. There was never any T1,T2 or T3 Transporters before that.

So then a 3 generation Golf was A3, 4th generation Transporter was a T4, simple! Before that they had Type 19 for the 2nd generation Golf etc. Type 11 for standard Beetle and type 13 for struts etc.

Why? Because that's what the chassis number MEANS. Example: 2342nnnnnn

First digit means Type 2 (Volkswagen Transporter). No argument there?? Second digit - 3 (Kombi van). This is where a panel van has 1, Microbus will have 2, etc. Third digit - year (4 means 1974). Fourth digit 2 - differentiates from the previous decade.

Digits 1 and 2 were later transfrerred to the VIN in positions 7 and 8. Digit 3 also moved to the VIN, in position 10. So a 1980 Golf with a chassis number of 17A nnnnn became a 1981 Golf with WVWZZZ17ZBWnnnnn. Same info and same principle.

So if the chassis number says my Kombi is a Type 23, then that's what it is.

Generational tags are not the same as model/type. Yes the Golfs are 'A1', 'A2', 'A3' etc, just as the Passats are 'B1', 'B2' etc, and Transporters are 'T1', 'T2' etc. That's fine, that tells you what 'generation' they were. But the A1 Golf is still a Type 17 (or Model 17, they are the same thing), and a B2 Passat wagon is still a Type 33 (or model 33). There are several Type/Model codes for the Polo - 86, 87, 6N, 6R, 9N - but no 'generation' code apart from your favourite Mk1, Mk2 etc. The Tiguan is a Type 5N and an Up! is a Type AA. Or Model 5N and Model AA. Whatever. Same thing.

Back on track - I just heard that Audi has followed VW's DSG recall this afternoon.
