Ok the wash was that I did not need a new engine. Said the timing was out and the gap in the points needed adjusting. Also the air filter was not allowing enough air in so he replaced that. Suspected on of the main issues was that the fuel line had a kink in it that restricted the fuel flow. Not sure how that could have happened all of a sudden.
Adjusted the tappets, replaced fuel line and filter and a few other things not really related.
All up cost me about $850. Cheaper than a new engine but couple that with the $1700 I paid a few months ago I would have been better off getting new engine. Hindsight huh????

The air filter is something I have never seen before. Big red foam type that requires oiling every 5,000ks. I think I will replace that with something a little more conventional.

The car is the best it ever has so fingers crossed....

Thanks for all the advice and help.

John

Scary to think a mechanic just went straight for the full re-build card when all that was wrong really was a few service items and a dodgy fuel line.... got to be careful hey.... good to hear though.
