Thanks for the pics guys..
Joel,
I couldn't remember whether the 1/4 window was painted or not... I see they were..
In Your pic they have fitted I believe an early sun visors which are connected to the rear vsion mirror mount..
You can see the roundish pressings on the roof for the later model sun visors..
I don't think many people would have liked having one sun visor..lol
Did they have a horn ring or just the flat horn bar same as later models??
maybe a painted horn ring??
I also note the bright rim around the speedo in the standard
was that normal?? just the polished aluminium??
but notice no chrome strips on the dashboard...
putting the glovebox lid on was the hardest thing to do as they came out of the dash on long arms that went thru rectangular holes in the dash..
not many people liked to cut into the dash of their beetle..lol
was the steering wheel /column etc all black
in standards?? in Customs??
did the standards have painted headlight rims ??
and painted blinker tops??
and from memory.. they had a plug where the windscreen washer nozzle went... [one of the locals still has it]
cheers
LEE
PS: I love memories.. lol just can't remember all of them.. lol

the 66-67 Aussie Beetles had the pressing for the later visors but still kept the old mirror mounted ones, although from ad below seems like even
customs only had a drivers visor.
Geez, another time warp custom, who would have thought it
Looks nice and original too

OK Final question... maybe..??
did the standards have the outside door window scraper with the aluminium bright strip as per the deluxe models ??
if so, was that a special part?? or just painted black???
Glovebox lids must have been worth a lot of money in 1963 [model year] ..lol
chrome must have been getting more expensive too???
LEE
PS: I suppose the orders were :
"OK Guys, See if You can take 100 pounds [money pounds] of gear off a beetle and see what it looks like..." lol ??

Some pics of inside a 66? Aussie Standard I took at Valla 2010.
It should have no fuel gauge and a black steering wheel.
Hard to find interior light block off plate. Tar76's car is an early Aussie Standard and does not have a hole for this.

65 if the door panels are original.
64 and earlier had the plain ribbed vinyl like 5lam posted above and 66 and later had glovebox lids.

I remember my Oldman telling me recently that back in Germany his best mate had a bug in the late 60's which was the belmont pov pack with cable
brakes and zero interior or chrome which made our custom model look good in comparison.

Yes, Many Germans liked the lower price of the Standard model which had cable brakes YIKES and was still 6 volt and looked like an early beetle and
kept the 1200 engine
for many years..
the Germans liked the bare car at a Bare price.. lol
very plain with most things painted..
well everything painted NO Chrome at all
I have a photo of one somewhere..

German Postal service used to use them too.
They built them using all the old left over parts
even in the mid 60s they still had 50s 36hp engines, complete with 60s fresh air heater system...

Here is a quote from Rod and Lloyd Davies excellent book Volkswagen in Australia about early Standard Beetles.
"Offered in three paint finishes of blue, grey or white ironically, extra effort was needed at the factory to produce these seemingly cheaper cars. In
their early days, painted lines were hand crafted, where the stainless steel mouldings were fitted. This idea was eventually abandoned, due to lack of
coach painters willing to endure this endless task".
58camper said the first standards were releasted 30th Aug 62 that would make them 63 models in Blue,Grey or white? So maybe a Turquoise one with a
side stripe painted on is an early 64? That would make the brochure from samba I posted earlier correct.
The 63 Bathurst cars seem to be from this first batch of Standards. Here is a link to my favorite piece of footage of a Aussie early Standard Beetle.
The 62 around Australia record breaking car. You can see the painted side stripe. Some one buy the footage and give it to me

turquoise FEB? '63 std.
click on the pics to enlarge them.
the day it arrived.
i think mine had pin striping around the bonnet badge and in the recesses of the bonnet. this could have been added at the dealer, they fitted a fuel
gauge and an interior light.
the window rubbers are normal grooved rubbers without the trim fitted.
the rear carpet was shorter only coming down to the back of the seat backrest.
if anyone has a spare beading that runs down the inside of the B pillar i'm interested.

I have seen early standards with non chrome door handles inside and out. I have only seen a couple and they were white. I don't know about blinkers
and head light rims. If the first Aussie standards came out 30th Aug 1962 these would have been 63 models.
I'm not sure when turquoise cars came out latter 63 or as 64 models.
Henry did you get Feb 63 from some sort of Wolfsburg records? Wolfsburg records can only be used as a guide for Aussie cars. If you did I think your
car would have built in Australia and given its number some time after that. If your car has the original speedo the date it was made is on the back
of it. Your car was build after the speedo by maybe a few months.

Don't use Wolfsburg production dates for Australian production. The August-July model year does not apply to Australian-built VWs.
30th August 1962 is a 1962 model. ALL of 1962 is a 1962 model. The Australian 1963 model (and every 'new year' model) didn't start until the
following February, once the factory workers camne back from the Xmas/New Year holidays.

No white piping on the interior trim.....I have a second interior which does??? later car I think??

It's hard to know because so many were updated over the years but when you see some of the old press photos of 63 standards they have all those
chromed and just the hubcaps and bumpers painted, go figure.
Although it wouldn't have been the only occasion VWaus dressed up cars for press photos.
My teachers completly untouched 64 only had the hubcaps and bumpers and quarterwindows painted and rest was chrome.

Can't remember a painted engine lid handle but they were non locking.. [that is only My memory]
I thought I had seen the headlamp rims painted black??
the colour of the hubcaps and bumpers was a terrible colour from memory.. silver with a lot of black in it..?
NO stainless strip on the running boards looked terrible back then too... lol IMHO..
I can't ever remember painted door handles..
as the paint would have came off after the buttons were pushed a few hundred times..
