WPVW guest driver for 2013 @ WSID is Andrew Makin from Melbourne VIC . I believe Andrew has attended the VW drag racing series on many occassions and never had the opportunity to drive at any of the events .

well , Andrew Makin is still going to make the trip up from Melbourne to drive the WPVW sports sedan @ WSID VW drags .

So preparation has started on the sports sedan , cause we have so much spare time on our hands .
The rear body section has been removed and the heads & barrels removed for a quick refreshen .

Unfortunately we have discovered that the heads that I modified for this car in 1995 are finally buggered . They have been ported , bored , thrashed , won 2 Australian titles , cracked , welded , put on the oval with a turbo , thrashed , rewelded , thrashed lots more , and now are finally going to be put on the shelf as a trophy .

Tonight I started on another pair of spare heads with 48x38 valves that had been used on Deans beetle when it was N/A .

the heads are badly cracked in 3 chambers at the spark plug holes and all 4 inlet seats are pulling into the heads .

I enlarge the exhaust ports on another set of heads & start porting them

last night I finished porting the heads for the sports sedan , check the sealing of all of the valves and lapped them all into their seats , refaced and flycut the heads so that they are now ready for a good clean & assembly

tonight Dean stripped and serviced both the weber carbs for the WPVW sports sedan .
We found that the E85 race fuel had turned to jelly in the carbs cause it has been left too long not used .
Both carbs cleaned up beautifully so Andrew should have a great day driving this car with smooth throttle response

How were the pump diaphragms and all the rubber o rings and seals with the E85?

The diaphrams & orings were all fine , not effected by the E85 . The fuel has been left in the fuel system in the sports sedan previously for a couple months at a time between race meetings without any issues , but this time it has not been used since october last year at Warwick when Humpty drove it .
We had removed the carbs to clean & check them in february for the VW drags and it has been sitting idle with E85 in it since then .

just a week before the drags I find that no.1 piston has had a broken spiral lock which has done quite a bit of damage to the piston . The piston needs to be replaced .
Fortunately I have spare pistons , so I machine a new piston on the milling machine to gain the correct piston height to match the other 3 pistons
I also reface the cylinder head chambers , all of the valves are lapped into the seats to ensure a perfect seal

the pistons are installed onto the conrods , the rings are installed onto the pistons and the pistons are installed into the cylinders

my progress pics jump straight to the engine completed as after installing the heads around midnight Thursday night , then installing the exhaust system , then installing the pushrod tubes & pushrods & rocker gear , I adjusted the tappets around 2am to find that I had coil-bind on the new heads ......
So at 2am I proceed to remove all of the rockers & the dual valve springs with the heads still on the engine , to remove .040" of shim from under the springs . I reassemble the rocker gear & adjust the tappets at 4-30am & all looks good .
I proceed to assemble the rest of the engine back together & get it completed by 7am .
The engine is started , tune set and all sounds great !! fortunately the coffee van arrived at the workshop at 7-45am where Chris Bolton & myself purchased a much needed heart-starter ...... Chris had been at the workshop all night , assembling the WPVW dragster for the drags , Ben Ford was going hard on his supercharged drag bug till he ran out of steam at 2-40am ..... these young blokes just don't have any staminer !! lol

early Saturday morning I am about to load the sports sedan onto the trailer to bring it to WSID for Andrew Makin (guest driver) to drive , when I got the message from Craig that the event had been called off ......

the sports sedan is all ready now for Warwick VW drags where the offer is open for Andrew to make the trip up from Melbourne to drive it

I spoke to Andrew Makin this afternoon and after 2 trips to Sydney from Melbourne to drive as WPVW guest driver at Sydney Dragway for the VWMA VW Drags that were washed out , he cannot get the time off work to make the trip to Warwick unfortunately.

Problem no.2 was the truck that we have been using for the past 2 years to get our cars to the Drag events is no longer available ( due to some arsehole torching it ) .... so whoever was going to drive the WPVW sports sedan as guest driver for WPVW this year at Warwick would have to tow it and travel in convoy with us as part of ' The Team '

So a good mate of mine who has owned a beach buggy since he was in his teens ( approx. 30 years ) , has been at my shop doing a restoration project with his 15 y/o son Jack on the same beach buggy for the past month , has been offered the drive in the WPVW sports sedan and has gladly accepted , very gladly I might ad . Jack is coming to Warwick with his dad to play pit-crew for him and it is the first time for both of them at a VW Drag race meeting .
