cb studs 10mm
and yes yes yes for everything else
i think we have a washer problem.
we are just getting down to the heads know and it looks like a colapsed washer or two.
we will wait and see when we get down to it.
i will try to post up the vid's alittle later also.

don't know of any who do!

did you lap the barrels into the head?

what type/size/brand of head studs?

really shouldn't be a problem till you start running forced induction.

Lets just say that i was trying to get some copper head gaskets quite a while ago and went to a "Vw specialist" who stood there and argued with me that i don't need them if the compression isn't too high. Just lap the barrel into the head and tension to 28 foot pounds.

Needless to say I laughed at him and proceeded to say " I guess that's one way to get repeat business" then walked out and went somewhere else.

Head gaskets in a copper materials DO have a place , and a use in some VW situations,
but are not neccesary unless you need a specified deck height,
or are compenating for some other engine factor.

It should go without saying,
that if you choose to use them they should be located on their OD
to prevent being forced out.

I used them on one of my engines.

On my blown engine I used them as a "sacrificial lamb", and it saved my head a couple of times.
And yes, if my tune up was closer it would be un-neccesary.

Having everyting machined square including nut and washer surfaces,
as well as the case and head surfaces is normal procedure,
and Westi has all these bases covered.

When increasing the tension on head studs,
a thicker washer is a nice addition,
and I believe that is the path that Westi is headed.

Also "there is always time for lubrication".
You MUST use a minimum of oil on threads and nut faces.
I use moly paste or anti-seize.

The biggest cause of head seal failure (excluding machining error)
would have to be lean/poor tune.
The pressure spikes from detonation and/or preignition
far exceed any normal forces that should occur.

In fact any normal boost level (less than 50psi? whats normal?) , in CORRECT TUNE, would not reach the cylinder pressure of those nasty spikes.

Thanks Dave for correcting us.
Guru Butler
Dangerous Muffin man....

My present engine is running 040" copper head gaskets as she has zero deck. End CR is 9.7 :1, but a bit more would be nice, but as a streeter, it'll have to do.

Good luck Westi...14:1 is certainly high, but sounds like you should be able to keep her together.

studs gone,washers gone.
started fresh with new.
pulled it down,to have a look see.
lifters all good
cam all good
bearings for crank all good
when i say all good i mean no unusual wear and tear so to speak.
rod bearings not all good
some one was on the piss when they shouldn't have been.
there was no bearing crush, but there was no problem with them yet, but there would have been in the near future i pressume.
so i am happy that i pulled it down.
all my bit's and pieces should be in buy the end of the week i hope ,so we will most likely be missing a few hours sleep between now and the dyno day.
i am going to stick the heads back on the bench.so i will take some footage show you what i have done.

other than that i have been flat out with customers stuff,
thanks for all the support boy's. still haven't heard a good plate sugestion yet.
