Hi Mick

Not 100% but its on the alloy housing near the vacuum port, my memory is getting dim on that, if you need 100% accurate, call me on 0490 020 338, I'm going back to work on my sons bug and I may not see your response, were driving to Sawtell on Friday in it.

appears that they've given me a TD04 turbo. I think there getting 150kw atw with that turbo. I'd need to get the proper Sti turbo to get 200kw plus. Not that i need it, but its still the wrong turbo. See what i can get from the wrecker otherwise may have to leave as is for now...

Well thats that.

Dyno man has done his work. He is happy with the engine, all is running well, he just had to add a knock sensor to it but otherwise the tuning went well.

As said above it has the wrong turbo. It has a TD04 on it and thats all it can do. It dyno'd at 150kw atw (200HP). Supposedly Dyno man said it was a scary little thing after taking it for a test drive.

I could spend another $800 and get myself an Sti turbo, and Dyno man informs me that would give the extra 50kw's or so, but really the only purpose of getting more power out of the engine is to say that it can - i doubt i'd actually use the full power anytime soon - 200hp will probably scare me enough. It is good to know that the engine is well within the safe limits which should bring longevity. I'd much rather throw the $800 towards a g-box and bigger brakes.

Hopefully i'll have a dyno sheet to put up soon - still would have been good to see what the bigger turbo would bring, though they may have hurt the box. Annoyed at the wrecker for giving me the wrong turbo - he'd probably sold it to someone before i bought the half cut - o well - maybe its for the best for now!!!

So so far so good - still need to get it weighed and engineered. hopefully rego soon and a bit of fun!

Congrats dude:tu: (other then being ripped on the turbo)...

You'll still scare yourself with 200hp. I still remember my first boost experience in vwrx - felt like endless power. Then on a cold night (14deg inlet temps - is cold for Darwin) I remember loosing traction easier then usual and almost left human skid marks as well..

Really look forward to seeing the car in motion and in person at Warwick:tu:

I think 150 KW at the wheels will be plenty interesting, and you'll get to do more driving and less gearbox pulling!

Hey Mick we got the same turbo...heheh...wanna race? no actually i'm already over the TD04:no: it has an inlet of 41mm...

in my limited knowledge it ok once its spooled up but other times it feels restricted...80mm intake and 70mm throttlebody...still your beetle is going to feel fast no matter what:tu:

Well I think I'm more excited and less worried now!!! If I get to the stage of wanting more power I know its only $800 away. I'm sure it'll be plenty at 200hp!!

Just to give you an idea, My friend has a pretty hot WRX and that runs some ex rally car modified VF30. That made 219kw on all fours with a monster torque curve. Pulls really hard and once in third it gets really scary.
Adam Debiasi had a turbo 1915 that made 230hp 170kw at the wheel and was a 11 second car. It did 11.88 on a 38 degree day at 115mph from memory.
I think you are going to have fun!

ok, i need some advice for those that know more about subbies than i.

MR wrecker ( Dyno man's nemesis) tells me he has a stack of subby (and other) turbos under the counter - his words were 'come have a look and take what you want i don't care' - i tried to get him to look at some model numbers but he wasn't interested. I reckon, why not go get me a free spare turbo considering he duded me of the one i was suppose to get. I'll just leave the TD04 on for now, but am not sure which to pick of the bunch.

Seems like WRX turbos are easy to come buy so assume most of what he has there has come off a WRX. My question is, which one do i get? Did subby upgrade from the TD04 with something better? If so, are the flanges the same bolt pattern? Are dimensions flange to flange the same? i ask because then it means its a bolt in job. Any feedback from those in the know would be appreciated. Worst case ill just get another TD04 if he has one sitting there - as a spare.

I'd have to get lucky for him to have a VF30 sitting around. I assume he'd have standard WRX turbos sitting around. What came with them? I read that they used to be TD05 and then they changed to TD04 because it spooled up earlier and gave better bottom end.

vf's are a good place to start.if its free. sweet,22 23 24 .30 what ever is better than the shit you got.
but if it's gona cost you maybe look at new.
custom turbo that fit's into the factory ish housing,s would be best, that way it is a direct bolt on.you woundn't want any more 220-250kw atw anyway.i saw the dyno sheet just before i left today, the turbo ain't real good at all mikey, drops of boost.
not to worry though it will be more than enough to get you in and out of trouble.
i hope you took it for a spin.

a normal cars Hydraulic clutch should be light, short travels is ok so you don't ride the clutch
or did you use some fancy race pressure plate??
ps yes they are heaps or scary fun to drive , you shouldn't need any extra power.
Josh and I just have a kennedy pressure plate and a stock beetle clutch plate and cable, my wife has no trouble driving ours as the pedal is very light.

Don't worry about the boost curve Mick.

Worry about if it stays cool, do u have any air locks, are the inlet temps safe, see if u can get it engineered & registered, weighbridge ticket, db reading, are the brakes ok, brake bias etc.

The power will always be there now & for later. just get used to what u have. U don't want to be one of these projects where the car is either on the dyno or in the garage being pulled apart. Theres enough of those cars in the vw scene

enjoy it & be safe

Cheers Jak,

Dyno man said all temps, intakes etc were good. From what i hear it worked pretty hard on the dyno and that was a good test for all components concerned.

Jak, you need to get one of the data scan things (its earlier in the post) - there so good, tells you everything you need to know. YOu set your min and max temps or range etc and its real time monitoring.

From the little drive i took it on, i was very very happy. I only rolled on the accelerator and it never hit full throttle. i've lost all patience now and just wanna get the car back ASAP. One little taste and now i can't wait. When boost comes on (which comes in quite early) its good fun.

I only took it on some back roads (all three of them) so i didnt get much of a go - but still, sounded soooooo nice - soooo much quieter. Felt like the nose of the car wanted to hit you in the face when boost kicked in.

Any standard maintenance advice would be appreciated

Very good.

My Microtech dash tells me everything I need to know. Once the car is tuned. Thats it. I only put my car back on the dyno recently for the first time in 4 1/2 years as I wanted to check the health of the engine & I also changed the muffler which made it run leaner, so the mixtures were adjusted to suit.

I was fortunate? enough to finish my conversion in the middle of summer, so if it wasn't going to cool properly it would have been obvious. The other day on the dyno it only took a few runs to adjust the mixtures & the dyno fan wasnt' needed.

The only other things that I can think of is if u put some new platinum plugs in & also a new timing belt, just for peace of mind. I pressume u may have done this when u bought the motor though.

Don't forget the Subaru upper engine cleaner as well, although I'm sure your dyno man suggested this before tuning.

Did u get a print out of the air/fuel ratio's? also ask for your dyno charts to be done in RPM rather then kph, not only will u know your shift points, torque etc, it will also help u set up your rev limiter.

What was the ft pounds of torque at the wheels?

regards
Jak

PS if u really want to change the turbo for pennies, The TD05 that I have is pretty hard to beat. on wastegate pressure alone it pulls 4psi @ 2500rpm , 7psi @ 3000rpm then straight lines it to 8psi @ 7000rpm without dropping off. There is no boost curve, it's a line.
