Now if only I could get the oil leaks to stop and a little squeak fixed, the engine would be complete and perfect...

Still waiting on word on when the brakes and wheels will need to be organized to get from Darwin to Adelaide, that'll then help me out with the stance and wheel choice for Zelda. From there comes saving the money for the paint job.

Will be heading down to Mum's cousins husbands shop at a later date to have a go at the roof. He's a hot rodder by trade and has many beautiful old Holden's under his belt so I'm hoping he can give me a hand with the roof and pointing me in the right direction when it comes to a painter here in Adelaide. We'll see what happens, now to just organize the oil leak fix and figure out what this damn squeak is!

Stick the Wheels and Brakes on The Ghan. Darwin to Adelaide 2 times a week.

Hmm, how would one organise such a thing?
I'll probably just get it couriered from Darwin to Adelaide, might cost quite a bit but those wheels and brakes will definitely be worth it.

Fitment is going to be insane I reckon, and while I'm at it I'll try my hand at lowering Zelda a little bit more at the rear.
We will see what happens I guess. Time to tighten all the nuts and just drive her around for a while and enjoy her.

Followed someone in a Volkswagen S this morning down Payneham Road and then down North Terrace a little bit.
Number plate started with ROB. Was a nice looking bug, but could only think of cutting the roof off of it and putting it on Zelda...

Thanks Smiley!
Yeah, my next bug will definitely be a baja one, then I'll get a sand sealed one, but for normal road driving, it's great.
No belt slippage when I put my foot down anymore.

Oh, the S bug I followed into town this morning, well, he followed me back home tonight.
Was cool, gave him a wave as he turned off Payneham road. :)

Next up, fix the oil leaks!

Ring great southern rail. They are who owns the ghan. Wouldn't hurt to ask. They used to be one of our clients and I can honestly say the parts would very very safe in the luggage store. T54

Thanks man, will have to check it out as soon as I hear from Reub about weight and dimensions, then I have to organise pick up and everything like that.
Can't wait to get everything to my door. Then, should be a weekend job if all goes to plan to fit everything. Need to order some new front struts, might go for Topline MaXX one's instead of V-Force ones as they're quite pricey at the moment and I just don't have that cash when I'm trying to save for a house.

Going to get into contact with someone I know that will be able to lend me a hand when it comes to the oil leak.
Might give him a buzz tomorrow to see what we can come up with.

Find out today basically everything that is wrong with Zelda and will then be able to go through it all and fix it.
There's one thing that I haven't mentioned, but the window winder thing that attaches to the actual glass has rusted through and fallen off the glass on the drivers side.

Stinking hot day today and I'm gonna have to drive for about an hour without the window open on my side.
Blergh.

But, all for a good cause that is for sure! Will report back with all the findings later tonight.

Very common problem with the glass regulator bracket, seb. The other side is probably no better.
Very hard to find one secondhand that is any good and I don't think you can buy them new.
One option is to have a section bent up and weld the bracket off your old one to the bottom.
I need a pair for my beetle and will probably do some extra's. Let me know if you are interested.

Hey Phil!
I have to take the door card off of both in the near future to check them out, but probably won't be until next weekend unless I can do something at work.
Got a long week ahead so as long as I can get to and from work I am happy. But it is definitely going to be a hot week this week and working in the corporate world where jeans and a shirt is needed, it's going to get very hot inside!
Once I get the door cards off and figure out exactly what the problem is (my current thinking is a guess, but I'm pretty sure I'm right), then I'll be able to determine my next steps, and I am thinking I'll probably need something either made or sourced, but like you said, it is difficult to find good second hand parts these days!

Today, have basically started the build on what could very well be Zelda's third engine. This is what is going to happen.

1. Currently in the process of putting together a "rebuilt" engine from good second hand parts.
2. Once the long block is complete (valve cover to valve cover), remove Zelda's current engine.
3. Strip down current engine and determine issue. If not worth fixing see 4. If worth fixing, see 5.
4. Put all the current parts I have on the second engine on to the third long block and get it in Zelda. Drive it!
5. Fix the current engine and then put it all back together, then just drive it!

When it comes to 70s bugs there isn't much you can't buy new, you just have to buy from the bigger overseas companies.

Joel,
I'm pretty sure they're the exact things I'm after.

Now, if I remember right, there is supposed to be a rubber seal that holds the window into the regulator, whereas, mine was actually siliconed in.
Not good. Will hopefully get new windows and window seals too.
Will see what I can get.

This made me laugh. My first VW (a 62 bug) used to be really gutless and would only do 80km/h flat out when I first got it. After a couple of weeks I decided to give her a tune up and noticed a plug wire had melted to the heat riser for the carby. Pulled plug lead free and hey-presto she now did 110km/h. Was well pleased at the time.

cheers

Aha yeah, there are quite a few funny things in here if you read it all the way through...
Quite a few dodgy things happened too at one stage but oh well.

Waiting for an email from Topline about some MaXX struts that I'm going to need very soon.
Also waiting on a PM telling me that everything is off and ready to get shipped to mine from Reuben and then we're going to get some great looking fitment on Zelda.

Hopefully this weekend we'll see what happens with the engine department.
Getting excited that the engine, brakes, wheels and suspension is all coming together and it is going to be awesome.
We'll see what happens.

Has been a while hasn't it?
Have been busy the past week doing sixteen/seventeen hour days, sleeping at the office and just overall exhausting myself.
Today saw more progress on the third engine that is looking more and more likely to go into Zelda next weekend. Also have ordered Topline MaXX Struts for the front of the car and am about to make an order from CIP1 but don't think $30AUD of parts is worth an order from CIP1.
Might have to think of something else to buy while I'm at it. We'll see what happens.

Quite possibly reshelling Zelda at some point too.
There are two people, one who is on here but I won't name, well, they are the most genuine people I've ever met. Not only are they willing to help, but they're the most genuine people I've met so far in the VW community here in Adelaide.

Topline order is being sent today (today being America's Monday) so that is cool.
Should be here before the end of the week all going well, if not, next Monday.

Next weekend will hopefully see engine three go into Zelda and see how that goes.
Hopefully by then I also have a clear direction I want to take Zelda, and it's looking more and more like a Germanlook bug.
Just a matter of getting everything ready and sourcing parts.

Craig,
I agree with you completely, but I might have got my hands on a new 1303 shell.
Just a matter of time now. I'd prefer to get the drive train and suspension done before moving onto the body work. To me, mechanically A1 and rolling on nice suspension with a little bit of lows is worth more than getting the body perfect and painted.

I guess it is each to their own, but trust me, I've spent a lot on Zelda and seeing her looking like the way she does, makes me feel like shit inside.
But when everything is done and she is looking the works, it'll be worth the pain and hours that are still yet to go into her.

I'm happy to report that Zelda did a 300km round trip yesterday from mine to Mintaro, Clare Valley.
She stuck to 100km/h the whole time and I did get a little faster down hill which was a little scary, but she definitely held herself around corners going quite fast, which to any teenager who's just played racing games his whole life, well, it just felt amazing!

I digress. She's leaking oil like no tomorrow now after I topped her up before taking on the trip yesterday.
Oh well, what can you expect, she is old and the engine is old too.

Excited to receive the next package in the post that is for sure!
