I know that some Porsche's and probably other factory cars use aluminium-alloy hubs and iron rotors,
so should be OK if design-engineered correctly.

No, we didn't, one of them amazingly had his engineered with drum brakes on the rear:crazy:

Unless u are going to do track work, there is no need to upgrade the front brakes.

In a light car like Micks, I think that it will be easy to "over brake" the car.
I think some engineers just cover all conversions with the same blanket of rules, rather than treating them on an individual basis.
VW components are seriously over engineered & are up to the task, non vw people wouldnt' know that.

I still don't get why, for a road Beetle with a hot engine, it won't be OK with say T3 drums on the rear and some form of disc brake up front that is similar in diameter to the original VW discs, 279mm? I know there is more weight in the back but under braking the weight is transferred forward so could someone explain eactly why discs are required on the rear.
From an engineers point of view wouldn't they just see a modified version of the original VW setup? Front discs and rear drums.
Coming from the UK the majority of Bugs with hot engines still use the std VW kit without any problems. Maybe some slotted/ drilled discs and sport pads in there but otherwise std setup and they pull up just fine.
Cheers :)

rear drums are ok
I think most V8 from the early days had drums all-round.
I also think a Dodge viper has rear drums .
On my super all the brakes where replaced with new ones.
disc, calipers, drums , shoes, wheel cylinders, pipes, hoses, Master cylinder. etc etc.

Yep I reckon it could be easy to over-brake one of these cars. I put Subaru vented disks and standard twin pot calipers onto my WRMANX project today and compared them to the original VW discs. Same size disc (except vented on the Subie one) and caliper is twin pot. Now that's for a car that probably weighs a good 500kg more than a beetle. I would have thought std VW disks up front and T3 drums on the back to be more than adequate.

i think there is a general rule that the brakes need to be to 'donor car specs': ie: vented, as that is what the Subies have. Not 100%. Engineer wanted a front brake upgrade so were doing it.

He hadn't mentioned it earlier which is a bit of a pain, but anyways, thats the way these things go.

Thing that I find interesting is that they don't seem to take the weight factor into account, or do they?
a Subie weighs 400-500kg more than a bug. With the bigger engine your bug is maybe 300-400kg lighter than a subie so std bug discs up front and rear drums in good working order should still haul things in nicely. All these brake mods required for an engineers report means you now have a car thats 0-100-0 times and distances are far superior to the donor vehicle.
I just think it's amusing, well and maybe a little frustrating due to the extra effort required to meet the engineers wishes :)

well looks like i wont make Warrick :(

The car might be ready but i can't get my hands on a trailer. I've tied in work (as i do lots in Brisbane) and some time off with my wife @ Broadbeach with the Warrick show - means i'm up there for 2weeks and need to hire a car trailer for 2 weeks. I can't afford $500 to hire a trailer right at the moment and can't justify spending $500 more on the car right now, so i won't be making it with the car - which blows!!!!

ill still come to spectate but it isn't the same without your car, plus it seems harder to 'talk' to people without your car there. Suxs cause it sounds like a bit of a special year at Warwick this year with so many new entries.

Guess there's next year...
