the problem is once again will be put down to human error.
shall i say end float problem.yes.
there will be a head hung low tommorrow.2 heads actually.
the one that set it and the one that said tonight,na man i watched him do it 100 times it's set right.
maybe 101 would have been the magic number.

who can redowell the block as it has pushed the little bearing dowell alittle.i might be able to use a longer dowell as it is only slightly of,but i would prefer a new dowell hole.
crank looks good.it has just ever so lightly pick'd up the bearing.
any how of to bed for me.hopefully back together soon.
cya.

You can use an old centre main bearing as a jig to re drill a new dowel hole.
Make sure oil holes still align if you change the index.

I have drilled the hole over-size and made a small stepped dowel,
making sure there is none of the fat part sticking out of the hole.

Keep end float near or above top clearance with alum case....0.006".

I have used as much as .010" with stock shim system with no problems.
It can effect the dizzy drive movement though.

Current flanged crank was set .009" from new on purpose, but mainly due to the large diameters of journal and flange.

You should be fine with .006".

yeh sounds tuff,
there are a few little things still left to sort out,one little oil leak.and brakes need alittle work.

i have a tech question though.were on the dipstick can you run the oil level so that there is minimal crank slap in the oil.
we noticed that the oil is airated quite a bit.so having a deep sump i thought i might be able to run the oil alittle lower.
what's your thoughts.

interesting Westi..............i guess your's could cope better with the rocker drains as there shouldn't be so much gathering in there.........is it worth the risk of loosing oil pressure at the top end of the track tho, plenty of guys have done that before:no:

Depends on how big your extended sump is. A lot of the turbo guys run a lower oil level to allow better drainage with their low mount turbo setups. I ran the oil level at the bottom of the dipstick with my 2332 turbo, and it had a 32mm oil pump so it really moved the oil around. I never lost oil pressure, though I wasnt reving past 6500 either (turbo too small). With the wide empi sump and full to the stock mark it was something crazy like 5.5lt capacity but my memories of this are from 2 years ago...

I used to run about 1/4" down the stick, with a Berg 4 qt sump, turning up to 9000 rpm, std drains, and never an oil surge/loss, only drag racing.

yeh always.
as for the sump the engine holds about 7 ltr's of oil so i would guess that by taking it a 1/4 of he way down the dipstick would only be around 1/2 ltr less oil,is this about right.
thanks for the inpt so far,
what oil is everyone using.
i use 20 -50w castrol gtx2,i was thinkng of changing to something alittle thiner.might pick up a few more pony's.every little bit counts.

I used to the Castrol product for many years no problem,(25W50 and 15W40)
but recently changed over to the ACE QPL 40.

I amvery happy with the outcome.

Plus the chemist who designed it is a Volksy dude,
so it is good to keep it in the family.

My total volume is 5.5 litres, and the crank probably splashes around in the oil at first,
but it quickly ends up in the valve covers.
I have restricted the pushrods to limit this.

My old VW cased engine had the oil level at the lower dip stick mark, and that was 5 litres.
This was mainly to stop the breather filling up due to the splash.
But at that time I never had a light that would tell me if the pressure was actually dropping at any point,
except for the stock light....in which time it was "all over".

As long as your oil pump is no bigger than say, 30mm,(mine is 26mm)
or your oil clearance is not excessive,
you should be able to run around 5.5 litres without starvation,
but be able to keep the crank out of the waves.

Stan's little 300ml extension is a great way to keep the pick-up fed,
but if you empty that out you may be cryng.

Perhaps a combination of a small deep sump,
plus something like stan's,
would be a good combination.

Formula Vee fellows dreamt that Idea up in the 60's with a little tin cup,
but having billet aluminium is a bit more sturdy in case you bottom out.
