Vees now run a finned alloy sump extension to stop oil surge. Also extend the pick up down into the extension as Dave mentioned.
We are running Penrite mineral based oil in Troy's type 3. Once it has some K's on it we'll prolly switch to a semi synthetic.

question though.were on the dipstick can you run the oil level so that there is minimal crank slap in the oil.
we noticed that the oil is airated quite a bit.so having a deep sump i thought i might be able to run the oil alittle lower.
what's your thoughts.
|
old mans says, first thing to work out is why your getting airation in your oil.. that shouldnt be happening. cause that causes cavitation in your oil
pump and oil surge issues.

cavitation and airation are to different things. Airation gives you an oil smoothy and ultimately poor lubrication where as cavitation is a result of
say having too small a pump inlet or blocked filter. This results in bubbles which implode and can actually start pulling metal out of the suction
side of your inlet.

Can cavitation occur from the 'smoothy' effect though? If smoothy is aerated oil, then air within a pump will cause cavitation. I guess it depends
on how well the pump is being fed by the aerated water - gurgling etc...

No....cavitation is caused by negative pressure (sucking).Aeration and cavitation will both ultimately end in failure, however aeration will have an
affect almost immediately whereas cavitation takes some time to show up. The warning signs for each are slightly different. Aeration will show the
usual signs of lack of lubrication (blueing/galling) where cavitation shows up as contamination damage due to metal contamination from the erosion of
the pump at the inlet.
Aeration also shows up immediately with the "smoothy effect" whereas cavitation usually won't unless it's an extreme case.
I have seen cavitation so bad that it erodes hydraulic pumps to the point the inlet fittings fall out. Usually caused by dirty inlet filters or
inadequate suction line size.

im just talking from a pump point of view, i haven't got the engine knowledge you lads have. I know that valving and blockages can cause cavitation,
inadequate suction lines but also air (depending on the other mentioned causes). A simple air bubble between an impeller and a one way valve can cause
cavitation and loss of prime - sorry, probably not quite related anyways

yeah too true, but the aeration in the oil will be a large contributing factor, that will in term cause suction problems, and lead to cavitation..
which will destroy your engine. he's been working with performance and industrial engine for a good 30 years and has seen this many times.. most
ending badly
the point im trying to make/the question im asking is why is your oil aerating..?? thats bad

well it was yet another long night as per usual.
worth it you will agree, well maybe.
did some minor jet changes to get us started after the last dyno run.
with were alittle fat down low and lean up top,
but we cracked 172 atw i was devistated, then we realized that it was still set in kilo watts.wooofuckin hoo.
230.1 rwhp.holy crap batman.stone cold engine and oil temps the heads were only just reading on the gauge.
then we spent the rest of the night trying to get it leaner down low and fatter up top.
all the changes resulted in power drops,so we went back to my first setting on a warmish engine which is 215.3 hp,
i think we might be at the end of the fuels capabilities after all it is only 100 octane.
but after all that it might be the limits of the carbies/venturies,we are stumped and over the moon all at the same time.
i will post up the dyno sheets tomorrow.as we are pretty tierd and need some sleep if we are going to take her out to the track tommorrow night.
we will have to do some checks before i am confident enough to tackle the track.i think i am going to have to take a few pairs of undies out with
me.me thinks i might soil a few.
down sharon.
