Sorry no pics or new vid just yet, just the crappy phone one I posted the other day. I ended up having to work the whole day today, so I didnt have time to get stuck into the car again. Im going to try and borrow Wibble's DV camera equipment for the weekend, so I can make a decent video.

Had a fairly full day with work today but managed to get the time to give the bug a clean, and put 2/3's of the back of the car on again. Im actually kind of stunned how it looks! I think ive definatly been able to keep within the original design concept of having a car that is un-mistakeably VW, yet engineered completely beyond insanity.

The rear valence went on no problems. Just had to move two oil lines around on their fittings a tiny bit and there is plenty of space and no rubbing at all.

Ive got to finish the plan for the exhaust now. It will either be a 3" outlet straight backwards under the valence/guard seams, or a bent downward dump behind each rear wheel, so the pipe will be barely visible from the back of the car. The second idea will allow wheelie bars to easily clear the exhaust too so its probably the smarter way to go.

Here are the photo's.

Great stuff Ian!

Re the dump pipes......don't point them to the ground, being a black and ultra detailed car you'll never forgive yourself........all they will do is stir up dust, dust ,DUST .......everywhere you go, local car parks, show arenas, return roads at the drags blah blah......endless detailing every time you drive it

Seen plenty of hot rods with down pipes turn up here for the week long show and they certainly don't look the same a few days later

yes for the vids, can't wait!

Thanks again for the comments guys. Looks like I dont have a lot of options with the exhaust due to the shape of the aero guards. Im going to have to have the pipes exhaust on about a 20-30 degree downward angle ad the edge of the guards, each side. Hopefully that wont stir up the dust too much.

From memory the aero guards are 1.5" wider than stock. I added another 90mm through the inside of them. The wheel track was increased 100mm each side which made the suspension specs the same as a 1988 944 turbo, which was the same car all the suspension parts were sourced from. The front track is 40mm wider than the back.

Hopefully getting some time to work on the exhaust today...

Cheers,
Ian

The exhaust is for the most part finished now. I opted for a very straight through setup, but still angled down a bit. I can always put a 45 degree angle on the end to take the pipes straight back if I have too much trouble with dust.

I still need to take off the left side dump pipe and weld on a bung for the wideband exhaust gas sensor, which I will do tomorrow. I also intend to get the whole system garnet blasted, so that I can ceramic coat the dump pipes and mufflers. The tips are stainless so I could polish those, or just coat the whole lot with the black turbox ceramic coating.
Im still undecided.

The right side fender is on as well now, so I could match up the pipe clearences etc.
http://users.on.net/~iswinkels/Hosted/Exhaust/DSCF0098.JPG

Left side... pretty simple, and cant get much more "straight through" than that. I dont think it will be muffling too much, but im really not too concerned about the noise it will make, or the legality. If I get defected I'll just put a silencer in the left side exhaust. As I understand it, a vw has to pass 95db at 2400 rpm.
http://users.on.net/~iswinkels/Hosted/Exhaust/DSCF0099.JPG

Right side, and you can see that in between the muffler and dump pipe that there is a pnumatically operated 3" exhaust valve. This is part of the sequential turbo control setup. I should also have a wastegate installed here (turbosmart 38mm will do nicely) to operate over this valve to facilitate pre-spool and reduce lag. Its on the list of things that I still need to buy.
http://users.on.net/~iswinkels/Hosted/Exhaust/DSCF0100.JPG

The exhaust measures about 95mm to the ground in this position at its lowerst point, with the suspension slammed as low as it goes in the back. After I measure the corner weights and choose a set of new springs this will be raised to a legal 120-130mm.
http://users.on.net/~iswinkels/Hosted/Exhaust/DSCF0101.JPG

I will be starting the car agian tomorrow to work on the idle and low end tune a little. I am pretty sure that I have two injectors firing out of sequence, as the idle is rough and it only runs smooth once the engine speed is above 2000 rpm. If I can source a video camera from someone tomorrow i'll take some new footage where you can actually see the engine properly!

Cheers,
Ian

Looking good Ian. Don't think those muffs are going to contain any noise:)
Cut the tips so that they are parallel to the ground. They stick out too much IMO.
Are you going to paint under the guards?
Looking forward to another vid.

Hi

Looking good, I think you will have a dust problem with the exhaust pointing down like that and the sheer volume that will come out.

I welded the sensor bung into the dump pipe today and started the car again. This time I was able to sort out the idle AFR's and that fixed the rough idle it had before. Seems I was running it near 10:1 when doing the camshaft break in.

The exhaust is a lot quieter than I expected, those hot dogs do work a little! I dont know about legal, but it sounds pretty good. Ive taken another short video of it running again, this time with better light.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsrLGDmFeko

The guys making my custom accelerator cable took all week to not have it ready, so driving it is still a little way off experiencing that. Also we are getting a huge amount of rain at the moment, and the last thing I want to be doing is cruising around in the car when its pooring rain.

I will be taking the exhaust off tomorrow and getting it all garnet blasted so I can cermaic coat it next week. Ive got to tidy up a bit of wiring and install tail lights as well so that will keep me occupied in the meantime

Yes the guards will be being painted black inside. They have to come off the car again so I can get them re-sprayed, so it will happen then. They look good in the photo's but there are a few flaws that need fixing that will require rubbing them back again. I wouldnt have bothered with it but the rest of the car looks so good, I have to bring the guards up to that same level as well.

Yes dust might be an issue, but as with any forced induction car (that doesnt run a cat) I am expecting it will need to be cleaned pretty often. I used to own a white R33 gtr that had no car, and despite the exhaust exiting beyond the bumper the whole back of the car was frequently covered in soot from the 12:1 on boost AFR's.

Cheers,
Ian

Troy's type 3 has no mufflers at all. 380mm of pipe from turbo housing to tailpipe.

Loud = yes but still not as loud as 99.99% of Harley's on the road.

Wibble Dude! I think I should just buy one of your video camera's off you! I'll be in touch.

Thanks for the comments again guys. The dump pipes and exhaust are currently off the car again and in being garnet blasted prior to being ceramic coated. I should have them back on the car again by the weekend, and with any luck will have an accelerator cable then too. So... if its not raining all weekend again I might actually get to go for a test drive and do a little street tuning! Woo Hoo!

On another note, I started another engine today too. Its very off topic, but as you all know im a little into Nisan GTR's as well. This is a prototype engine of my own design (3.1lt), that was started for the first time today. The sleeves, spacer plate, crankshaft and pistons are all my own design.

Hi Guys,

Ive got the dump pipes and mufflers ceramic coated and back on the car again now.

http://users.on.net/~iswinkels/Hosted/Exhaust/DSCF0117.JPG

http://users.on.net/~iswinkels/Hosted/Exhaust/DSCF0118.JPG

I also have the intercooler and most of the piping intercooler installed but have had to order a few more parts to finalise the intakes/filtering setup. Most of these parts arrived today... that is all but the stuff I really needed.

Still havent driven the car yet. I want to put the air cleaners on it before I go for a drive. It has finally stopped raining though.

Cheers,

Ian
