Yeah I know..... No disrespect to you guys and racecars that actually look like racecars, but the idea behind the POS is that it still has to look
like a street car.... Just because I like the challenge don't you know..... The hat is still an option, but I need to do some research on complex
mold making..... I'm also starting to think the 'ESSEX FUNNEL OF FUN' is looking like a possible road to induction love! The car already creates a stir at the track, but that
would really upset the established local racers!

Jeez Simon....get another deck lid and cut. Do you think the V8 guys with holes in their bonnets worry about street car looks. When you smoke a V8
they just think of at as being beaten by a beetle not a ''street beetle''

Yeah I know Barry.... Morgs and Ben have been on me about cutting up the car for ages.... I just find it real hard to do stuff like that.... The look
is very important to me.... For instance... I really don't like those massive aluminium engine boxes that some peeps have on their cars... I
understand the reasons they do it, but they still look shite!... Just like propping the engine cover further out.... It just looks stupid in my
eyes.... Guess that's why I end up doing things differently or the had way if you like....
But that velocity stack hanging out the back would look kinda mad!!!!

I had attempted to fit an aircleaner much like that before Dave, but there just isn't enough room.... As this is actually a track car only these days
and will never see the street again, I can get away with a stack all the time I guess.... Fortunately the motorplex is a very clean enviroment so the
chance of getting crap into the intake is limited, though possible.... Though all the stacks I have found will not clear the OEM air intake, so that
area will need to be 'clearanced' to make it fit.... Not really an option for me.... I think I'll be fabricating something a little different for
this one..... Just like everything else on the car!
If the weather holds, I'll hit the track again tomorrow night, then tackle this problem.... We shall see which way the wind blows....

I'm with you here Simon. I like my Beetles to look like Beetles. That's why I was reluctant to stick my wing on. But each to their own. At the end
of the day the more volksies racing the better for all.
Now enough talk and get this shit sorted

I'm racing tomorrow night if the weather clears.... Not looking good at the moment though.
None of those aircleaners will fit Ian.... I have tried the same one that you have, and the one on the FOOSE bug is actually about the same height and
diameter... It has short flange stack on the underside to clear the adjust-a-jet screw..... Thinking a velocity stack is gonna be the easiest
option... Prolly by one tonight.

Ok..... I think I have the intake figured out.... I'm gonna cut shit up and fit a 10" tall velocity stack!!!!.... That'll upset the V8 fellas for
sure!!!!.... And improve the flow of the intake charge slightly too...
So all good there....
And now I find I'm looking for things to do.... Something that has bugged me for years has finally been fixed.... The POS had a very small oil
leak.... It's has never been a leaker this engine, but there has always been a very minor weep of oil coming from one of the 6mm sump plate studs....
It's never dropped oil, but it's always kinda bothered me...
Those of you that might remember the Bug that I built in Sydney (while hanging out at Hellbug) back in the early 90's, might also be aware that I use
to use the car in Classic Rallies, Hillclimbs and Sprints....The engine and transaxle from that car, is the same gear that's in the POS.... So you
can see this stuff has taken a hammering over the years.... But I digress...
The oil weep issue first surfaced after a very hard landing in an event I was competing in. I hit a massive, unmarked pothole on a transit stage in
the Classic Rally back in 96... The aftermath of this landing was very nearly catastrophic... The car came down pretty nicely, after hitting a rail
crossing at about 140kmh... Unfortunately right after the landing, there in front of us was the aforementioned pothole.... What happened next could
have done a lot of damage, but we were very lucky.... The BERG sump hit the ground very hard, which pushed the engine up into the car, which popped
off both rocker covers and broke the nose cone of the transaxle.... Needless to say I stopped the car and engine as soon as the car pulled to a very
fast stop!
The story has plenty more in it, of which I might chat about later, but the reason for this leak and for me to finally, after 16 years, repair it, is
now clear....
I took out the BERG supplied 6mm studs, cleaned and retapped the threads, fitted 40mm long cap screws (from the inside of the sump) with copper washes
and some loctite into the thread sump flange, and proceeded to refit the very bashed up, but surprisingly straight OEM VW sumplate.... I used copper
washes and nylock nuts this time too.... Hope they don't leak!
All it right in the world.

At the last minute, my brother decided to go to the track.... Fortunately I was about to leave the school Christmas doo.... This gave me a very
convenient out..... Got to the track late, took ages to get through to scrutineering, though the actual scrutineering didn't take long.... The guys
know the car!...... So out on the track I go..... Got three runs in all night, which sucked, but the times were pretty consistent....
13.980 at 101.80mph with very lazy 2.061sec 60'...
13.994 at 101.69mph with very lazy 2.062sec 60'...
And I can't find the last run, but it was another 13.9.....
Massive rev limiter action in three gears..... Car is still a little lean on boost, and the intake charge is way too cold, but all in all, I'm very
happy to have cracked 13's on my first 'good' runs.
Far from perfect, but a 2 second improvement from the last attempt is a good thing.
