WPVW RACE REPORT

well after 3 months of preparation , including the intense last 3 weeks of 7 days a week 16 to 17 hours a day , all of the WPVW cars went really well .

many thanks must go to the members of team WPVW for all their effort and assistance in preparing 5 cars for this event . A special thanks must go to my father Allan ( poppy Penrose ) for his immense support and for all the assistance in machining engine parts for me . Without the support of my team these cars would not have made it to Warwick

My turbo oval ran 6.33@113mph , Chris Bolton in his new turbo bug ran 6.71@101mph , Ben Ford in his supercharged bug ran a new PB of 7.04@100.3mph , Joe Tanti in the WPVW sports sedan ran 8.5@82mph and Cindy Hurst raced my turbo cabriolet as her turbo beetle did not get finished for this event . Cindy ran a 10.5@65mph

I managed to hire a car transporter for all 5 of our cars which really took the stress away of towing all 5 vehicles to QLD and back . I then hired a 25 seater mini bus which was just awesome as team members that had been up working all of those late nights were able to get some well deserved sleep on the trip up there

Many thanks goes to Craig and his wife Colleen for putting on the event once again , many thanks go to the track organisers and members of the Warwick Drag Racing Club for all their efforts , and many thanks go to all competitors and spectators because without you , we just dont have an event

a now just for a tease , I am laying on a beach outside the Sofitel on Denaru Island , Fiji where I have bought my daughter Brittany for her first overseas trip . I am laying on the beach planning VWMA drags at WSID in february 2012 , see you all there . Wayne

PS will put pics up of Warwick when we get back

video of the WPVW turbo oval at Warwick 2011

a compilation of vids of my turbo oval running at Warwick 2011 VW drags . After setting fastest ET and MPH for the event of 6.33@113mph , out of respect for other racers I packed the oval away as oil was leaking from no-2 inlet pushrod tube onto the exhaust and I didn't want to put oil down on the track .....

well I didn't get to run my oval at WSID for the Rocket retro drags , even though I was entered .
I pulled the engine out on the wednesday night , replaced the clutch assembly as I was having clutch slip issues at Warwick , refitted the engine and got to the dyno on thursday morning .
I put the oval on the dyno , raised the static fuel pressure from 55psi to 87psi , re-adjusted the tune and all sounded good until I got greedy and raised the boost from 18psi to 25psi . The engine sounded awesome and strong but the clutch just didnt want to play .
At just over 400rwhp the clutch slipped repeatedly . At first we though it was turning the tyres on the rollers , but no visible smoke from the tyres .
I brought the oval back to WPVW and a short test drive confirmed that the clutch was not happy , so back out it will come soon . Will keep you posted on progress .

well after a great result at Warwick , I decided to pull the engine on the WPVW turbo oval to rectify a clutch slip issue which started to develope at Warwick .
I removed the engine to inspect the clutch and found much more than I had expected ......

the clutch had been slipping a little at Warwick , so I decided to replace the pressure plate prior to the dyno session . I replaced the stage 3 Kennedy pressure plate with a stage 4 3000lb plate . What I didnt realise was that the stage 3 pressure plate had badly distorted on the pressure plate shoe and it had worn the clutch plate tapered on the pressure plate side .
So when I installed the new pressure plate , only 18mm of surface area was contacting the pressure plate shoe , which is 38mm wide . I measured the thickness of the clutch plate and it was .5mm thicker on the inside than it was on the outside . This lack of surface contact caused the clutch to slip each time the oval tried to produce more than 400rwhp .

in preparation for WSID VW Showdown , I have removed the transmission and stripped it down for inspection . Great news !! I really cant find anything wrong , all bearings look great , so I reassemble the transmission with the only change being 3rd & 4th gear ratios .
I have now geared the oval to do 152mph & 8000rpm in 4th gear .

I have also discoved that the turbo has inhaled some debris which has damaged the compressor wheel . The T60-1 Garrett turbo is repairable , but I have decided that this is the best time to upsize .....
On the left is the old T60-1 turbo ( 1.00 exh & 60mm compressor wheel ) and on the right is the new T04Z roller bearing turbo for the oval ( 1.15 exh & 66mm compressor wheel )

I have also purchased a set of Bosch ID2000 injectors for the oval , to increase fuel flow to each cylinder under high boost .
The previous 1680cc injectors went onto max duty cycle at just 18psi boost with 55lbs fuel pressure . The new injectors will supply 2000cc of fuel at 55lbs , 2250cc of fuel at 65lbs and 2500cc of fuel at 75lbs etc
I am also manufacturing new fuel rails with -10 fittings . An 8mm bolt sits beside the rails to give you an idea of the size of the fittings

A stage 4 and black magic should be enough for 1000hp....well, perhaps not that much.
I am not a fan of those heavy discs, but once warm,
they have more holding power than any other material.

Make sure the extra thickness is not
causing the diafragm to go over centre.
When bolted down, the fingers should not be lower than level.
I have not seen one yet that did not need to be shimmed out from the FW.

Look forward to catching up again with you and your crew Wayne, in Sydney!

my cars dont go to the track unless they have been on the dyno and set up correctly first .....there is way too much at stake with an engine like this .
It has taken me over 25 years in the VW trade to progress to the stage that I am at now with my turbo type-4 engine and I would like to keep climbing the ladder of success slowly , and what I mean by success is , self satisfaction that I have achieved the highest level of performance with the equipment that I am using / developing .
Dyno session might be on saturday if I am satisfied that everything is ready to go .... if not it might be Monday afternoon . The plan is to raise the boost from 18psi to 28psi which should show figures in excess of 550rwhp .

Not trying to disagree with anyone but on my turbo car I ran a 2700 lb pressure plate with a Black Majic disc, was good until I crossed over the 425 hp mark, then slipped in 3rd gear . High rotating mass is tough on synchros , with the double Kennady setup I am running now it is virtually impossible to speed shift it. I ran the Tilton setup previously and with those thin discs it shifts like a stock disc but will NOT slip. I have just ordered the new RLR Rev6 setup and will give some feedback if anyone is interested after I make some passes with it. Mike McCarthy

Still no intercooler or water/NOS injection to cool the intake temperature? What temp do you see at the end of a run? I'm at the same HP level as you and use a Kep stage 2 with a thin (lighter) version of the black magic disc. Cold break away torque was set at 190lbs. It launches soft and easy but has enough grip in all gears, also on the dyno. I use a German flywheel.
