Well some progress - no pics at this stage sorry.

We were able to get the pedals all fixed up - we've used the original pedals but modified the lower section and moved the brake and clutch cylinder on the other side of the fire wall. The clutch feels amazing, not only because of how hard it was with the incorrect travel but of how good it feels compared to the cable clutch. It really is an ease and very comfortable, just like any modern day car - this is a very big :tu: in my eyes.

Brakes are sorted too now - engineer will still need to properly test them and approve them but the pedal felt very good. It felt controllable, wasn't squishy but wasn't too hard - didn't lock or make your head hit the windscreen when applying a little pressure, you can control when you really want the brakes to kick in. I cant remember exactly the master size, i think it was an inch and 1/8 and was a drag master cylinder. Yet to get all info and part numbers once the car is all done and finished.

We also change the rear springs around and applied more tension. I personally think its WAYYYY to stiff in the rear now, i think there is basically no travel! But, first we want to test it all - ill drive it for a couple of weeks and see if i can get the back end to deck out through boost, if not, we'll release some of the spring tension and try that. I don't think ill last too long as is because its way to stiff/no travel. The car sits a little too high at the rear too - we'll see if it settles but i don't think it will at this stage. Anyways, is a little bit of trial and error with it for now.

Slowly building up my g-box parts, once thats ready to go ill send stuff up to DB and start planning the turbo upgrade - by then im sure i would of got used to the 200hp and be ready for a little more :ninja:

All is progressing well and looks like engineering will happen this week and ill finally have my car at home after almost 9mnths! I think Brad is happy to get it out of his workshop for a little too - no doubt it will have a few more visits in the years to come!

ill try to get some pics

Hi Mick,

Good to finally meet you on the week-end. Glad its all coming together for you and I bet you cant wait to have the car sitting in the driveway and go for a spin when you want.

The technical info re the brakes will be good for all VeeDubbers and may make a future job a little easier for some. Its always hard being the first to try something new and can be expensive.

In relation to the gearbox, I gather that Dave has been advising you on what parts to get along the way. What sort of horsepower will the gearbox be able to handle. Also, is it base on a Beetle gearbox or the larger Kombi boxes.

Good luck with the engineer and I will have to ask if you can take me for a spin one day. Hang on, thats how all your work started didn't it. Go for a little drive and you're hooked

Kev

hey Kev, yes, nice to meet you too - shame i didnt have the car there.

Yeh, they have been a few things we've done that others hadn't done the same yet - brake kits for dropped spindles, that's been lots of fun!

Box wise, i think thats too hard to answer re the housepower. Depends how hard you drive it too - but, yes, DB's advice all the way - Rhino case, HD side covers, Quaife, Albin gears and all the extra DB tricks and assembly. I'm hoping to get upto 280-300hp out of the engine without hurting it. Thats what the turbo upgrade should bring. I'd like to spend some time with the 200hp first - time wise, probably have the upgrade in by Warwick next year :D

Congratulations Mick (and Westi), :starhit:

You've reached another milestone, although I guess this isn't the end of the journey.
Look forward to seeing this in the flesh again.

How's the rear suspension going?

Cheers
Craig

hmmm - rear end i think will be too stiff. Brad got to drive to engineers yesterday so his had more of a chance than me! Brad said was great on smooth roads but once it got bumpy it was pretty harsh. i can adjust whats there and give it more travel, so i may do that real soon depending how annoying the 'thud' is, otherwise i might bite the bullet and get some proper adjustable rear coil overs.

Rego should be tomorrow - got all the paper work so should be good!
