Hi Greg

I knew it was coming, new resolution, leave cars in gear

In my line of work I've nearly been run over many times by people leaving cars in gear despite me reminding them to make sure its in neutral before starting the engine, they sometimes get out of the car taking their foot of the clutch with car running but still in gear

that would be scary.

someone moved my car for something ages ago and I started it in gear, as I never leave mine in gear so i didn't thing about checking.

#%%#%# was a few swear word when I got fright of my life. Took off like a rocket as soon as the key turned, never hit the brake and clutch so fast before lol. Now I don't let anyone drive my car and I always check the shifter before I start.

Vlad, you remind me of when I had my first car and it needed a pink slip for rego.
It was an auto and I wasn't aware at the time but you that could start it in gear!
The mechanic asked me to put the car into reverse (car was not running) to check the reverse lights were working.
He then came around to my car door to check mileage and asked a fews other questions etc, then asked me to move the car.
Forgetting that it was still in reverse I started the car, and almost ran him down!!
Never have I had to jump on the brakes so fast.

Suffice to say, the pink slip wasn't forthcoming that day....

Hi

Cars fixed, motor is fixed, just wired in what I could of the Adaptronic 1280 ecu and dropped the car at DVS tuning to finish the wiring and a for a flex fuel E85 tune. Cant wait to see what it makes, 235 kW last time on 98 & 22psi, so with cams and E85 I might be looking at around 300 kW at the wheels.

I took 60 litres of E85 up for the tune, it smells good enough to drink

Steve, I think the fumes must be getting to you, if you think like that and want to drink it :lol::lol:

Does that place know how to tune an aircooled engine (mine) as I'm told that you need to set them up richer than water cooled cars. If this is true.

Looking forward to a passengers seat ride (again) in your car when you have it back :tu:

Hi Kev

He will tune anything, hes very careful when tuning, hes also very busy so it can be hard to get in, he's booked out well into June.

No worries passenger ride soon.

Can you do flex fuel or dual maps on your ECU? Air cooled turbos love E85

yeah a tad richer in certain areas, under load mostly to unsure sufficient charge cooling and detonation protection.

I envy you Steve for being able to get E85.

I have not even seen a single station within 100km radius from my place that I know of that sells E85, otherwise I'd bee running everything on it. it bloody good fuel, puts petroleum based fuels to shame.

Quick update, car made 245 kW on 21 psi on E85, ran out of spark, more details soon. On 98 it made 229 on 22 psi

Thanks, the tuner is doing the cold start this morning, good day for it, pick it up after lunch and then hopefully get it back on the road for a pie tonight, it has no rear guards or bumper on it now

hey Steve, is it breaking down at high revs or something? An extra 16kW for E85 is a bit low I think. Especially with the new cams? how did it go this morning??

Hi Lou

I lost 20 kw with the new cams, all the marks lined up but after degreeing the cams I found that they were 8 degrees advanced, fixed that then it wouldnt take anymore than 21 psi without breaking down, Ive given up for a while and Im just going to drive it for a while how it is, then fit some better coils, most likely LS2.

when you say breaking down do you mean it was pinging and the knock sensor was pulling it back? 21psi is lots of boost which equates to higher compression ratio. Maybe you need a better fuel??

were you getting any fault codes?

Wasnt pinging just breaking down, new ECU Adaptronic 1280 so no fault codes, it was pinging very badly on 98 anything over 21, I was planning to run 24-25 psi. It lost midrange with these cams and adjusting the variable inlet cams made it run worse, it picked up alot of midrange with E85

OK Ive found a small issue in the ignition circuit, my ignition system uses coil on plug, I found a .8 ohm resistance in the earth circuit on one coil, if its not raining tomorrow I will give it a run

I had to to remove my crank pulley to check cam timing etc, made this tool to hold the crank pulley when undoing or tightening and I bought this cam lock tool for left side (or right side on a Beetle) of the motor, because when the timing belt is removed these cam wheels violently spin which can cause the valves to hit each other

Hi

My coil on plugs ignition system was letting me down. Thanks to AFI in Peakhurst I bought some LS2 truck coils along with connectors for a good price, when I get these hooked up I will go back to the dyno for some more boost.

This is an awesome build Steve. Well done. Just wondering how well the small mirrors closer to the door than stock work in practice? I am looking at making some VW Concept 1 mirrors for my Beetle but don't want to go to all the work if the rear view is compromised too much.

Hi

Just had my exhaust coated at Hi Octane coatings in Rydalmere, they did a great job. So hopefully more power for the Snowy Mountains 1000.

I also found that my infernal, sorry internal wastegate was open which now explains the funny noise the motor was making, not to mention that power had dropped off, sounded like squeaking cam belt bearing, I've been pulling parts off the car for weeks trying to track down the noise.

Also took the opportunity to fit a better up pipe. I also put an extra spring in my wastegate, its now running 19 psi gate pressure.

I bought some Cookie cutter from a seller on here, had them polished and painted, fitting some 205/50 x15 Mickey Thompson ET street to them next week.

Hi

Just got my new tyres fitted, 205/50x15 Mickey Thompsons and 195/55x15 Goodyears.

For the drags and the Snowy 1000 I was running 245/40x18 Mickeys.

The 18s had a diameter of 651mm, the 15s have a diameter of 588mm so these should help with acceleration.

1st gear @ 8000rpm will now do 73 instead of 82 kph
2nd gear @ 8000rpm will now do 125 instead of 139 kph
3rd gear @ 8000rpm will now do 182 instead of 197 kph
4th gear @ 8000rpm will now do 239 instead of 258 kph
5th gear @ 8000rpm will now do 299 instead of 323 kph

It should launch hard now i reckon....
