Thanks everyone,
Dave, 550lb/in = 9.8kg/cm... thats a hard spring! I remember running 8kg/cm on the front of my previous GTR and they were hard as hell, though that
could have in part been due to the dampner rates too. I presume you have this rate matched to your dampners to get good squat and rebound on the drag
strip right? So ive had a re-think and i'll take your suggestion of 450lb/in = 8kg/mm and go with 150lb/in or 2.7kg on the front.
About the tail light lenses... I had a set of clear ones that I was going to use but the quality was so bad with how they were glued together that I
couldnt use them. Ive got to get a new set and will probably go standard red/yellow and leave it at that.
Ive also got to get myself a DM200 LCD display for my wideband system too so I can stick the gauge to the windscreen and see what the AFRs are when Im
driving without having to take my eyes off the road.
Ive got 2 weeks to sort out sourcing these bits, and sorting out the tail lights and suspension as im going to be working next sunday and attending a
wedding on saturday.
Grogy, Im already in QLD!... Cairns is about 2400km north of the border.

ahh yep, i thought that might be the case, they seem to be a very poorly produced part compared to other lenses, ive only ever seen one or 2 versions
that looked semi good, though once in sunlight for awhile things may of changed, again though this thing looks awesome

Yeah the 450lbs rate may still be a bit stiff for your comfort,
but just a rough bit of maths will tell you
that the car is going to squat at least 2" when the weight transfers on a launch.
...but I would guess it is a little heavier than 1800lbs too.

[ I think I’ll be changing the gear ratios in the box at some stage as the spread isn’t particularly friendly. And changing back to 1st gear whilerolling to get around neighbourhood roundabouts is tricky, as the 1st gear synchro isn’t very accommodating.]
Hi Ian, I've been following this build, and think that your bug is awesome. Well done!!!
I have i similar gear box (G64-21)6sp, you will get use to the ratios. I thought the same, but even launching at the strip with the long 1st, I'm
able to get a
1.52 60ft in a bus weighing 3500p.
My idle is 1900rpm to 2100rpm so in 1st gear it sees 20kph (fast for a car park) and most back street corners are back to 1st. Also 2100rpm is 100kph
in 6th (idling). Just a different style of driving.
Alsow makes it a challenge to tune.

Sorry no drive by video yet...
Aaron, I think your right about the gearbox. I am sure ive been driving the car like a bit of a girl too, trying to not rev the engine too much and
spin the wheels. Yet also trying to not stall it. Im sure that driving fast will be a lot easier to do than trying to drive civilised. The car does
spin the wheels very easily though, especially when reversing up my steep paved driveway into my shed. Cruising around 80km/h was around 2200 in 3rd
from memory.
I've gad a win with the suspension today. I found out that the front and rear springs are actually interchangable, so ive swapped them front to rear
and now have 7kg on the rear and 4kg on the front. I have to go for another test drive and see how it feels on the weekend. The rears are shortened
springs though so they still need to be replaced.
Ive still got to put in the inner valve springs, which is another job for later in the week. The data logger add-on and a mini flat LCD screen are on
its way to aid with the road tuning. I'll be able to mount the LCD straight to the windscreen in front of the driver much like the MFD on my GTR.
Thats all for now.
Ian.

I've been killing to see this beast together on on the road and it looks tuff as. It looks like you could go a bit wider in the rear wheels from some
angles. That would be seriosuly tuff!
Congratulations on one FINE build!

I tend to agree, either with some width or some offset or both. I might add that this is merely an observation, as the car is looking seriously
awesome.
any ideas or plans for running boards or gonna keep the current look to maximise the appearance of the wide and low stance?

I love this build, only thing I would alter is the lack of running boards, it just makes the guards look so much wider without them. However trying to
step over a foot wide running board would be an experience in itself

you could always taper them from each end so that you are not having to take a running leap to get into the car, rather just a standing start.
Either way it is a work of art.

Yes indeed running boards will definatly be being made to fill the gap with the guards and likle Goldie suggested i'll be tapering them in near the
door and then going wide again as it goes past the B pilar.
Going to a wedding this weekend too, so I am not going to be able to acomplish anythng new with the car for another week... which will probably allow
my wallet to stop gasping for air.

No more video yet.
I spent 1/2 the weekend chasing and resolving oil leak issues from the pushrod tubes. One of the unexpected joys of an oxy boxer is that there isnt
really a good pushrod tube solution that fits well. Ive used adjustable pushrod tubes which are larger at the case end so they seal, but they really
are too short for the job. I had used a few shims at each end of the pushrod to move the seals further out but that causes other issues.
It seems the perfect solution will be to custom make a new and longer end for the head end of the pushrod tube. For the moment though after having
pulled all the pushrod tubes 3 times Ive finally got an engine that doesnt leak oil again.
Ive come up with a design for my alloy running boards at last too. I should have them partially fabricated by the end of the week. They are going to
involve a few trips to the sheet metal fabricators.

Hey all...
Quick update. I have finally been able to get a machine shop to properly fold a radius onto some sheet alloy so I can make some running boards. As
simple as that might sound, its been bloody hard to try and get it done in Cairns. Between being promised "yeah sure we can do it", waiting a week
to not still not have them done, and finally having them done but with a 90 degree bend instead of a radius, oh... and then being over charged for
something I didnt want... well you get the idea.
In the end, a machine shop had the better tools to do the job than the sheet metal places... go figure. So I picked them up this afternoon and set
about making my wide ass running boards/stone deflectors.
The plan is that they will bolt to the guards front and rear with 10mm bolts, and to the 90 degree angle 40x20x3mm (that you cant see) with some 6mm
button head stainless bolts.
They arent going to be level either. I am angling them down to the road, from the sill at an angle of around 25-30 degrees, to help give the car a
lower appearance and tie them into the lower edges of the aero guards a little better.
Once im happy with the fitment, they come off to be powder coated in gloss black to match the headlight trim and taillight trim. The stainless bolts
wont be painted.
Im thinking of getting some stickers made up for them with a German skull and cross bones in a WW2 hat, and "Do Not Step"
written under it... to keep away feet.
That is all...
Ian

Very close. Ive taken the car for a few more drives and make changes each time I do. Mostly suspension and steering adjustments, and now the car
feels planted stable when driving.
EFI (and probably my intake pipe diameter) doesnt quite make the cam Ive chosen very drivable down low, but from 3000 rpm the car wants to just rev.
To give you an idea, the seat of my pants dyno tells me that its quicker than my GTR which was running around 300awhp. I have positive manifold
pressure from around 2200 rpm but drivability at that speed is a little dubious still and requires more tuning.
The data logger I ordered nearly a month ago still hasn not arrived. The company happily accepted my payment and then just forgot to dispatch it.
Ive since had words and now have a tracking number that says it will be here in a few more days.
Im going to be re-making the right side running board as it didnt come up right, but the left was ok. Ive also replaced the tail lights with the more
modern thing/lbug type lights, which suit the shape of the aero guards a lot better. I'll take some photos soon once the running boards are painted
and finished.
So for the moment everything is on hold till the data logger arrives. When it does there is only that to install, and a pump for the water to air
intercooler setup. Then tuning tuning tuning.

I haven't made much progress with the bug lately. Ive been flatout with work in general, and other projects.
The data logger I purchased for the bug didnt perform as desired. While it did work, it slowed my laptop down to the point that it was too slow to
use, which is pointless. Im working on sorting out an alternative but need more time to get it done. I just need more time.
The other project that has been occupying most of my time is my GTR stroker engine project, which is now in my car and being run in. Rb26 block,
sleeved, spaced and stroked to 3.15lt.
