It is not bullshit. The average employee on the floor at the car manufacturers is $55/hour. For general manufacturing it is $32/hour.
The difference is what makes them uncompetitive. I am sure there are also other little things in their contracts that restrict productivity as well
and they will all add up to being uncompetitive. The unions keep their heads up their backsides to the pressures businesses face and think the
business will carry on no matter what.
The reality is that at some point, the company just says enough and either close or move overseas.
I am not saying we should be working for asian wages but we do have to be aware of what is going on around us. We need to have competitive
productivity AND decent quality control.
If we are not careful, Qantas will be going down the same road for the same reasons.
I personally will not buy anything Australian or US built in cars unless it is backed by a Japanese or European quality control system.

I don't know where they got that $55/hour figure, but I'm a graduate engineer in the automotive industry and I'm earning a lot less than that! I do
agree that the production line workers at Holden get paid very well though. Their union is strong and they have excellent wages as a result. Compare
this to the pitiful wages that motor mechanics get, despite the fact that they are much more highly trained and qualified!

Yeah... we don't really have a union, and it's also not a regulated industry... so we will always be screwed.
