Righto, back in action to assemble the ute.
I took the auto down to Sydney last week where the motor was being rebuilt. We connected it all and fired it up. Sounds sweet. Too long a drive to
bring it back and find it won't start.
Then the job of cleaning it all out and fish oiling it. What a bastard of a job crawling in the treasure chest trying to spray fish oil everywhere. I
certainly won't rust. I sprayed 3 litres in every hole I could find, some of it even stayed with the ute, most runs out on the floor.

Started here behind the dash, sorting wires, putting wiper motor in whilst it is easy, cutting the few added wires out and generally tidying things
up.
Just remembered to pull the ignition out as I didn't get a key with it.
All cables oiled up and working smoothly.
Dash will go in next.

H4 Crystal Xenon headlights with Mega White 60/55w Halogen bulbs now fitted after soldering all the wires behind that had been scotch locked
previously.

Coming together quite well now.
While I think of it, I have new Fuch alloys going on it an will not need the existing alloys that have reasonable to good tyres on them.
If someone out there has a good use or knows of someone that could do with them, happy to give them to a good home, but hopefully to someone who needs
or deserves them.

Bit more work done today.
Front door rubbers are in, have tried it without gluing except for the area near the checkstraps. Hope they stay in.
The LED taillights are Ebay specials just trying for the older look but with modern efficiency.

The front VW badge was challenging.
Firstly, trying to get the right position as there were no existing holes, so looking at images on google trying to judge the right place.
Secondly, I have bought a stainless steel badge which has 4 threaded studs on the back. After drilling the four holes, I find that the top two are
totally inaccessible from inside the cab as they are behind the permanent air ducting.
As the badge is flat and the front is curved, the badge needs to be pulled in to sit flush.
My solution was to bend the top studs upwards, hook them through the top holes and then put nuts on the bottom ones to pull it in. It worked.

Starting to carpet over the insulation now.
Using 'boat carpet' which is waterproof and therefore I hope won't hold any moisture.

Also started on the window regulators today.
First, a thorough clean as they are stiff and full of old grease and dirt.
I have bought an after market electric winder kit and going to try reversing the winder part so that it is all hidden inside the door.

The mechanism drill apart OK and even though I thought I had cleaned it well, it was full of hard packed muck.
So, further clean then welded it back together facing inwards. Had to cut spaces out of the other half so they would locate on the winder tube.
Just have to get my head around all the parts in the kit and then see if it will all fit inside the door frame and clear the glass etc.

Spent a bit of time installing the hood lining, isn't that a fun job.
Working upside down by yourself and doing it without knowing which part to do first.
New ones come about 100mm too big all round which further confuses you.
At least I got it up there, albeit with a few waves in it.
I have walked away from it now but will give it a few more hours later and try to stretch it in the right directions.
It'll look alright from 10 feet on a dark night.

Thanks Perezoso, good to know that the journey is helpful to others.
Started on the dash now.
Took off the chequer plate addition and welded up all the holes that were not needed.
I bought a blue stitched leather dash cover and spent a few frustrating hours stretching and gluing it on.
End result not too bad.

Leather covered dash is now all bolted in with all the ducting cleaned and sealed.
Added these 'Ambulance' fans in which to be honest I had never heard of till recently.
One each side in the ducting and 2 speed motors.
Might even give driver and passenger their own control switch.
Should heat up a single cab in record time i think.

Seat heat switches now mounted in the dash under the radio hole.
Wiring and relays for it secured under the dash and marked so i remember what they are all for.

Still got stuff everywhere going on.
Started assembling the doors which is painfully slow to do.
Stupidly, I put the quarter window and moulds on and then realised/remembered that the winder mechanism has to go in first so had to unassemble it and
do it again.

Electric window mechanism now in.
As mentioned before, the winder gear box was drilled off, turned around so that the spline faced inwards and then spot welded together again.
This allows all the works to be inside the door out of the way.
Central locking mechanism mounted which also required a lever mechanism to be made and mounted in the door as the activator didn't have enough grunt
for the kombi locks.
So a fulcrum leverage thingo did the trick.

Steering column rubbed back and painted with pressure pak.
Mounting it in and getting that damn horn wire at the base of the column connected was yet again another frustrating challenge, but done.

The old front bar was carefully taken apart as the rubbers and alloy moulds are a bit delicate.
A few ding repairs, a coat of paint and reassemble.
Brand new second hand bar.
Still no luck with a rear bar as this ute was a one year model for brackets etc.
Might have to make an alloy rear bar, i think.

I have eight set of two holes around the tray where the tailgate and side gate brackets normally mount.
I don't have these gates and don't intend to ever get them as i like the look of these utes without them.
I made a steel sample of flat plate with a cut of shackle welded to it.
I will get eight of these made in stainless.
These will then make great tie down points for when the missus has her kayak on the back. (This is the original intended purpose of this project)
