ive now got the laptop working again so here are some updated pics.
the right sill after repair

the right front guard

the right rear guard

the left front guard

the right rear turret

the right hand heater channel repair

the left rear turret

the left quarter

with the body and pan separated before the swap

the rear of the body

pulling the engine out of the other one to make the body swap easier

the old body minus pan

us changing the body over the old pan is out and now moving the new pan in

the old pan before the damaged body went back on it

the body has been changed and the pan has been scraped back to make sure its rust free. the new pan sitting under the body

the engine is now in the stand awaiting a rebuild with a new exhaust system to be built to allow it to breath better not that there was a problem with
the old system just that im thinking two tail pipes running out the stock cutouts. i might even redo the fan housing and the covers on the heater
boxes as well while we are at it. just to make it look neater. might even have to move the oil filler due to the alternator going in as well so watch
this space

my tuck away exhaust

got a little closer to having it painted. most of it is now sanded back in prep for painting and the new pan seal has been installed.
here some of it being installed

and after it was installed

the front shocks installed

found this while sanding back damn rust, some one before had filled it from the inside of the car with bog

with the heater fans installed and wired up

heres the guard that i cracked in the crash before the repair

after the first layer of glass

after the repair

preping the body. i started on the bonnet

just a few stone chips and paint layers

just before its final sanding

the doors got the same treatment

the roof was next it had rust spots in the paint so it coped a floggin to be sure

some stoneguard was sprayed under the guards on the body to deaden the road noise

every thing was then bolted back on the car to save my old man some space in his work shop

and just to round it out heres one more of my engine from a different angle
if any one is after those lovely leopard door trims for a kombi
contact me

if i was in another one, pray to god it doesnt happen, id prefer to be in a bug thats straight, rust free in the turret and has inertia belts but
thats just me. i like my steel to be thicker than it is in newer cars.
|
Newer cars are designed to crumple at the front, rear and sides to save your life, whilst maintaining a rigid safety cell in the middle. In the Bug's
design days, that nice thick steel is a killer. VW made the steering wheel collapsable in the 60's but things like inertia reel seatbelts, full back
head rests, effective brakes and padded interiors are foreign to early stock bugs.
I was watching Discovery the other day, and they have a great program on how research has made cars safer over the years. It used to be that crashes
at above relative velocity of just 50 km/h were not survivable, but people now regularly walk away from frontal collisions with a delta v of near to
100 km/h.
I'd rather be in a modern car, with "thin" steel, brakes that work and airbags, than a old death trap any day.
Andrew
ps. Sorry about responding to a post that's more than six months old
pps. Good work on the new car!
