Ross Freestone from the Tamworth has run 10.71 at 124(1600lbs) in his "Hound Dog" Beetle way back in '92 I think.
He still has the car, but never races it.
I heard rumours that he was going to step it up and get his ss/c record back.
Berg's is the fastest N/A Beetle to ever run in Australia @ 10.37@128.98mph(1680lbs)
The power that Berg produced whilst here in Australia in 1995 was was fantastic, even by todays standards.(lots of RPMs!)

I remember that!.... I also remember that Gary had a hell of time keeping oil in the engine.... It kept blowing it out the breather!... He ended up
making a huge butt ugly (it was painted white too Dave ) oil
breather tower at Hellbug to contain it!... I wonder where that container is now?... I don't think its still on the car, because the BERG's aren't
running the 'BIG' engine anymore... It would make a nice collectable!

Yes I want to sell this project.
$3500 is the asking price and just ask if you want any more photos.
Has fiberglass doors and panels, ladderbars, 11.5" tyres on 10" rims.
Mounts to suit a Bus gear box and also axles to suit 930 (or Commadore) CV joints.
No front suspension, and will need uprade to rear roll cage bars to be legal for ANDRA(need 1.625" and are currently 1.25")
I am on the Gold Coast QLD and can be contacted via U2U.
I will post this in the "For Sale" section later, but here is my home
and less tyre kickers frequent this place.

More photos tomorrow, but there are no front wheels and tyres, nor front beam.
You may like to replace all the bar work from the winscreen forward.
All the main structure is tip-top. The damage was limited to the front beam
and tubes up to where the pedals were mounted.
Rear damage was limited to the bars rear of the engine, but you may want to
redesign the rear suspension, or replace it with a swing axle, and re-use the 32" ladder bars.

I will dig out the ladder bars tomorrow and show them in place.
The axles in some of the first few photos above are 12" long and have a spline to suit Commadore, or 930 CV joints.
The CVs are now fitted to my pan car, but any wreckers will sell you the GM or german CVs,
and you can use the flanges to weld onto some beetle stubs and Kombi tranny flanges.

Sorry to spoil everyones hopes with me and this car.
I really love to drive my Pan VW and I think it will be a long time before
I get a chance to put any money into fixing this one....I have so much more unfinished business with the pan-car.
The other thing is that I can make better use of the money at this time,
and the space that the car has been taking up since I crashed it in November 2002.

It is sad to hear this Dave, but I for one, understand your situation... All the massive work that you have put into your racing over the years is
inspirational stuff to us all.... And you can only spread yourself so far.... Lets hope the chassis car will live again soon, and be out there

Dave took the time to show me some video of this car in action and I can only say it was pretty inspiring stuff. I can say however, I've had the
opportunity to see it in person under Daves house. With some minor work (and i'm by no means an expert but appreciate good work) this would be a
great purchase.
It would be great to see another volksy on the track.

As I was fitting this side up for the photos I have a view that this Idea will work pretty good.
I would like to re-mount the inboard anchor however.
It is just tacked on the chassis rail at the moment.

Despite the camber change, I think this system will work pretty good.
It should be as good, or better than any other swingaxle drag car.
The camber change will be limited by the strap.
The actual camber angle can be adjusted (with out a ride height change) using the inboard hiem joint.
The toe-in can be adjusted with the forward hiem joint.
The roll centre will be lower than a conventional swingaxle.
It will be around the centre line of the diff, rather than above the tranny like a normal Beetle swingaxle.

Hi Nick,
Yes after the crash I changed the rear suspension from a deDeon ,
to what you see here.
There WAS a dropped axle type thing connecting the bearing housings on both sides
and it went under the tranny with a 'track locater' to stop lateral shift.
The ladder bars remain the same, and I cut the dropped axle to make these new, independant 'trailing arms'.
I think it needs some tidying and perhaps a small brace on the inboard 'anchor',
but other than that...I reckon it would be sweet.

When the car had a deDeon axle AND the ladder bars, the car COULDN'T roll on its longitudinal axis.
This is not the case anymore.
When I crashed the car, it just spun out and hit the wall on both ends of the car, it didn't actually rollover.
Still...pretty scarey at 134mph backwards!
