HI all, well a bit of progress has happened since last i posted, the gearbox has been built, by Dangerous, my engine parts have arrived from Aircooled
Technology, i have been playing around with the suspension, hopefully the body will be getting worked on soon. Aiming for Warwick for completion but
would prefer a good month before to get everything done right and tested, especially those big arse brakes. Here's some pics, cheers Damo.

I'm sure you could find a pic of Hot Maxie (aka Snickers) somewhere on the net if you really tried Dave!
Oh yeah, since my lefty is now semi-famous - I keep telling my wife it needs extra special attention....doesn't seem to work (I might have to give it
a special name like Damo does, maybe that will work!) hehehe

Got started on Damo's beetle the other day (couple of hours) and continued today. The rear apron is going to be removable so all the spot welds were
drilled out (thanks to Damo for the spot weld drill bit!!).
After cutting the necessary metal out from the inner support pieces the apron comes off, and whadayknow...there is always rust hiding somewhere!
Both sides
That is often the problem the old vw's rust from the inside out in a lot of places. This will make installation and removal of those stonking type
IVs a breeze...
What started out as one tiny hole in the upper strengthener turned out to be a myriad of rust inside.....what started out as a four hour job turned
into an 8 hour job!

My aim with any rust repair is to make it invisible - I have seen some bad examples in the past of plates tack welded over existing rust which only
delays the inevitable. I like to cut as much out as needed (but also like to leave as much original metal as possible), then butt weld in the new
metal.
The first patch toward the rear was pretty easy due to access, but the piece behind the side trays (on each side) was not easy especially to weld
(laying underneath flying red hot slag) as well as getting grinder etc into to knock down the welds. Knowing Damo I knew he'd want it done right even
though it would cost some extra bucks initially.
The remaining paint will be knocked back before a skim coat of fillier will be applied before primer is layed down.
The little pin holes were welded up after this pic
So this is the inner section repaired - tonight finished up with the outer repair pieces being fabbed up. Obviously an entire bumper hanger
replacement panel would be easier, but cost is a consideration.....and also aligning the bumper etc would have taken some fiddling. Also Damo, I
replaced the two bolts that were snapped off in the bumper mounts.
Rust preventative paint was applied to the repair pieces (and wherever I could get it into the nooks and crannies) and tomorrow I'll weld in the
outer pieces and finally get back onto the actual apron!

Got a bit more done today - patches were welded in on the outer sections - pressings were left in place for drain holes and also up the top holes were
left to apply cavity wax (will be done after paint is applied).
Passenger side
Damo is going for the clean shaven look so the sound deadening tabs and wiring tabs were removed on the firewall.
After some trimming the apron goes on and off with no fouling (will save scratches later when paint is applied) - the lip where the spot welds were
drilled out will be cut off and replaced next week (three days left as an audiologist - then full time in the restorations!!).
Everything looks neat
You can see the rust holes in the lip that was under the apron - filler wouldn't last 6 months over rust like this so it had to be repaired.

The problem area was cut out.
New metal was welded in and ground down.
This evening I sanded down the engine bay ready for primer (hopefully by the end of the week if all goes to plan). Then I'll finish the apron mods
and support brackets to stiffen up the rear end (so the apron is clamped between the guard and body)....all takes time
