Judy I use spies hecker two pack base coat (it was a metallic grey colour) - two coats. Then another two to three coats of clear.

Basically the same paint you use on the the body of the car (ie. using a compressor, regulator/water trap, gravity fed spray gun etc). Hope that helps a little :rolleyes:

Cheers Nick - I love the resto process, although at times it is tests the patience, it is certainly very satisfying in the long run.

Anyway, the breast plate is back on and painted alternator and crank pulleys are back on. Pedal assembly was also painted (forgot to take pics).

Yeah mate, the dog is still nuts - she just turned 4 but is still like a pup!

I actually saw you cruising along at Kirra - I was on the way to have another look at wintersun (was on the motorbike with my wife). I couldn't wave (going around the roundabout....and figured you wouldn't know who I was anyway!).

Finally I got around to doing a bit of work on this project again after spending so long working on the other beetle.

Managed to fit the new master cylinder and run all new brake lines - would have got a bit more done but rain prevented any work outside. Need some more parts before progressing further though.

Thanks malcolm - yep our dog sasa is good - never steals any tools or parts!

Managed to get the detailed gearbox into position using new rubber front and rear mounts as well as nose cone seal - front beam hopefully back into place tomorrow and maybe body back on pan soon.

how 'painful' is the prep work needed for the product?

Is it better than the Killrust paints?

Thus far I am very happy with the Rustbullet - haven't had much of a chance to evaluate its strength yet (ie. chipping etc), however the prep required is 10 times easier than POR15.

It doesn't self level quite as well as POR (hence you can see some brush strokes) - but applying it with roller to large flat areas would probably help. I think the reduced time and "pain" in prep is worth it in itself.

I will have some at valla ($66 per quart [ie. approx 1 L]) if anyone wants some - this is on behalf of Andy at Volksfolks ( http://www.volksfolks.biz ). Let me know in advance if anyone wants a tin.

New urethane shift coupling was installed along with new shift rod bushing - should make for nice clean smooth shifts!

The detailed front adjustable beam was also bolted back in place - looks like rustbullet but it is actually two pack base/clear coat.

New floor pan seal also stuck into position (need to cut out bolt holes before body goes back on).

G'day mate - I am pretty sure you can two pack over it but its probably worth finding out a definite answer before taking my word. Andy from Volksfolks ( http://www.volksfolks.biz ) is the distributor - I am merely a middle man since he is in tassie and I am up here. I bought two tins so he sent some extras in case people were chasing them in qld/nsw - you could email Andy re. two pack over the top, or possibly email the actual company ( http://www.rustbullet.com ) for more certain answers!

Just a few quick update pics - body is now back on pan and bolted in place. Front beam is on and gearbox ready to go (but have to put spring plates back on first). Brake drum backing plates painted and drums and shoes currently being machined. Slowly but surely its coming together.

Cheers Andrew - bit hard to say exactly cost at this stage. I am trying to restore every aspect of the beetle as well as possible, and in as much detail as possible....however I am trying to not go overboard as I would never recover my outlay. Once it gets closer to completion I'll have a better idea of its value (sorry I can't be more help right now).

In between working on my brother in laws KG, managed to do a little to the beetle today - got the brake drums (which have been machined along with new shoes radius matched) back together (and new wheel cylinders). Rears aren't on yet, may get the spring plates back on tomorrow hopefully.

Nice to meet up with a few members at burleigh today for a beer (esp beerdoc who is in Qld on hols). :beer

After a long time in storage, the wide 5 drums finally were installed onto the ball joint front end - new flexible brake lines ready to go.

Spring plates are almost done, surf was too good today so didn't get quite as much done as expected!

just a quick question for u das, wen u are spraying the 2pac base coat do u let it dry then lightly go over it with a fine wet and dry then clear coat it? or do u just put the clear straight on?

Definitely not lightly sand before clear - any fine scratches etc will show through the clear, not to mention if you have metallic it will significantly affect how the metallic reflects the light.

If you have a blemish in the base coat, you can hit it with fine wet and dry (eg. a run) but then you must spray another light coat of base before applying the clear (generally each paint manufacturer will have a recommended flash time between base and clear).

Pete, yep wide 5 is cool! I have a couple wheel options at the moment but will hold off revealing until I have decided.

Rear backing plates are back on and hard lines are connected. New bearing seals etc of course - even though they are all stock drums, it should pull it up pretty well considering the entire system is new.

G'box also refilled with oil (new axle boots installed). Lost two bearing retainer plate bolts so will source some new ones tomorrow - then rear drums can go back on. Can't remember if I have the brake fluid reservoir (if not, will have to track one down)....then brakes can be filled and bled. I'll drop it on some crappy old stock wheels for now until I get the rest sorted, then will put on the wheels of choice (still haven't decided as noted above!). Then the wiring, and the engine and all misc ancillaries so lots to go yet.
