Taking it easy

Yeah this will make life heaps better, as now i can clean the whole underside, repair and paint etc.
This set up I thought was the best and %90 of panel work is fixing front and rear ends.
This way I have great access to both and nothing to trip over.
I have also made it to take a floor pan and my next project a country buggy.
Killed a few birds with one stone so to speak.

I still have to finish it by fully welding it all up, fit the wheels and paint it.
I'll post another update of the whole thing done hopefully next week.:thumb

panel work

Well the serious panel work has begun. As the car is going to be fitted with a later motor and the oval beetle engine bay is very small so the rear apron has been made so it can be removed.
Also the car has had a knock in the front at some stage of its life and needs a good clean up.
I always thought i'd cut the bit of panel off and weld in a fresh bit but maybe not just yet.

How did you go with the rear apron Nath? Not too hard hey.....just have to make sure you trim the apron enough up the top corners so that when you slide it up and off it doesn't catch anywhere and scratch all the paint.

Looking forward to seeing some pics :tu:

I have the same problem.
The good thing is its on wheels. You can take it outside to rotate and then wheel it back inside.
The only thing is if its all the way up, you have to work on it out side. But its nice working outside on a sunnyday.:beer

rear apron

The rear apron now has been removed , repaired and now can be taken off and on. Make work on the motor side of things easy.
This rear apron was just about shagged.
Dean Harvey at Inverloch sorted out all the panel work thats was beyond me.
It all comes down to having the skills and right tools to recover some panels that are in need of some serious work.

mounted

The rear apron mounts up just like normal but has two extra plates the allow it to bolt up on the inside as well as the last to guard bolts. I wished to keep the inner skin and engine seal etc.

Front clip

This was the part i was about to cut off!
The front clip on one side was what most of us would cut off, but not wanting to do this Dean and Neville sorted this out also.

It had a good hit here at some stage in its life and just looked %*#@.
Anyway it hasn't been cut and shut, i have had some of the stuff that was over my head done for me by a very good panel beater. As you can see this is starting to look the goods.
And his tools, a hammer chisel and a file and i tought i didn't have many tools.

Seat belts

Due to the fact that as this beetle is pre seat belts I have cut all the mounts out of a 60's beetle and welded them all in.
Nothing worse than flying though your windscreen!
The finish on these is not all that important as its all covered by the interior etc.

shape change

As you can see the shape is a little different to and oval but nothing a bit of cutting and welding wouldn't fix.
The rear belt mounts were a perfect fit.

This rear quarter needed some work.
It had a large crack and a long crease.
Its all been welded up and knocked back into shape and has had a thin wipe of lead and is in the process of being filed back to shape.:thumb

trouble

Having trouble getting rear guards!
I'm up to checking the alignment of the guards to the body but as i don't have any rear guards I'm a bit stuck.
If anyone knows of some please let me know.:thumb They need to be in half good shape and have the raised bits between the bolt holes.

As for the floor pan not much as happened but I've collected most of the bits for the rebuild.
