Use whatever works for you but I find a 36 grit disc on either my angle die grinder (like a quick twist on disc) or on a high speed air sander (this
is my new favourite tool!) works best for me. 36 grit knocks it down fast, you can switch to 60 or 80 after that just before the welds are flush with
the metal to avoid deep scratches in the metal itself.
Well, what a day....just finished up for the day (night?) - trust me Brendenn I'm trying hard to get the chop top done ASAP!!
Today all the guards were reprimed and then tonight sanded (320 dry, then 600 wet). I found the base coat just shows the sanding scratches through if
left with 320 dry (even 400) so hitting it with the 600 wet will avoid any unsightly scatches showing through the top coats.
Anti chip coating was applied as well.
Tomorrow (after a surf as it was epic this arvo....hopefully the same tomorrow!) should see final sand on the roof and doors (everything else done),
then mask....and if all goes to plan paint!

By the time of this post you can probably tell I've been having a few late nights lately!
This morning saw the final sand of the chop top (ended up having to resand with 800 grit wet to ensure sanding scratches weren't visible). Then the
masking started (thanks to my wife Katie for her help today!)
You might notice a new surrounding for the background of the pictures...guess who has a new shed!! More details soon - this is what has been keeping
me busy lately!
Just another view.

After lots of time masking and cleaning (after spending last night till 1am sanding!), the body was ready for paint. It was nice to see some black
(yes that is the colour!) base coat flow down. Then some clear afterwards. As you can see from the light outside day turned to night by the time I was
ready to lay down the paint.
Here is the rear right guard after 3 coats of clear (over the "back in black" in base).
You can see that the body turned out pretty straight.
Again thanks to Steff for the lead on the new Devilbiss Gti pro guns - I just need to save the coin for a screw compressor to get clean, dry reliable
pressure air delivery to make the most of the guns.
I had to slip one mug shot in! Unfortunately since I haven't had the chance to get the feel for the new guns there was a few sags and runs which will
be fixed with colour sanding. Once I get the booth set up the imperfections will be reduced drastically!

So your wait is no longer - the chop top is black as black can be!
Tail lights and running boards of course painted as well. Decklid still needs some fabrication and then paint.
Probably my favourite shot of tonight - like it has been dipped. Pity a few bugs settled in the clear - all will sand/buff out though. Booth setup
starts on monday fortunately.
Quick shot of the shed - all the crap on the right is part of the full down draft booth - will free up some room as it gets installed.....DAS Resto
Haus will be ready to trade soon!

Hearing business has been sold - I am currently an employee for the new owners for a few months....then full time with the resto business! Will take
quite a while to set the shop up properly (when funds allow).
Cheers for the kind words - was a bit hard to avoid sags in the clear without adequate lighting (should have prepared a bit better) - can't wait for
that booth! It is a second hand one, but I will give it a new coat of paint etc after it is installed.....new ones were well out of my budget! A
necessary installation though not only for one's health, but also because as a business it is compulsory - there are a few businesses on the gold
coast that are spraying without a booth daily, the council will probably catch up with them one day.

As I was reading this, I thought thats not a shed its a bloody warehouse. Far out, makes the average garage resto look cheap
Gongratulations on the paint job, its bloody beautiful - well done.
Wish you were closer to Sydney, I would be bring my car over for a respray. Keep up the great work.

Skills
Das,
As always your skills astound me.
Good to see you have the Resto business underway. Would be good to be in your shoes and turn something you love passionately into your business.
Wish you all the best of luck - the other Resto places on the Goldie had better watch out!!!!
Just a quick question - How come the guards are hung to paint this beast rather than do them off the body?
As it is a drag bug is the rubber moulding between the body and guard done away with or is that in place already?

Thanks westi, Kevin and Matt.
Matt, with regards to the guards on the car - there are several ways you can approach it. In this instance the inner guards were coated in anti stone
chip and hence didn't need painting (if the inner guards were painted gloss black I would have painted the guards off the car). The bolts are all
loose and there is a gap between the guards and body so the paint can get to the surfaces where the beading sits (yep it will go back on).
