Geez was that a race axle or stock? Is the rest of the box OK?

It was a race axle, old school 'crown' I believe.
The box had all gears and from what we could tell no schrapnel made it up the axle tube so hope fully all will be fine.

Backing it up a little for the rest of the forum…

A few months ago while prepping for an race meet I noticed a loose valve guide and sent the motor down to Dr Dave to go through it to and make sure it was all good for the planned nitrous venture and to allow it to run on pump gas. Turns out it was lucky we did because the centre main had issues and Dave has made a heap of improvements.

While the motor was apart Dave dropped the compression to 11.5:1, added ceramic/Teflon coated wiseco pistons, titanium valves and retainers, new valve springs, ARP rod bolts and some head work. My ultimate goal was to drop the compression and go to pump gas (so I can turn laps of Willowbank without impacting the children’s education fund) without losing to much power.

The result: to say I am happy would be an understatement, we ended up gaining 6 - 8hp after going down in compression, dropping the fuel to 98 octane and adding air filters.

To give respect where it is due, I can't thank Dave enough! The service that he provides is phenomenal!

The observations that I have made in dealing with Dave is that he listens to what is the goal and did not run off on his own tangent. He kept me informed (emails with pictures and explanations) at every point, this helps give comfort that you are not being taken for a ride (not that any VW operators do). And the clincher – he is ultra efficient and turns the work around really quickly.
After less than 48hrs of me dropping the motor to him, I had a complete list of the new items I required, initial head flow figures and photos of the things that he was not happy with.
His facilities are great including his latest addition of the flow bench. Great for initial readings and then seeing the gains. On my old school Superflow 1 heads, Dave picked up a heap of cfm in the lower lift and solid gains in upper ranges ie 35% at .200 thou lift, 15% at .400 and approx. 5% at .650. The final cfm at .650 (25”) was 220.5 (correct me if I am wrong Dave). Also big gains in the exhaust right through the range and bare in mind I did not want to spend thousands…

Looking forward to getting a new set of axles… will keep ya’ll posted!
