WPVW Portland results
mixed results for team WPVW this year at Portland . The trip down to Portland was pleasant and un-eventful with the first night stay at Benalla , then
on to our destination the second day .
Weather was shitty friday afternoon and saturday morning but cleared enough for racing in the afternoon .
The WPVW turbo oval made only 2 passes on 2 cylinders and spent the rest of saturday afternoon and sunday morning trying to resolve the problem
without success . Problem believed to be a malfunction in the microtec ecu after I connected a staging device on wednesday night .
Chris Bolton in the WPVW turbo vee made his first and only pass of the weekend in 7.3@101.35mph . When Chris came out for his second run the vee
leaked oil on the start area , so we pushed it back to the pits and drained the engine oil as it was over-full as it had a lot of fuel in it . We
purchased new oil for the engine and started the engine to warm it up and it just locked-up . It stayed on the trailer for the rest of the weekend .
Congratulations to Chris on 2nd fastest mph for the weekend....and on his very untidy shakedown pass !!
BEN FORD DESPARATELY NEEDS WHEELIE BARS
Ben Ford in the WPVW supercharged bug was just awesome . 8 passes for the weekend with a best et of 7.59 @ 96mph and never leaked a drop of oil or a
puff of smoke !!
We have some great in-car footage of Ben with wheels-up action in that animal that he drives , a huge congratulations to him for not only getting his
bug prepared for this event , but also for a very successful drive at Portland 2011.
Ben had a moment on his 7th pass when he launched from the start line with the front wheels high in the air , got off the throttle and the bug came
down hard , got back on the noise pedal and the front end leaps into the air once again , gets it all tidy and passes in 7.6 & 92mph . He returns
to the pits to find the left shock tower broken off the new alloy beam .
TEAM WPVW are staying in Geelong tonight before heading back to Wollongong tomorrow.....
congratulations to all competitors on a great meeting and wishing everyone a safe trip back home.......

We had a cracker of a week end I pulled my fastest time ever on the Sat arvo when the track was great 9.665 with a .291 reaction
Yeah CT that would have been good if you bet your oval than I would have 3.
We got heaps of comment on the Nude Bug. Some one said I should set up a team of nude racers
It was well worth the effort to travel down there
I received trophy for fastest female and runner up in the finals congrats to everyone.
Well done to all the organisers of this wonderful event. I'm glad I didn't pack up Fri night and go home as it was shitty all day didn't look
good.
It was nice to catch up with all the vw dub guys again.
And again thanks to everyone involved and everyone who turned up to make it a great weekend
On Sun there where 17 competitors on my sheet for the air cooled.

It has an old 6volt 1200 syncro gear box.
Second hand clutch
54 standard gear stick
The gear box shaft coupling holes didn't line up with different gear box it took a few goes to get it to work. Screwed the coupling grub screw in
tight on the shaft as didn't match up with hole in the shaft.
runs the 54 standard brakes and suspension with drop spindles and some second hand managles
The engine is an old 1916 with twin webbers that we got out of an old beach buggy 5 years ago history unknown
All we did was cleaned carbs, checked tappets & points and changed the oil.
I have taken that engine to 5 drag racing events and still going strong.
really low budget racing for us
and I still have heaps of fun & amaze heaps of people when I tell them the story

Nice shots Rose, did you snag any shots of the old Austin Truck at Choco's camp?
Was good fun, as others have said, the rain put a fair dampner on it all, but it was still great fun, was great to see some old faces, and meet some
new ones too!
And Choco... Thanks for the laughs!

The Gringos entered four Beetles this year (with lots of hanger ons) Andrew had a great weekend with a 7.6 pass straight off the trailer on Sat. on
Sunday he got down to 7.4 blowing his dial in but who cares. Mine was running 8 dead all weekend but I broke first gear in the third round (same as
I did at Warwick) I might post a thread on this to see if any of the elders can give me some advice). Steve in Beetle Juice had carby troubles on Sat.
but we fixed it Sat. night and he ran in the mid nines all Sunday. Our newest Gringo Boris "the Russian" Senic entered his camo 1500 Beetle but was
proberbly a little under prepaired with fuel pump and clutch problems but he'll be back.
Apart from the weather we had a great time and loved seeing all the interstate guys and girls make the trip down. The Portland track is one of the
best in the country and Craig and the crew do a great job, thanks Craig.

Great weekend of racing. I ran a best time of 8.9 for the weekend. Blew my dial in but was happy to get below 9.0 for at least one run during the
weekend. T34 is a little unhappy with some oil leakage going on some where. But it was totally worth it. Roll on Portland 2012
