Oh look. Is it Lee Jnr?

All I can say is that however much it cost, to me it was worth it. And if it was too much for you, then just dont go next time. Maybe I am taking this a little personal but it kinda brings me down when people bitch about something that I live for.

There was a large donation made to the local VRA.

Take that away and what would they have?

The wrist band was for entry to the show, swap meet, festivities.
The money you pay for accomodation is for your bed.
The money you pay for dinner is for your food.
The money you paid on sunday was to have your car judged.
The money you pay for a swapmeet site was for a patch of ground where you presumably make money. call it rent.

Its the same as when you go to the Nationals. Nothing is free! It shouldnt be.

It costs money to book the park. Insurance. trophies. Somebody has to pay. I dont think Donna is getting rich off your back. She is still driving the same car she has had for many years. Get over it.

I'm not that fussed about the money. The main reason it was a shock was because the show was no-where near that price last 2 valla's, so why the sudden hike. Same # trophies, same judges. Can't tell me it was due to insurance. If they had a lower price more people woulda entered.

The racer's all getting $10 fines at the auctions was also a bit steep. Most clubs do those sort of fines but charge like 50c. But hey, I didn't get one of those so why am I complaining?

Maybe us QLD'ers are just spoilt. Dubs by the Pubs has more vw's than Valla, enough trophies to actually seperate buggies, baja's and kit cars, peoples choice judging, a huge cruise, a swap meet, and only costs like $5 or $10 (feel proud blbvw members).

Costs

I can settle this once and for all as I was involved with this from the start with Donna. The main reason for the price hike was down to extortionate public liability insurance costs and a main sponsor for the last few years pulling out.

Donna pulled out the stops to get the show organsed this year, and nearly had to scrap it due to the Public Liability costs. Luckily CAMS I think it was helped us get a reasonable quote, but if it wasn't for them, there would not have been a Valla 2003.

The good news is that Donna has a couple of major sponsors keen to help out after seeing how well things went this year. This may or may not affect the price on the gate next year, its all too early to tell.

Cheers

Steve

Amazer,
I sent My emil to Donna Pell and asked about the prices. I got a nice prompt reply and she is trying to get the costs of the show & shine down.
They have been using Street Machine Judges and have to pay their accomodation etc. I believe VWs should be judged by VW people... if thats possible, the costs should be able to be kept down to a "normal" level..
I will go whenever its on.... yearly etc..
Actually My Wife wants to go back for a Holiday... Its a nice place..
I love VWs - always have - always will..

As you can see i am new at the VW scene but i can honestly say that if you want to go or want to do something you will find nothing is for free these days and like it was mentioned earlier you can not please everyone with costs

This year was our frist time to attend an event like that and we both had a blast.

We own 2 VW and we took down both our cars, and i think the whole weekend cost like $400.00 and neither of us went without anything

I spent somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0k$, So every second year after the big 20 next year would be good. I don't regret any of the expense. I just wish I had another $500 for the Polished Cookie Cutters with almost new tyres at the swap meet. I saw the guy who bought them and thought it was an opportunity missed. My wife however chooses to disagree!

I dont see that every year would kill it! if you want something bad enough you just put a bit of cash away each week to do it!
Other than my passion for VW's I also have a BMW Boxer bike I have had for 17 years, I travel almost every second week, either to VW meetings or bike runs, I just got back from a 6000 kay run (border run) just to have a beer on one night and ride straight back home again (a BMW thing) I can do this because I only drink on special occations, I gave up smoking, and I dont waste my money on take away food, or any other useless junk! I would rather save my cash so I can go on VW, or BMW odysey's, if you really want to do it dont make excuses, there are some things in life that are worth making sacrifices for, don't you think Valla is one meet that is worth it! :thumb:thumb:D

Yeah I reckon VW people judges. Either people choice with a voting form given out at the front gate (when you get the arm band), or a couple or VW people from each club. Peoples choice always works well.

I must admit I didn't think the street machine judges knew what they were looking at most of the time. So they could only really judge if the car looked shiny and clean or not.

But that's enough whinging :). I would be there whenever they hold one. Maybe I could race next year :)

So what about the people without internet access, how will they know there is a Valla in 2004? Some people just turn up every 2nd year, they'll be disappointed when they arrive in 2005 and no-one is there?

Advertising woud soon fix the problem.....unless your from a commune in Nimbin somewhere and are anti media.....however your bound to be speaking to someone about volkswagens that would pass on the word....Word of mouth or an advertising poster at every spare parts business would be a goer.
The rest are either in clubs or belong to this forum.

I spose theres always school newsletters and church notices lol

hey

Good idea Wes :D here is an extract from the email I sent Donna a few hours ago..

" The general consensus seems to be that VW shows should be judged by VW people and not Custom Car Judges. Of course getting VW people to judge would have its own set of problems. Maybe, a suitable solution would be to get all the VW clubs around the place to nominate 1 or 2 people who are attending Valla to be judges and represent that club. This would give you a good spread of VW enthusiasts with a varied array of back grounds and taste. I also think asking the clubs to assist in the categories judged on would also improve peoples perceptions of the show and shine.

Maybe you could offer clubs the opportunity of sponsoring the event and if they did then they get to nominate 2 judges and some show categories ? "

Maybe more should suggest similiar lines if you all agree.

What about some guidelines that ALL show judges could abide by.

Well that's all nice if your trying to win best original or something. Others can verify when they looked at my car they spent more time looking at the carpet than they did looking at the engine. They had a quick look at the engine, didn't know what it was, so went elsewhere on the car. Kinda strange since I entered best engineered and they didn't look at the engineering. Rod Penrose was always gunna win that class anyway, but I expect to at least be judged.

The boys in the 4wd golf had exactly the same problem.

Dubs by the pub has everyone who goes on the cruise (like 200 people) voting for every car in every class. It seems to work quite well, although I must admit cars with shiny paint or looks cool also tend to win that style too, cos no-one looks much further than that. But hey, if that's what the people like.

It is always nice to win an award for hard work but I guess it is just the bonus...having the comments peple make on the street each time you drive it are more worthwhile for me (but thats just me).

I think the club representatives judging may have some "conflict of interest" as you will always have that loyalty to vote for one of your own (as much as you'd like to say you are totally unbiased).

People's choice is good but as Wes and others say, shiny paint and big wheels can attract. This is a good discussion, keep the opinions coming. If only we could find some vw enthusiasts who don't belong to one particular club, who know a lot about vw's and can appreciate ingenuity, authenticism, and overall appeal.....hmmm

I dont know if you noticed BUT there were 2 very qualified people standing besides the Street machine judges,,,,

This being Andrerw Dodd and Henry Spicak both of whom have been playing with VWs for more years than i can remember,

Andrew and Henrys job was to advise the SMJ what was STOCK and what wasnt.... This is why Jays car lost points for having a stock car with a 1600 fitted.... and no doubt other cars as well... Although Jays car was and is VERY good in all other areas.... I think she came in 2nd place in the cat she entered ??

THE CAR HAS TO FIT THE CATEGORY.

We do a similar thing at the VW nats cause we have people who simpley dont know what to enter there car in

VW spectacular and the VW Nats have tried to get CLUB Judges but hey everyone wants to havea good time....

If yar dont like the judging dont enter the show...

sit back n have a :beer:beer:beer

Or three
