Didn't know you could done for oversize tyres on a baja.
does anybody have copy of the modification guide that states vw types 1,2 and 3 are exemt from that rule due to beach buggy heritage?

It would be good if someone did. But seeing as no one has ever been actually able to show me a copy, does it actually exist?
And Chris, not doing to Transport anymore, they didn't want to see it. All I need to do is get a roadworthy and take that to the police.

The document was like a brochure from Dept of T'sport about allowable wheel/tyre combinations ( +1, +2 etc.) and the allowable variation front to
rear, in the wording it stated different sizes were allowable only if from the factory that way, but in the fine print it said 'except Volkswagen
types 1,2 & 3'

If I remember that was for rim width, you could go up to a 7 inch rim but track and height had to remain in the limits. I have that bulletin but I'm
in Townsville and it's in Mackay.

Firstly, Merry Christmas to all.
Seeing as everyone else is still in bed asleep I figured I have time to do a quick morning update to get Andrew off my back.
While the car was defected I figured it would be a good chance to get my rear disc brake conversion done. I've been planning it for a little while
and now was as good a time as any.
I'm using VN Commodore rear discs, which nicely match the VN discs I have on the front
First step was to strip all the old drum craps off and set it aside. I'm sooooo happy to finally get rid of these, having to adjust them after every
beach trip was annoying and shoes weren't even lasting 6 months.
I cut an old swingaxle axle tube down and set it up in the vice to work off. On the IRS arms the handbrake bracket on the caliper backing plate
doesn't clear the trailing arm unless you rotate the assembly slightly. Then you have to redrill the mounting holes.
I used the bearing cap to help line up and drill the holes, then test bolted it down to the swinger axle.
The next step was clearancing the caliper bracket and backing plate so they cleared the trailing arm. A little bit of tidy notching later and we have
something that looks like this.
Then everything got beadblasted, cleaned and given some paint. And then I started assembling it all onto the car. New shoes, pads, rotors and
calipers.
You can see in the next 2 pictures that the stock handbrake cable was maintained. It simply hooks straight onto the Commodore setup! Got to be happy
with that. All I had to do was add the tube to the Holden bracket to act as the cable holder for the over sleeve.
And thanks to Mr Oztowdster she is now sporting spiffy new shoes too. On 16" Commodore steelies that have had the centres flipped, moved and
rewelded.
While I wasn't driving the car I also figured it would be a good chance to swap on the full weight flywheel I picked up at Warwick. I had to have the
centre drilled from 4 dowel out to 8 dowel. I weighed them both once I took my lightened one off and the new one is about 1.3kg heavier. Which equals
more grunt down low where we want it!
Bolt this NASA spec tool on, torque her up and she's ready to go back in.
And in about 20 seconds we go from this.....
....to this.

And onto the front. Had to patch a little hole at the corner of the windscreen. I finally got the massive hole in the bottom of my nosecone fixed up.
Cleaned and repainted everything! Sorry there's not heaps of pictures like normal, I was actually working for a change
Coming together...
Had to fit mudflaps, yuck! Managed to get them so they don't look completely crap. I hope I don't drive over them too much.
These are the last pictures I took. Will have to get some more now she's all clean and driving again. All I did after this was refit the engine cover
and give her a thorough was inside and out.
She went through Police on Friday and is now defect free and driving again!!! HOORAY!!!!!!!
I have to say that the new brakes and freaking sweet. Stops well. I have yet to really stand on it cause I have been letting the pads bed in first.
The handbrake is amazing, I'm sure it would hold the car on any slope without a worry at all.
Now that's all sorted, where was I? Fuel tank and rack and pinion wasn't it? More soon

Tyres are 265/70/16
Which are 31s basically. Same size as what I had. 33s will come later
Wheels were modified by a bloke at the Gold Coast. I'm not sure of the business name because I had someone drop them off and pick them up for me.
They are located in the same industrial complex as Gold Coast VW in Labrador, Gold Coast.

I just noticed that I didn't mention where I go the hubs from. They are brand new blank Type 3 rear hubs. John Sherman on the Gold Coast supplied
them, he also drilled them, studded them and machined them to fit inside a Commodore rear rotor.

Your front and rear brake conversions remind me of a set I had a hand in in the 90's. Very similar to look at but we used VW 5 x 112 type 2 F & R
hubs and rotors, later T 4 rotors in the rear...can't remember the hand-brake set-up but yours looks great.

I thought I's share some pictures of the car now she's all done and washed. I think she's looking the best she has in years. I also pulled the
standard handbrake back out and put my cutting handles back in (I thought the Po Po might frown on these ) I haven't had a chance to use them yet but they seem to work really well. They lock the individual
wheels up no worries at all.
Out with this...
