Engine time is about to hit and I have some decisions to make... Its a bit of a monster based on a pentroof case, WEB 86c cam, a flanged and chev
journaled crank, 5.7 SCAT rods, 94mm P&C and some CB Wedgies... A reliable 300-350 FW HP is what Im aiming for with the GT30 turbo... Intercooling
is still to be decided on.
The single largest one has two factor to consider...
Fuel and cooling.
Since this car has no rear bodywork and is a dedicated drag car, should I step up and ditch the OEM shroud?
Obviously for safety at the staging lane and on the return road, some form of booster fan much like Ben and Mick are running on there cars will be
needed.
Its unlikely I will have much in the way of a support crew to help with that sort of thing... Always done it myself in the past, so making life simple
there is what I must put in place.
Then we have the fuel issues.... Fuel types in play are Meth (Wayne P's fav) and VP branded race fuels that I can get locally.... I havent looked
into the PowerPlus stuff yet.... I understand that Meth on a turbo car can be an issue, we getting sufficient temp into the engine.... But I don't
really know much about the other fuels, other than they are pretty much high octane PULP.
To make all this work, I'm gonna go with EFI and blow-through, as this is what I have and I'm confident I can get it to work soundly, with built in
2 step and staging options available... None of my current system off the other car (Megajolt and 2brl Holley) will be of much use with the up-spec
engine.... MS has some auto tuning options available and there is a massive boosted VW support network out there to help me dial it in.
So with these issues in mind, are there any special considerations that need to be taken when the assembly of the engine happens?.... Dave B will be
getting a large package of bits from me pretty soon, so he can waive his wizard like magic at some stuff, and then hopefully we will be assembling the
long block around xmas...
Still much to figure out, so any help, advise, finger pointing is gratefully accepted.

Sounds awesome Simon! If you go with fans like mine, you can get a 4" version that blows about 100cfm more. Only time will tell how well they work.
Hopefully I can let you know soon! What size is your holley and what are you doing with it??

MS is as good a choice as any, but autotune isn't a feature you can really use in a drag car though so don't worry about that.
Seeing as your efi you really should have a charging system, makes sense to just keep the vw setup, cooling and charging solved.

The Holley is a double barrel 500 with boost referenced mods and and Adjust-a-jet Mick...
I have the charging system sorted out Owen... I have a modern number is sitting on the bench with a mount all ready to go.... Picked it up of Reub
last year... My fear with the OEM setup is the dredded exploding fan phenomenon.... Some years ago I saw the damage that was inflicted on Keith
Hausler's old Oval, and since this is a race engine, mild as it is, the extra stuff is pretty much obsolete.... All that being said, I do have a
welded BERG offset fan on the old turbo engine.... But not running the OEM stuff has other advantages.... Gives me a heap more space to get the
'overtop' header and intake system in the car.
Decisions, decisions....

Just check with Barry Cripps about that cam.
If it is the same one he was using, throw it in the Indian Ocean!

I was not quite sure,
but by Barry's response, it was that cam number, that was killing his valve train.
Big cams are OK and make for big HP,
but really you just want something that will be soft on parts,
and realistically under 270 @ .050" as a maximum.
If it were me, I would use the V26 cam.
With that grid,
Andrew Murphy's turbo streeter made 240 at the wheels
and had not laid over by 7000. (mini wedge ports)

It's funny what you find when you go through your stash....
Dunno what I have here?.... I think the Scats are 1.25... The other roller ones are 1.4's I think... But no markings and no idea what brand they
are.... Any ideas?
The heads are straight out of the box...
Any tips on mods if needed for a boosted engine?
Gonna pull the case out tomorrow and make sure all is good there... It might need some loving before I send it over to you Dave...

Thanks Barry... Appreciate that.... And thanks again for the tips and help you have given me to date... Much like the advise I have received from
everyone here, it's extremely valuable and gratefully accepted.
I'm also wondering how I am going to break this engine in.... Was thinking of fitting the Holley up and using that... Then possibly changing over to
EFI when I install it in the car.... Many of the dudes in the US reckon the Holley is more than man enough for this engine, but I would still have to
do something about the ignition....
Also looking at possibly going with a dry sump setup like Fabo is fitting to his Sports Sedan instead of fitting the wide sump I have... More ground
clearance and better oiling does have appeal... But I don't really know enough about the dry sump thing.... More research.

Swap those springs out to cb650's Humpty...those springs that come std are shit.
Cool,my tank is here for you waiting...my setup is CB's basic dry sump pump,it has worked with no probs for years for a reputable SA boy, tarmac
rallies, hillclimbs and street on not just one of his engines..and its a basic pump,in-out,filter,tank etc,no lines everywhere and it keeps the cost
down, more $$ for engine to go zoom zoom

Yeah, run your cam in with the light outers,
then swap over to the CB650's.... or something else of good quality.
Make sure your engine builder sets up the CB650 spring travel before final assembly,
so that you can just install the 650s later- in the car- without the hassle of re-shimming.

Gday Simon.
Those roller rockers are interesting, I've seen them for V8 thumpers in that style (Magnum I think they call them?) but never for ACVW. And they're
1.4s as well? Even better!
Looks like they would be lightweight on the nose maybe too, I wonder what brand and type they are?

Cheers for the tip Dave.... I'm sure the engine builder can sort that stuff out for me.... As to the rockers... I have no clue what they are or if
they are any good.... I'm hoping someone will chime in... I have sent the pic to Rodney in the hope that he might be able to identify them.... Be
cool if I could use them.

They are old Autocraft roller tips.
Nice in theory, but they used to break
because they were only investment cast and quite thin.
Keep them as a coffee table ornament.

TBI injection... Don't think so... I reckon I'll get this thing rolling with the Holley and change over to EFI later... I have it all here
already... I can set the ECU up as an ignition only rig to get me rolling... I can build in a two step/launch control and all with it, so easy peasy..

Got some work to do on a customer car at the moment, and it's looking like the POS is going to be used in a music video soon, so trying to get to the

I'll get back to it soon.... Promise.

I had a set of those Auto Craft for a lot of years usage.
They ran good double springs, 48/40 valves, Web 86C cam and I even ran the same combination as daily driver for two years. Now never over 7500 rpm.
So no, not totally useless as see them.
Investment cast is correct and with better steel, probably a good design.

Those Auto Craft 1.4 rollers might be a bit risky for your stuff, but would be perfect for my little tractor motor!

I'm a little concerned with the lift the 86b produces and it's effect on the springs... The springs that are in the Wedgies are good to a point,
but I'm attempting to find out what their bind limit is, and whether the cam will cause issue with them.... Fortunately the 86b is no where near as
radical as the 86c!!! The rockers on the other hand seem to generate a few conflicting points of view. A local racer here in Aus suggests the
Pauter's have a short life span.... The SCAT 1.4's apparently are more stable, if a little heavier.
