Beautifully planned, prototyped and executed. I can't help think that you're still holding back, Dave; why not take the leap to full Desmodromic and
get rid of those power-robbing springs?

OK... so I'll admit I had to google Desmodromic to see if it was a real thing even, and yah - sounds pretty cool.
If you do it tho db you'd be taking "dangerous" to a whole new level !!!

Dave, as always the work is unbelievable.
But i have a question that I hope you can answer. Are you chasing your tail with your valve train changes?
I understand the need for higher pressure springs for the higher RPM's your chasing, but are you adding to much mass to the system that needs
control? could you just make the entire system lighter (valves to followers) and still get the higher RPM?
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

I was telling one of the teachers today that I want to build a beetle and he said he had a student
here at Mt Gravatt that was into Beetles and drag racing. His name was Dave Butler. I said i'd heard the name and he said he was a very clever
student......he was right.!!!!!....

Yes this valve train stuff can go either way.
Either you go even lighter in everything, or you go tougher.
With roller cams' harsh lift profiles and my lift at .800",
I chose the: "more mass for stability and rigidity" route.
Remembering that the valve, retainers and collets are all titanium, but the inlet valve is over 53mm,
it was a choice that was not made without a lot of home work.
Even with 200lb lighter springs than what I was running at Sydney,
the lighter 7075 pushrods (17mm tapered) and light rockers lost over .055" lift through flex, where as now with the chosen parts and improvements I
am much happier.
I DO have some more time planned on the mill to reduce rocker mass, but this will not be enough to reduce spring pressures much.
This is not to say somewhere down the track I may try some other things at both the track and dyno...as you would probably have guessed, me being me.

Well the rockers were completed and fitted to the engine.
I reduced the pushrod mass a little and also stepped back up to the heavier Manley Nextek springs
to help try and control the pushrod mass, plus the added mass needed to strengthen the rockers.
I ened up with an average of .800" lift, and spring pressure over the nose was about 1050lbs. (350 on the seat)
The engine sounded great, so I entered the Jamboree to test it out.
Off the trailer it went 6.86 @ 100.35mph , which considering the 33 degree temp made me happy.
Back in the pits, I did the right thing, and inspected the rocker arms.
All was well with them, but #4 had two broken outer valve springs.
