Not street legal but....
I have video which I took in sacremento of a vw boxer powered rail doing a quarter mile pass in 6.91 seconds, I was more than impressed and there were
beetles chasing his times with in 2 seconds or so. and some very quick and beefy registerd beetles however californian rego is in no way comparable to
Australian standards, if its older than 30 years you just pay your $54 + insurance and youre off.

The Drag Day will be back for the 2004 VW Nationals, at the new proper Eastern Creek Quarter Mile strip. Everyone who is a contender for the
'fastest street-registered VW' title should plan on being there. Then we can settle the issue.

just wondering if there had been any more advances or drags since the last few posts...

So, how many of the street registered cars are legally registered? I'm more interested in ones that are engineered and driven on the road than a

The rules were designed for gentlemen but when someone really wants a trophy and is pissed off about being beaten by a 1880 cc Targa car they will
make complaints and bolt number plates to their chubby chums drag car (isn't that fraud), sure it was a stripped down bug. Liable laws restrict
me from naming names

Fact, it was using street legal Yokohamas from memory.
Fact, I didnt know lexan window made that much diffrence, I have done jobbies that weigh more than a window, so i dont see what the big deal is about
them being that much of an advantage, Im pretty sure that they are legal in side and rear windows in NSW.
Below are the rules that we were asked to adopt by Gene Berg to make sure there were no more disputes.
Gene Berg Trophy Drag Race Rules
The Gene Berg Trophy is a perpetual award, presented to the driver of the FASTEST ROAD REGISTERED VW. As there may be some confusion over exactly what
is a "road registered" car, the following rules have been implemented.
1. The vehicle must be registered. That is the chassis and engine numbers must match up with the registration papers, sticker and plates. This can be
checked by the scrutineers.
2. The cooling system must be intact. The cylinder tin, fan housing and fan must be fitted, although the fan belt may be removed for a run.
3. The best time only in "racing" will be counted.
4. The vehicle must run on pump petrol, for example leaded super, or standard or hi octane unleaded. No exotic chemistry allowed.
5. Street tyres must be run. No drag slicks are allowed. Road tyres must have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread.
6. Fitting of the rear seat and rear seat belts is optional but both front seats and belts must be fitted.
7. Fibreglass mudguards, bonnets, whale tails and spoilers are allowed, but the body and doors must be factory steel.
8. No perspex windows are allowed, all windows must be glass.
9. The spare wheel must be fitted for safety reasons.
10. Exhaust design is unlimited except that it must meet the track noise requirements.
11. Vehicles for this class must be able to be driven on the street in the normal manner. If scrutineers are in any doubt, you may be required to
complete a 15 km drive.
Cant wait until we have a 1/4 mile track for next years Nationals, would like to see Adam from SA and Leigh go head to head.

Steve, I hear what you're saying, but that drag car (the Flying Flea, am I right?) was as street-legal and as worthy a winner of the "Berg
Trophy-with-no-rules" as some other vehicle(s) that ran times that day and would have been given the trophy.
What most people fail to realise or comprehend is that the Berg Trophy should carry a fair degree of prestige. No doubt that the builder of the engine
that wins the Berg Trophy gets considerable kudos, and consequently business from their efforts.
However, when the running of such an event by gentlemen is derailed by the unscrupulous and non-gentlemen in an effort to bolster their business at
the detriment of others, THAT IS FRAUD!
On the occasion that the lack-of-rules was brought to a head and the drag car won the trophy, was that the same year that the trophy was eventually
awarded to a turbo vehicle. Is this what Gene would have really wanted, knowing what Gene Berg Ent. really stood for (fastest normally aspirated
street car)?
Like others, I can't wait for next years match ups.

I dont think berg would have any problems with turbo cars winning. The trophy says fastest street registered volkswagen if I'm not mistaken. No
mention of normally aspirated.
Whatever year it was on his last visit to nambucca a whole group of hellbug related people were sitting around talking turbos, and he didnt seem to
have any objections then. Yeah it wasnt his way, but he wasnt thumbing his nose and walking off. A few times over that weekend I got the impression
that he admired what we do here in OZ given our geographic and financial exile. He certainly wasnt saying 'yeah thats fast but its turbo'.
If the trophy had to go to a berg priciple car, there would be none around to win. No VDO guages ('we dont use VDO cos they're crap' -
cant sue dead people) no oil coolers (shouldnt get hot in the first place), no compression......
What has happened in the past with the GB trophy is history. Its fixed now. Anyone looking for me at next years nationals will find me under Leighs
gearbox giving him a special clutch 'adjustment'.
