Bonnet

I only had one correct oval bonnet( different pressing ) to fit this car. The bonnet I used came of an oval I got a few years ago which had been rolled.
The bonnet has had about 15 hours work put into it so far but it should come up really nice.It had no rust but need a few dents and creases taken out.

Roof

The roof is all done.
as its a 60's beetle roof clip and the oval roof clip is a different shape it needed a lot of work at the front edge as an oval screen is lower than a 60's beetle.

Also the rear got a little lead.

It needed heaps of work but as it had no rust it was all I had to work with.

front clip

The only hit this car had was in the front passenger side.
The side of the front clip was stuffed.
I was going cut it off and weld on another, but finding another proved a lot harder than I thought.
So after lots of beating and heaps of shrinking its all back to the correct shape.
The whole tire well was taken out and fixed and then put back in during this process.

All the carpet clamps have also been removed and remade due to some rust.
I also wanted to see what it was like under the clamps.
No rust so the new ones where spot welded back on.

if possible i'd love some more info on what was needed to get the front of the ragtop clip to fit as eventually i'd love a golde oval but my chances of finding an original aren't too good.

thanks

Chances or finding a goldie oval are very small here.
But you can do what I've done here and fit an early 60's beetle roof clip.
The rag top is correct size etc for a 56-57 oval and having all round corners etc.
These are know as two fold.
A three fold which is is whats in an early 50's have round and square corners and are also bigger.

The problem with fitting a 60's clip into an oval is the fact that the oval has a lower front roof section.(smaller screen)
This was why its fully welded in.

If I was ever to fit a 60's to a 60's beetle etc I would have unrolled the gutters and fitted the whole roof etc and only welded the front pillars and rear.

The problems with welding one in is all the work afterwards. I cut the roof and made it a perfect fit before welding, that way I had no extra metal.
It was all knocked back into shape.
This is where the problems begin.
The front corners sit up to high and the front edge of the clip I had cut right back which seemed to pull down ok.
The corners where tacked in and then tapped down.
After it was all fully welded the front corners where heated and shrunk and a few hours of hammering and some lead was used. They came up really good.
There is not a huge differences in the clips but if your not aware of it you could run into problems with making it look right.
There are heaps of ways to fit roof clips but in this case
I think you do you would need to fully weld the clip as that way you know the corners will never move.:thumb

thanks for the above.

a few questions.

which way was the most amount of shaping needed? front to back (blue arrows)? or side to side (purple)? of equal on both?

i am assuming you cut the clip approx along the red line. if you were doing it again would you cut it there or cut it at the front of the roll (green), weld it from underneath and reform the reverse curve at the base of the roll with lead?
what about the corners, cut them square or follow something aproximating the black line?

was there much/any reshaping needed in the centre of the roof (yellow)?

do you know if the front plate in the sunroof will need reshaping or will the padding on the leading edge have enough give to avoid this.

thanks again and please pardon the shonky photoshop lines. i realized after i had finished that being left handed and using the mouse with my right hand = messy.

The area marked with the blue and purple was the hardest. The yellow area was fine. I cut well clear of the black line you marked as that way it was clear underneath to work on and cut all four corners round when fitting as this will make it easy to fit.
I cut the front round and the rear square.
But when trying to weld the rear corners it pulled out of shape really easy.
If you look back a few pages you'll see it all being cut and welded etc.

great work so far! Dont mean to chime in, I did the 60's ragtop clip into my '59. What bugboy said is exactly right, I cut roughly a few inches around the opening, not too far otherwise you could not get to the underside of the joint after you welded it (so you could beat it if you needed) The corners (particularly the rear corners) tended to pop outwards a bit and needed a fair bit of work to get it nice and flat. If you trudge through the archives you can find my thread "black betty". dasddubber did the same thing as well.

Have to do the battery tray , as you can see it has some fibreglass work done.
Looks neat but I prefer metal.:thumb

Two small pin holes and the old clutch cable repair trick.
No sure if I'll leave the hole and make a cap to cover or fill it in and replace cables the correct way. LOL:P

I think leaving that hole in the tunnel and making a cover for it will be good.. being able to access that area is invaluable I reckon... esp from experience...
