Hi guys, thanks again for the kind words - having a quick break after our anti-natal class tonight (first bub coming soon) and heading back to the
shed now to do some more colour sanding.....lucky I have an understanding wife!
With regards to the work and cost - I have quite a few cars lined up already however a few have had changes in plan and therefore have dropped out of
the line-up. In terms of cost I still have to nut out the details but I will be approaching it on an hourly rate basis and will work to the budget of
the customer. The finished product will obviously reflect the time I spend on the resto - obviously the better quality you want, the more time is
needed, and of course more $.
Once I get better set up I'll touch base with you guys.
PS Don't worry westi, I have a couple others lined up from down south.....but there are a few qld'ers already in the waiting list!
Stay tuned, better get back to work.
Al
PS more pics later tonight when I get back from the shed.

Matt, website will come with time - at this stage I don't even have a phone line or internet access at the shed - I've had a few kind AVD/dsk
members offer some assistance already which will be appreciated in coming months.
This afternoon (after normal work) I colour sanded the right front quarter (I've gone through this process before but briefly it involves sanding
with 1500, then 2000, then I use a Trizact 3000 grit all on the small orbit dual action palm sander....then cutting compound on compounding pad (low
speed), then swirl remover with softer polishing pad (slightly higher speed) on a variable speed sander/polisher).
Driver's door was done next, then I had to pack up to head to anti-natal class so we could learn how to pop a rug rat out!

Despite looking pretty good in the above pics some of the sanding scratches didn't buff out so I had to repeat the above processes spending more time
on each step to remove the scratches from the previous stage. So tonight after heading back to the shed the front quarter and door was redone.
The fluro light helps to show any scratches. The right rear quarter was also done tonight - when you do a black car, it has to be spot on as it shows
bloody everything! Hence why I am still up at 1.20am - if Rod chose white I would have been in bed long ago hehehe
Managed to get the left rear quarter done tonight as well before having to pull up stumps as I have to work tomorrow. Splitty is a double door panel
that I used to own and recently sold to Ben (whose notch I painted last year - it will be up for sale shortly so if interested shoot him a PM
(whereisfelicity is his username). The splitty will get some rust repair soon and then on the road ratty!
This is pre-colour sanding (off the gun) - on the last coat of clear the atomisation was poorer than the first two coats due a semi clogged filter so
there was some peel in areas - if you look at the power cords of the buffer and the rags on the milk crate in this pic and the one below you can see
why this process is worthwhile doing.
And post colour sanding:
Better get to bed - will be a late night tomorrow as well if I am any chance of getting the chop ready to give back to Pete and Rod on Wednesday
night!

I've always loved this car from I don't remember when, an can honestly say this work has taken it to a new level.
Not wanting to jump on the 'blow wind up Alan's bum' wagon, but this work is fucking awesome dude! As I've mentioned to you in the past.. love you
work.
It also confirms how much I want my oval to be black, along with the hard work required to get the results seen here.
Not that you need it mate, but good luck with your venture into providing a resto service. Can imagine there would be no shortage of people happy to
pay the price to get top quality work done by someone who truely loves their old volksies and is willing to nurture them back into better then new
condition...

I love this stuff....I live, dream and constantly think about vw's - sounds corny but is certainly true.
Early night tonight in readiness for a big finale tomorrow as Rod and Pete will be picking it up tomorrow evening. So tomorrow I need to sand and buff
the bonnet, roof, all four guards and the door tops/rear quarter tops (ie. the parts above the chrome trim line)....so lots to do but at least I have
all day to devote to it!
Got the passenger door and front quarter finished tonight:
In the previous pic you can see the lines of the spray booth panels laying on the ground have a very slight wobble in them....likewise you can see it
in the lines of the roller door in the below pic (despite photo being a bit blurry due to camera movement with no flash)....like I've said before, I
don't claim to build perfect cars (far from it), but I do enjoy building nice cars that are meant to be driven and enjoyed (and in this case one that
will have the $hit flogged out of it on the strip!).
Providing my arms don't drop off tomorrow, should have some more pics tomorrow night.

Cheers guys - looks like I will have to be a little more careful with future photos eh? hehehe, good to see I could put a smile on your missus's face
Mac!!
Bit of a mixed day today - trying to rush to get the colour sanding finished ended up with a sub standard result for the roof (and less so the
bonnet). Having not spent enough time on each step of sanding, some of the deeper sanding scratches still showed through after buffing....bugger! Bit
disappointing but it will remain as is until after the Hot Rod show and then I'll get it back to remedy the problems. I also have to do the decklid
as I ran out of time as well - almost got there!
Rod and Pete came down late this arvo and picked up the chop top so my thoughts are with them for the late nights ahead of them for reassembly....I
wish I could have done more but time just beat me in this instance.
Got the front guards done tonight (pic is a little blurry):
Rear guards didn't really need any attention at this stage as they were pretty nice off the gun. I may do them though when I redo the roof and
bonnet.
So that's it for me for now - I'm sure Pete will throw up some pics of the chop top reassembled and at the show!

Looks good Pete - great effort to get it all back together which such little time. Once again sorry I couldn't get the roof/bonnet/guards finished to
the same standard as the sides due to time constraints. I'll get them all sorted along with the decklid soon.

Now that I've copped enough flack for having my now-famous "right nut" posted on the net for all to see...back to work!
Rod wanted the decklid licence light filled so a filler piece was cut from flat steel and hammered into rough shape - it is sitting in place in this
pic before welding.
Will need a bit of filler for shaping so there was no need to grind the welds right down flush (pretty close though).
Also got the Dzus fasteners into the top of the decklid. Will need to extend the lower edge of the lid (both the radiused lower part of the decklid
itself as well as the "apron" which is attached to the lid for easy removal etc.
Hopefully more updates during the week.

Still only part time mate - I have to work until the end of June for the new owners of my old business then I'm full time after that (well maybe
after a week or two off once our new bub arrives end of June). My wife is pretty tolerant of my vw antics but I wouldn't be popular leaving her alone
for the first week after birth!
