So..... My super has finally been deemed (by a few local super/beetle drivers) unsafe to drive.

Issues that need to be solved before it can be driven -

1. Handbrake cable is broken
2. rear drums are at highest adjustment
3. there is next to no brake pedal
4. front discs squeal
5. front shocks are stuffed (can make them go to the bumpstops...)
6. steering wheel rubs
7 front wheels hit struts (potentially type 3 wheels on there...)

and thats just the brakes & suspension.

its also now having trouble going into gear right because the gearbox mounts are shot..... so its becoming goooood fun.

Basically, if you have any parts you would like to donate, or have time to lend, i would really appreciate it. Student budgets are hard... especailly when there are camps etc that you have to pay to be a volunteer on..... car always comes second.
Currently im searching for more work, trying to save and get all the bits and pieces i need, then get the brakes working and the bar lowered over a long weekend early in the year.

mustard, thatg should read, front inserts - for space filling purposes only,
oh had a thought when i was 2 streets away, check the lines going from your res down to the master, they could be kinked/blocked & not giving the master any fluid, or if you have pliers & a glass bottle somewhere you could pop them off the master to see if its blocked that way.
shoulda thought of that while i was there:lol:

The boys are right... if you can't afford to get this car on the road in the first place the ongoing costs will kill you in the end. No point having wine taste on a beer budget, it will kill you in the end. Sound like too much for you to afford right now. Better off getting something more sensible that you can afford with low running cost and low maintenance... oooh maybe a Hyundai?

Now you can understand why we not only have 2 Splitscreen kombi but also another daily driver. We do more than 100km each day too and from work up and down a mountain. It's not fair to make a VW do this, and the up keep is huge i willl tell you that. The excel uses very little fuel and it's never had a thing wrong with it, we service it ourselves. Sure, there are plenty of other cars i would prefer, but you have what you can afford. There is a point where you stop being vain, and start using your brain.

well, given that most people think hyundi's are worth something, id not get one for what i could part this car out for.
Also, this is one of the most rust free original supers (or any bug reallly) that i have seen, and parting it out would be a waste.

the main cruncher is that, even if i get another car (like a laser or something) for $1500... + insurance and rego etc thats still over $2000, and thats counting on that car being is amazing condition. Sorry, But thats stupid.

What is it with you and lunch Dave ???

Should get you a banner ad... "STIDUB - welder/fabricator/scooby nut. Will work for food. 0055 WELD ME"

Col Mustard - group stuff into what NEEDS to be done to be drivable safely and do that first, then do the other stuff as $$$ lets you.

Just checked your list...you've doubled up on a lot of things - like 2 sets of Urethane knobby bushes, 2 pair pivot bushes, 2 pair rear bump stops, 8 brake line clips... you only need 1 pair of each of them to do a car (and you probably don't need the brake line clips at all). Plus ditch the bump steer kit and center caps (falsl into shiny stuff category to me)...saved you over $100 already. Also give Mick's a try... I'd suspect they're cheaper on most of those things.

Never heard of anyone needing to replace all four tie-rod ends at the same time - are all of 'em really shot ???

too of the tie rods have busted boots, and i have no idea how long they have been like that..... I must say though, there is some serious sounds coming from the front. I will eng up gettting all the stuff from micks, it just easier to talk to some one face to face & see what your getting, rather than getting a box that has doubles or the wrong stuff...

thanks for the tips sides :)

Dave, Whats wrong with enjoying a nice lunch during a decent days work?
from looks every bit of his front end is original,(old & stuffed) other than steering dampner - it looks unusually out of place being shiny & clean

inner tie rod ends rarely wear out on supers

clunky noise would just be shotty ball joints and swaybar bushings
and possibly top strut mount bearings

So you've put up all of those nice pictures of the sparkly new stuff that you didn't quite need, but neglected to spend the money on the things you actually need to, to keep your car safe and drivable? And now you want people to throw in some cheapies to you? Maybe sell off the stuff you bought that you don't need, and put the fund back into making your car roadworthy. Sometimes in excitement our wants sometimes overtake our needs. A hard lesson to learn, but best learn it young.

Count on adding 40% more $'s for parts than you have to now. Once you start pulling stuff apart all the little bits and pieces add up.
I agree that maybe putting it into storage for a while until you are more financial is a good idea. Take the bus, train or buy a cheap scooter.

Well, thats one lesson learnt. Another is don't be a full time student and expect sympathy from people... Sadly, I got the rough end of the stick having to pay for a course (no hex and no youth allowance) that cost more in a month than i could earn - resulting in my car not feeling too great.
Iv also learnt not to trust all mechanics... because they either tell you its fine or dont worry about it..... as much as i know my MC is stuffed - causing my issues, noone appart from STIDUB has agreed with me.

Sorry to put a downer on people, but no i dont expect people to go out of their way to bail me out, but im sure there are enough people on here with stuff lying around that they will never use, that could help me out enough to drive my car again. But as I have always expected, alot of people in the vw community are nice, but dont really care about the younger generation. hence, why vws will die out faster..

It's all good though. I do appreciate many peoples help though, in particular Joel, Dave (stidub), steve carter etc. thanks :)

Chin up mate. all that study will pay off. You will have plenty of play $'s for the dub. But for now just be patient. Your dub needs some lovin, one part at a time. I think I might have a set of oem control arm bushes you can have. The press in type. If ya want em that is.

If i was closer i would help, and if i had spare parts you could use they would be yours. Im sure that you would do the same for others if they asked. Keep going, get the car drivable and then get it all done piece by piece.

Colonel, im not sure what your schedule is like with study but i think your just going to have to suck it up a little and get yourself a shift job. I'd pretty pretty sure one of the fast food retailers would hire you. Maccas is always looking for people. Any old car needs a little attention. My experience with my 69 bug was that it was reliable and kept going. Fix the issues you have and you should be somewhat right - once you get through them

Go to Maccas, apply for a job and earn a little dosh. Doesn't matter if you hate it, its work! IF you find a better job while working at Maccas, good, move on - but at least your earn some while you look.

all the best!

You need to realise that the people on here aren't bagging you out but trying to give you REALLY good advice.

Experience teaches you some really good things, people have been in your shoes, you just learn what priorities are. Guess what, i drive a Hyundai as a thrash about because it's cheap. I have my toys for the weekend although the ute is a daily also, but i've gotten those things through alot of hard work not by asking for help from others with my cars.

I'm still studying too, i do it externally around working a full time job. This means i sacrifice weekends to get it done. It's not fun, but it will be worth it in the long run. I also have a killer mortgage, so sacrifice alot of things that i would love to do or have. Same thing with your car, it will happen in the long run with alot of hard work. You just need to work out what is important right now... buy a cheap run about while you study work and save. Good things come to those who wait.

There will be plenty of time to have the things you want. I've learnt this.... Don't have wine taste on a beer budget.
