Well done Ben , very proud of you mate for the effort you put into the bug to get it prepared for Portland after the crash at Warwick..... all your
hard work and commitment is paying off . Now some wheelie bars to keep the front down .....

Thanks peoples!!!
That car is was my daily driver up until i brought a 500+hp ute to replace it just before xmas.
But it does still get alot of street use & does do several trips to melb on/off during the week.
Its weird, but I was put on the spot & was speechless during the presentations which is rare.
I know I got off on the wrong foot with Craig Huges, but I've really got to thank him for putting up with me!!!
But in all seriousness, we all wouldn't have had such a great event without him & his support.
This event has also changed my mind on the whole VW drag racing scene & I reckon I maybe abit more involved in the racing side of VW's in the
future. Especially with some further upgrades planned for the old white rusty golf.
Also got to thank Southcoast raceway & all its volunteers who put on the show & also for allowing the VW's to race & some "oiling down"
which most aircoolers do at times! haha
I was amped all weekend & had a blast. Even the red light in the final didn't upset me either! Cause the car had made 17-18 pass' throughout the
weekend, PB'd straight away over the old setup & wound up running some really good times for a true watercooled street car!
Thanks again too all involved.
Cheers
Tim.

Best ET for the weekend was
8.153@86.04mph, 1.85 60ft
Best MPH was 88mph
All in full street trim & weight. Only adjustments made throughout the weekend were playing with tyre pressures & front suspension rebound,
rear suspension compression & rear height.
Tune remained untouched.
But after the 8.15 pass, I was out voted by my mates to remove all the seats etc. to chase down the $500 put up for the first FWD into the 7's by Seb
& Courtney of Euro-Automotive.
But the car went slower!!! Go figure! haha
Car was running consistant 8.4 ET's, 1.9-2.0 60fts & 86-87mph.
Courtney was the eventual watercooled winner.
The car was also a stock Mk3 2L Auto Golf! Not the VR6 it was being called all weekend too!!!!
Oh the commentator was "Bruce Woodward"

1st gear burnouts ?

Pete , it was under my instruction that Ben did all his burnouts in 1st gear when at Portland . The clutch assembly didnt need any excessive load
placed on it (especially so far from home) and this allowed Ben the 8 passes he had on the weekend without clutch or transmission failure .
The transmission I built for him is a 002 bus unit 4.86 ring & pinion with 2.5 ratio 1st gear & 28" tyres (new very soft Hoosiers) . Along
with this a solid diff centre , chromemoly axles & 930 turbo Porsche CV joints with chromemoly race cages .
I consider this set-up to be quite strong and with the large 1st gear ( almost the size of a standard 2nd gear ) on the mainshaft very capable of
withstanding the small loads of a burnout from the water-trap .
After Ben spends a little more time in the car , he can then practice 2nd gear burnouts and get the tyres a little hotter .... but only after wheelie
bars are fitted.

Apart from the weather we had a great time and loved seeing all the interstate guys and girls make the trip down. The Portland track is one of the
best in the country and Craig and the crew do a great job, thanks Craig.

Good to see you guys racing, and flying the flag for the victorians.
Portland IS one of the best tracks around,
so fingers crossed that it will still hold a VW event next year.
Your best option would be to spring for a better quality first gear(Albins or FTC),
**but first you must make sure your clutch is not over rated.**
For an 8.0 car that is not too heavy,
I would say you could get away with a stage 1 and 4 puck,
or stage 2 and organic disc.
If you need to keep using the VW gears,
then make sure that you use the lates L-bug first and main shaft,
use 40hp needle bearings
and minimise end float to the lowest factory spec, and add oil holes to the hub to improve the oil flow.

Some pics from the weekend.
There are plenty more of all of the cars at Portland incl. the Super Street & Super Sedan cars, but can't really be stuffed uploading 200+ pics
sorry
LHR spring perch decided to pick something up in the threads & lock up severely!!! not good, so the last resort was to pull out the biggest
multi-grips I had in my toolbox!
Sometimes you just have to get it done, no matter what happens. We'd already set the other side up, so I had to even up the ride height!

Decided to grab some valve springs off the shelf this morning to compare vw to bigblock chev springs, then looked at your pic of your monster
springs & collet. then realised that I got excited at your pic that is magnified which made me originaly think that the valve springs you were
going to use were the biggest springs I had ever seen in any engine. hence my previous replys, It is a great close up pic . Just one question in
regards to the pushrods you are machining up, is there going to be enough room in the pushrod tubes for the oil to return back to the crankcase
quick enough cheers and hope you every success with this beast of a motor you are building, Frank

It is a great week end and atmosphere.
There was a remote chance i would have had my valves by now,(springs arrived today),
but valves wont leave the USA till Friday.
With no dyno time, $, or testing it looks like only Warwick this year.

Has anyone got some video footage of the aircooled catagories? We didn't get a chance to take any footage over the weekend and I'm keen to see how
Shrapnel was launching?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks again to Craig for holding such a great event and also to the South Coast Raceway for fantastic track preparation, what a weekend!

Thanks Rose just caught a glimpse in one of your videos!
We had a fantastic weekend; my wife Rachel ran her Birch Green 66 Beetle for the first time after 6 years in the shed. She clocked her fastest time
ever of 10.3 with a little 1776. She drove it from Adelaide, raced and drove home, we still can't wipe the smile off her face! Now to get the 2386
in there from Shrapnel and give Rose a run for her money!
Shrapnel ran faultlessly. My slowest time was 7.27 @ 79.65 MPH, hard on the brakes against Ben Ford in the supercharged Beetle. Quickest time was
7.064 @ 97.19 against Andrew Ermel (gringo 1). Reaction against Ermel in the last race before the final was .079. In the final I ran against Brad
Young in the Junka with a .001 reaction and a 7.128 at 95.14MPH. Luck was certainly on my side in these last two races. We had a ball!!

Congratulations David,
You really have Shrapnel hauling arse now!
Can you share some specs of the current drive train,
and what you have done with the suspension?
When the car was first featured in VW Power magazine(was that the 80's?!),
it had no wheely bars and a weird front suspension.
Based on the 7.0 and 97mph, you must have dipped into the 1.4's(or close) with the sixty?

Young in the Junka with a .001 reaction and a 7.128 at 95.14MPH. Luck was certainly on my side in these last two races. We had a ball!!

From memory Tommie "the gun" from the Coabra division in the silver 81 GTI 20v ran 8.8 at approx low 80's mph.
The only run we had against each other was in eliminations which we dialed in.
I remember the run well, cause we we're all joking around at the track & at the hollday cabin/pub& he dialed in a 8.80 with a 8.89 which was
awesome, as he didn't play around with anything on his car apart from front tyre pressures.
I dialed in a 8.25 & passed him with a 8.26. Can't remember the mph's sorry.
but I know we both ran very close to our dial in's & I had to chase him down.
That was only run we had against each other & it was also one of the best runs we both had.
Apart from my 2nd run on the Sunday of a 8.15@86mph
My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Dave,
Shrapnel was featured in the very first issue of Australian VW Power back in December 1988. The car was originally built by Mark Callus and Henry
and was painted white running a 2110. At the time the best quarter run was a 12.4 @ 100MPH. The front end was a wishbone set up and a rack and
pinion from a Honda. Nowdays there really is little left of the original except for the body and front fiberglass flip. We've cut and raised the
rear torsion housing and forks and uprated the torsion bars. The original aluminium hoop has been raplaced with a full roll cage. The front end is
now a narrowed aluminium beam from JT with oval shocks modified to give "no" resistance on lift. The rear of the car now has dual adjustable
shocks.
Engine now is a 2386 running an fk89, comp elim heads 48x37.5 titanium, dry sump set up, pauter 1.5 roller rockers and Jaycee 51.5 webers. I've run
this motor for a couple of years now in my 69 Beetle with injection both at Portland and Warwick previously. Each event it has run the cam flat so
I'm stoked that it has finally survived!!
This year Shrapnel's best 60 foot was against Ben Ford with a 1.516. On this run I was hard on the brakes so as not to break out with a time of
7.270&79MPH (the 330was 4.544). Dave do you think this could have been a 6? In hindsight I think I should have risked the break out just to see
what it could do, I could feel it was a good run!
It was great also to finally meet Mark Callus at Portland. With a bit of luck he'll dig up some info for the archives on Shrapnel!
