That would have to be the best coment you've ever made Dave, And I totaly agree with you.
I've won trophies at Valla over the last 2 events, I've evan happly handed back back trophies because people bitched unfair, Ive won trophies at the VW Nats and Iv'e also not won trophies, not once did I go to any of these events with the ambition to win anything, Its just a bonus on a good weekend.

Street Machine judges are totaly unbiast and they judge cars of all makes and models at all types of shows. Don't let politics spoil an amaizing event, enjoy it for what it is, and that is in my opinion a unique gathering.
Ask yourselves these questions, Do you go to win a trophie or to have a good time and share? If it wasn't a show as such but a gathering without prizes would you go?

I would go regardless

THE CAR HAS TO FIT THE CATEGORY.

We do a similar thing at the VW nats cause we have people who simpley dont know what to enter there car in

VW spectacular and the VW Nats have tried to get CLUB Judges but hey everyone wants to havea good time....

If yar dont like the judging dont enter the show...

sit back n have a :beer:beer:beer

It's a toughie. Peoples choice doesn't really work because people simply go for bright colours and trim. But there should be a people's choice award, separate to Best std/custom Paint, Best modded/restored Oval, Best modded/restored T3, Best Kombi etc
Ahem, I'll volunteer as a judge. I know a bit about VWs and I've been involved with street machiney style judging for a few years

I don't think they needed advise to realise that my car wasn't stock.

I'm not whinging here, I am just trying to have an open discussion to see what people think is the best method :)

I don't care if I don't win a trophy, because my car is not a show car. It gets used and used hard. I think if the car that won best offroad didn't have signs of being offroad then it shouldn't be in the class to start with.

I entered the show to put my car on display for interested people to look at, and they did, and I enjoyed talking to those people. But still, after paying $40 for show entry I expect the judges to put in some effort to look at the car.

PS - The car's that won my classes were better than my car, so I am not saying the judging didn't end up with the right result. I'm just saying if these judges cost so much money, and we could do it another way without the cost, then we should.

Bradly Bradly Bradly.

You can avoid panel damage by not driving like a retard and into a tree (can't you steer brad?) :D

The normal wear zones will wear when used. I have heaps of stone chips, dents and scratches under the car. It used to all be painted pretty once. My front end has hit so many things it barely has any paint left. The paint is slowly getting more and more lantana scratches too. :(

Maybe "hard" wasn't the best word for it, but it goes more places than most buggies and baja's. You and Daz are the only people that have recently been up a hil that I haven't, but that was because I essentially had no first gear. But I have been up that hill before anyway.

And then there was the hill at Mt mee, but no-one else was silly enough to try it either. And your car broke afterwards which is probably some sort of sign :D

Ok, here's my opinion, since my car's been mentioned...

I am very happy with coming second in my class, it WAS a stock category, and my engine isn't stock. It can't be, there's no way I can battle city traffic and freeways every day with a 1200. And I always said my car is a daily driver not a show car. So... if I can win trophies as well as have a daily driver, I'm rapt!

All Chris was saying (I think) was that the judges did seem to know what they were looking at (at least in the standard sections) cos they looked a bit horrified when they looked in my engine bay :P

Mind you - the guy who won best resto has a similar era car to mine and had a 1600 with an alternator... *shrugs* I don't know the answer. Just putting in my 2 cents.

Need to choose a different category next time maybe... best restored body maybe? was that one of them?

:) *waving and lookign forward to Valla 2004!!!*

Heres one for ya......If I enter the "component car" section of the show next year, how many VW bits have to be on the car to qualify?
My Spyder has a front beam, various switches, a couple of inner door handles, maybe still the front discs, will I still qualify?

:)OK I've sat watching this post since it atarted, even said something earlier...but you guys are worse than a bunch of CWA women at afternoon tea...

Its really very simple....You don't have to enter anything....or go to the dinner.....or the auction.....you dont even have to stay at Valla Beach Resort.....

If you do choose to stay at Valla Beach Resort...you have to pay the camping fees which apply all year round..they are not marked up for the VW Spectacular.

If you do not go to the dinner on Saturday night, then you buy your own food, prepare & cook it yourself.

If you choose not to go to the auction then you sit around the campfire drinking and chatting about VW's with you forum buddies.

If you don't enter the show'n'shine, then you park your car over on the other side of the fence and everyone can appreciate it from there.

:)

For those of you who have never organised a big event....is bloody hard work. & thanks to Donna & her family who organise it every 2 years. It the only event that gets people from just about every state of Australia attending....

You don't have to have a show car to show up & if you do have a show car & you choose to put it in the show...if you don't like the way it is scrutinized then talk to Donna at the time....don't hold on till 3 weeks after the event....

Graham & I had a blast. We could take our family & we met lots of mates from the forum that otherwise we would never get to meet. We also got to see some old friends that we haven't seen forever.....

All in all a fantastic event.....held by a fantastic person who goes out of her way every 2 years to get as many VW's in the one place as she can...without gaining much for herself....

This post is not having a go at anybody & there is no malice intended....:D

I agree too. But a forum is a place where open discussion can take place. Some of us are merely discussing the ins and outs of various methods of judging etc. You can't have a very good discussion about something without describing what you think are good and bad points of each.

The problem with a forum is you can't tell if someone is really bitching, or merely trying to have an open discussion. No matter how many times I say that the judges picked the right cars as winners, and that the cars that won were deserving winnings, there will be people out there thinking I am whinging. So be it.

I've had two points in this dicussion.
1 - we coulda acheived good show judging results for less cost with peoples choice, so why not go that way in the future.

2 - I don't think Valla will be as big if they hold it next year. 20 or so forum people saying "yeah I will go" does not equal a bit valla turn out. Look at the AVD BBQ, we were a minority at Valla. The prob would be getting the people that don't access AVD or clubs to even know that it's on.

Despite these points, I love Valla and would be happy to go again. :thumb

PS - I didn't say anything to Donna about the judging, because I thought the right cars won and really didn't have a problem. I only mentioned my experience because we are having a discussion

PPS - I didn't say whether any comments were or were not directed at me, so no-one get offended by anything

PPPS - have I put enough disclaimers on this post to prevent people from starting rumours about me? Probably not. You shoulda heard the weird rumours I heard when I was at Valla. :puke

Sometimes I think I shouldn't post in the first place :D

I know Wes, I wasn't having a go at you.....promise:D

I just think that if your going to Valla then your going to Valla.....with or without the show it's still a good event....& lets face it by the time the show'n'shine comes around everybody has walked around the grounds & seen all the cars anyway.....

I just think that everyone should enjoy the event for whatever reasons they want to....

Thats all...:bounce

I dont see any reason why it wouldnt be as big or bigger next year. Its a special occasion, 20years, doesnt come around every day. And I think all the positives about Valla expressed on this forum will sway a lot of the uncommited ones. Valla's not like any other car show for mine. Way less about the cars and more about socialising and relaxing compared to other shows. Probably because you are staying away from home for a couple of days.
Thook is right about the activities, doesnt matter if you do them or not, just so long as you support the event.
Pete , right on the money as always mate. :thumb
So despite the fairly hellish drive there and back from Melbourne, I will be there in 04 with out fail. Hopefully with a larger Vic contingent.
Oh a regarding the AVDS barbie, I'm sure there were more than a few who didntl come because they didnt know any one other than on the forum. I think what the more active members of the forum (me included) need to do next time is seek these ones out and drag them along.
Bring it on :thumb:)

No negative comments please - Forum Ahead

We are just discussing Valla & its good & Bad points Dave.... Its no good saying if You don't like it - don't come...
You are talking to - dyed in the wool -VOLKSWAGEN Lovers on this forum so don't try to stop discussions by saying
don't do this etc... if You don't like it...
We will ALL be at Valla the next time and the next etc...
if its on every year or every two years.

I believe that this year was better than the last, in the Nambucca street Parade,
many more VWs than last time, and probably more VWS parked around Valla Park itself than last time, but the Parts retailers were down and the Swap Meet varies each time... but regardless whether there is a Show & shine or not, I'll still go... Rain, Hail or shine... I'll go...
$2 or $22 to get in , I'll still go...
(and I have sorted that out with Donna.)
I like the discussions about the VW Judges, and I wouldn't mind being a judge, even though You miss out on a lot of things. I have been asked before to be a Judge at the Nationals, many years ago, but declined, as I was looking and buying, and You can't do both.
Another thing I have thought about, is the number of judges... naturally the more judges there are, the better the judging will be. IMHO...

9 VWs from the Upper Hunter Area in NSW

Nambucca - Valla 2004
there should be about 9 air cooled VWs from the Upper Hunter area next year, at Nambucca Valla Park, with 16 VW enthusiasts in the Cars. I met one of the semi-locals 250kms from home at a Maccas... He had tricked Me and had driven a type 3 instead of the beetle He normally drives... there were also two other locals in beetles there.....

Now turning our attention to Jays Beetle,
if the other car ?? also had an alternator & 1600 engine.... why didn't She win....??
maybe because Her engine was dirty??
Anyway if the entry fee is only $10 next time, she can enter more than one class.. maybe "daily driver"....
