Doesn't seem to have anywhere for your filters to fit, or do you think just the box will be good enough to keep the stones at bay ???

Also curious on the turbulence side of things... what would be the impact of running ducting directly from the top of the stack up to the side windows like have seen on some cars ???

I would still like to fit some filters soon Dave,
but being that this version will likely be changed for the new manifolds,
I will leave them out for now.

Yes, side and rear windows is a good option for the intake,
but the pipe should never be near the ram tube.
Perhaps individual ones, but that gets complicated with the close proximity of each bell.

I found a few videos on You Tube of some very old lectures :dork: about air intake boxes,
and without tested dividers built in, some air went in, and some actually was drawn OUT:crazy: of the intake runner.

Tried the dyno with the air box, but had some problems with the dyno surging.
Started trying to jump off the rollers at 7000, so aborted at 240hp.
Looked to be following the previous curves, both power and mixture.

At Leon's "Dino Day" with the engine cold and no air box it went 252hp, so the engine is fine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxIBafgJlTU

I had not had a drive for over 3 months, so took it up for a cold night test and tune.
Had some dramas with the clutch setting, (fingers hit the disc)
and once sorted the throttle linkage broke off near the end of the last run!

The whole purpose of the T&T is to get ME and the car ready for race day,
so best these things occur NOW rather than 1000km away!

Maintenance looks good,
and I have double checked and surfaced the clutch and FW,
and sorted out the throttle linkage.
Even the old loose blower barrels have begun to seal up!(leak down AOK).

Jury is still out on the air box,
so may leave it off for Sydney, it certainly runs a whole lot richer with it ON there.
Whether this is because it is restrictive,
or perhaps it is just containing the stand-off as intended, who knows,
but without some form of ducting, it is not worth the reduced access for tuning and maintenance.

Here is a crap run from Wednesday night,(missed 2nd gear bad!) :

Thought I would update my progress...or lack of progress!

After a thorough think about some oil surge and blow by issues,
I decided to freshen the engine
by adapting my good barrels to this case,
reducing the oil clearances on the crank,
and sleeving the lifter bores.

This enabled me to go back to the ACE 20 oil,
which has helped the oil return to the sump faster (still more to do though if you watch the oil light in the videos)
and also, the ACE20 will flow through the bearings better than the ACE50, now that I have reduced the oil clearance.
Luckily with the journals I chose on this crank shaft, you can purchase bearings that are .001" tighter.

The reason for sleeving the lifter bores was,
at at full lift, the oil slot in the case was becoming uncovered as the lifter went past.
By sleeving with aluminium-bronze, I was able to change oil supply to a hole instead of a slot, which is never uncovered,
and also improve the clearance and wear-ability.

This slot is for the roll pin, that later will stop the roller lifter turning:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n216/dangerous_05/IMG_7809_zpsb109c1e2.jpg

The oil hole is the small one at the top.
Formerly it was a slot across the top like the one on the side (for the roll pin).

The air box arrangement was not practical,
so I removed as much of the top and sides as I could,
and changed the wing to stop the breeze effecting the tune.

After running at the Jamboree(23rd year!),
I seem to be back on a path that is responding to my changes.

Missed the first two qualifiers with a faulty crank trigger,
so plugged the distributor sensor back in, and qualified with a 10.95 @ 124.6mph.

In the first round I guessed a dial in at 10.90,
and leaned off the high speed mixtures.(above 7000).
This was a backward step because it slowed to a 10.98 @ 123.02,
but due to the .005 reaction time I was able to take the win.

Thanks to Frosty for the use and install of these videos from his GoPro camera!

After a healthy discussion amongst the other VW guys like Macca, Pete, Stanley, Ben, Rod R and Frosty,
I decided to richen up the main pill,(since the sixty foot times were still a little slow at 1.52),
and put the high speed mixture back 'as was'.
This was a huge improvement to the half track marker (6.89 @ 100.4mph),
and I broke out with a 10.81 @ 124.24.

Based on the MPH, and comparing it to the previous day's 124.6, it is probably now a tad rich above 7000.
But it is a good base line for the next time I run.

And no, I do not back off for the win, even when I know it is in the bag.
That is just a waste of good data.

Still mowing through a heap of work jobs,
and as soon as my credentials return from ANDRA,
will be going for another test and tune to sort out the last half of the 1/4 mile.

Yes, manifolds are next cab off the rank!

Those manifolds already have a pretty big hole.

Perhaps you should try the "Biodynamic" approach Dave?

Cut the ends off 4 bloody great bull horns and glue them to the heads! I rekn the taper would work too!
Of course, whether you fill them full of poop and bury the things at full moon to help even more is up to you man........
