a couple of Q's

does street registered vw mean vw powered or any type of motor?

plus any idea what sort of time would be needed to be in the running with a fair chance? (not that my car will even be close to finished by then + it will never be that fast anyway)
thanks.

Clutch adjustment! Man I don't need a clutch adjustment I need a 4th gear. Chris do you know anyone with a 1.04 sitting around idle? A 4th gear, a trip to see Shimo and I'm back on the road again! My motors been finished for weeks sitting on the stand ready to go.

I guess not everyone here digs turbo's huh!

All right,

I've been abstaining from commenting on this thread for a while (almost since I started it actually), because everyone seems to have gotten wound up in this Gene Berg trophy business.

I meant all of australia - not just those who can get to the easternstates shows.

I meant quarter mile times (sorry to be picky, but it is the standard most people go by).

I meant any engine, not only VW.

By my rules, any VW bodied car (which rules out Manxs, buggies and kit cars) with legal licence plates on it would qualify.

But anyways - I was only curious :) I had no idea about the gene berg trophy. I still dont know what show the races are / were held at !!

P.S - I dig turbos too !!!

If you want to win the "Gene Berg" trophy, play by the rules Steve has posted.
If you think otherwise, donate a new trophy and make a new award.!
You need to have a written criteria for your new "category"and name it what you want. e.g "normally aspirated trophy"," turbo trophy", "Non Vw powered trophy"

Water under the bridge and we all need to move on :thumb ,be part of the solution not part of the problem.

leigh I'm thinking of adjusting your clutch up so bloody tight its engaged foot on or off the pedal. Lets see how fast you go with the clutch is slipping like crazy.

The people who dont like turbo's just need to be prepared to wave as drive past.

Yeah it wasnt his way, but he wasnt thumbing his nose and walking off. A few times over that weekend I got the impression that he admired what we do here in OZ given our geographic and financial exile. He certainly wasnt saying 'yeah thats fast but its turbo'.

Steve, I hear what you're saying, but that drag car (the Flying Flea, am I right?) was as street-legal and as worthy a winner of the "Berg Trophy-with-no-rules" as some other vehicle(s) that ran times that day and would have been given the trophy.

What most people fail to realise or comprehend is that the Berg Trophy should carry a fair degree of prestige. No doubt that the builder of the engine that wins the Berg Trophy gets considerable kudos, and consequently business from their efforts.

However, when the running of such an event by gentlemen is derailed by the unscrupulous and non-gentlemen in an effort to bolster their business at the detriment of others, THAT IS FRAUD!

On the occasion that the lack-of-rules was brought to a head and the drag car won the trophy, was that the same year that the trophy was eventually awarded to a turbo vehicle. Is this what Gene would have really wanted, knowing what Gene Berg Ent. really stood for (fastest normally aspirated street car)?

Like others, I can't wait for next years match ups.

56astro

You didnt hear what I said, in my opinion the car that did win was legally registered and was in the spirit of a street car, in fact it was setup in much the same way as Ben Duries cars are, no back seat etc. The car in question was not turboed. Funny the guy doing all the jumping up and down and fitting plates to a drag car owned a VW business. Even funnier, the last few winners dont even have a VW business, Leigh is a hydrogapher, the VW business people must not have any interest in this trophy???

The 2 turbo cars that have won the trophy in the past, Keith & Leighs cars most certainly comply to the rules, Keiths car was his only car so it was very street, Leighs car is not driven as much, he has 2 other cars, but Leigh would have no problems driving his bug on any made road. It is also 100% street legal.

We cant ask Gene what he thinks, but I know that he acknowldged that the turbo guys in oz were and still are streets ahead of what they are doing in the states.

As has already been said its water under the bridge, but I didnt bring it up.

My comment was said simply due to my experience with the eastern creek off street drags, with so many alleged street cars being full house drag cars with plates from another vehicle bolted on. Some of the rotary guys are notorious for this.

At the off streets, "scrutineering" wasnt much more than a check on seatbelts and helmets, not once was I asked for my rego papers, engineers report or a comparison between these and the VIN number on the car.

street cars my arse.

HOWEVER this is not a stab at the Berg trophy, as I have never attended, either as a competitor or spectator. Which is why I asked.

It seems to me that a fair proportion of the VW community is so insulated they cant see past their own layer of bubble-wrap. Get over it you lot, it's seriously not that importaint!!

Still the fastest...Officially

Still the fastest...Officially.

Leigh has only run the 1/8th as far as I know. But he has achieved 8.8 or something. That's gotta be a high 11 or low 12 second 1/4 at least.
Keith has run the 1/4 at Easter Creek years ago and I think he did something like a 12.1 on radials & spinning the wheels the whole way. I know Keiths car was a driver (remember that day we went for a blast around Coogee Keith?).

There are those guys in Melbourne (VOLLKOMMEN ART or something!) that have done 10's or 11's but these cars aren't very streetable. VERY old school (KAWELL drag style) turbo set-ups. Though they are registered...supposedly. Some one in Vic get off their lazy arse & find out huh! As for here in Perth...Will I think I'm it (And thats not much!) I have a best of 14.8 (1/4) air cooled & my brother has a 13 flat ( RS Liberty powered Notch). We do have 10 second drag bug that is not to far off road worthy...Just kidding! There must be some others over here, I just haven't seen or heard of'em!

G'Day Humpty,

Good to hear from you again, this has to be the best catching up with people over the otherside of the country. Thanks for the offer, but I think a straight cut 4th gear would drive me nutty on the street. If I can't hear my stereo over the motor I get cut! I'll give the manufacturers another ring today, I'm sure they are doing their best.

Can't wait to fire up this combo though!

Cheers Leigh:bounce:bounce:bounce

the fastes that I know of out here in the atates is Buddy Hales oval rag. It ran 11.90's in the quarter. He competed in the Renn Kafer Cup. It was registered, insured, and was a full show car. Interior, body, chassis, was all show car. It was on flat 4 brm's. The only thing was that it was on T bars instead of bumpers. It was one bad ass car.

Fastest Street Reg.

I found the site while surfing. There seems to be a nerve hit with this forum.
The fastest street reg VW?
If there is a problem with how legal a car was or wasn't it can only come back to the scrutineer and not any entrant. as the organisers are the only ones you can blame for this situation.
As I can see it most of the cars are NOT STREET LEGAL. With the inconsistant State regs. etc. There can never be a level playing field for such a vague title.
Maybe FASTEST STREETABLE VW. Have fun with this.

Reading the rules is Okay. From what I've seen on these pages it appears
1/ Nobody has been checking the vehicles,
2/ Nobody has been running to a common set of rules,
3/ From my memory the rules Steve put up were close to the original intent of G.B.
4/ At some stage some of the people who seem to be finger pointing need to realise their own cars are most likely not "Street Legal" even if they are registered.

So maybe we should consider who really is at fault..... The entrant or the people who let this happen....... How long ago now??????????????:

Leigh has his name on it, Leighs car is OK. The only thing that is up for debate is that not every car in Australia has competed for it. I'm sure Dave will send an entry form to those people if they ask nicely! Leigh is a big boy (so B tells me) I'm sure he wont cry if he gets second.
