ENGINE REASSEMBLED TONIGHT
following are some pics of the engine . first pic shows the cylinder heads fitted back onto the 2.9 litre engine and it is clearly visible that the
head nuts now hold down the heads correctly after the bosses have been machined down to suit .

after fitting the cylinder heads and barrels with the new decompression shims , I have now found that the pushrods that were being used in the engine
previously are now too short . pictured is a new set of uncut chromemoly pushrods . after the photo was taken I then cut the pushrods to the correct
length and fitted the end tips supplied in the kit . The rockers were then fitted and the tappets adjusted .

wow wow wow...
Seeing the primered Oval shell reminded me of the build of my own Oval - and that almost overwhelming feeling of anticipation and satisfaction -15
years ago. Jeez, it seems like last month, not a decade and half ago. I'm still working on my car when time allows :thumb and it's getting a fresh
engine, big brakes are being worked on and possobly a new two-tone RestoCal paint job soon!
You have already done a stunning job - love the colour. Red ones go faster!

before making comments 56astro maybe you should do your homework on the subject . THE GENE BERG TROPHY is a category for the FASTEST STREET REGERISTED
VW . The car must be RTA REGERISTED with the ENGINE & CHASSIS NUMBERS MATCHING THE REGO PAPERWORK . The COOLING SYSTEM must be intact . The engine
must run on PUMP PETROL ONLY . Only STREET TYRES to be used . The BODY & DOORS MUST BE STEEL . GLASS must be fitted , no perspex . SPARE WHEEL
must be fitted . The car must be able to be DRIVEN @ 110KPH FOR 15 MINS .
I have highlighted the areas where the oval will comply , just incase you get confussed !!
|
Wayne,
I don't doubt the fact that you could turn up to a race meeting and bluff the organisers into thinking that it is (properly) "street registered".
Hell, you'd have the papers to prove it.
The problem is, as you stated in one of your previous posts, that somebody is going to "sign off" that the engine is a 1.7 kombi engine, which you
have turboed. Technically you could take it out to 1.950.
But 2900, OMG!
There is a big risk going to be taken by someone, either you (for providing false info to your engineer) or your engineer (for approving something he
knew was false).
If your vehicle is involved in a fatal accident (heaven forbid, and not necessarily the car at fault) and the car gets a going over as part of the
coronial enquiry, and it is discovered that the engine is not a 1.7L kombi engine but instead a 2.9L beast of a thing, who will they come looking for
to sue the ar5e off? Will it be determined that the vehicle should never have been registered in the 1st place? OFF COURSE!
And that was the point to my original post. The intent of the Gene Berg trophy is to reward the quickest street car over the 1/4 mile. If you have to
cheat the system to do it, then .....
There is no doubt though, that it's going to be an awesome street car!
|
This above is all true,
if you lie about engine size to the RTA etc/ Engineering signitory well you could be in 4 a little more attention than what you are seeking.
As 4 the Berg trophy well if you have to cheat to win is it really worth it ?

after fitting the engine tonight , I then decided to work on the gearshift . After completely assembling the gearshift and adjusting it , I couldn't
get gears properly . So I dissassembled the entire gearshift and when I removed the gearshift rod from the oval , I found it was bent . I straightened
the rod and went to fit a new gear-tunnel bush only to find the hole in the bracket that holds the bush is extremely flogged out . So tomorrows job is
to cut the top of the tunnel and replace the bracket . here is a pic of the Gene Berg R/H drive shifter and the nolathane gearshift coupling assembly
.

After each run on the 1/4 mile some of the coolant will be dumped & a quantity of ice added to keep the intercooler temp. down.

Hi Wayne,
Are you going to have a ice bucket somewhere for the intercooler?
Looking good,

After each run on the 1/4 mile some of the coolant will be dumped & a quantity of ice added to keep the intercooler temp. down.

But wow, what a car! Very impressive
