That might have been the Chop top that Laurie Gooley owned. The car Reuben in NT now owns. Not 100% sure but that was around about that time.

Graham [IIcab] no it was never actually regoed. Driven around at various times around 91 , 92, then I got it,and she hung around the shop for a few years, until she went together as Dave said racing '94-'97

Stephen, of coarse I have more photos and stuff, just takes to long for me to convert to digital:dork:

Officially its GMH Flat Black, but when you do a quality panel prep, it comes out more semi gloss.
We used to clean it with normal car wash but with some kero added to keep the finish consistent[oily fingures and the like show up terribly]

Bit more work on decklid today - bottom edge which was previously cut to clear header was lopped off:
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/May21_decklid3.jpg

Then a donor decklid bottom was chopped and tacked in place (incidentally this isection is from the original decklid of the car when in Matt's possession [so I'm told])...so at least part of it will stay with the chop top!
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/May21_decklid4.jpg

Tacked in place with a couple pie cuts to try and get the shape close (as the profile is different for the w-decklid on there currently and the later donor lid). Bit more grinding to go then some filler to smooth it all out. When the chop top comes back to my shop I'll finish the bottom edge of the apron....then it will be painted.

The chop top is back in the shop so I can finalise colour sanding and finish the decklid. Started on the roof today:

Hmmmm....whose type IV powered, porsche brake equipped weapon of a beetle could that be in the reflection of Rod's door?

You'll have to forgive the untidiness of the shed over the next month or two whilst I get the booth cleaned, painted, seals replaced etc etc etc

Nah Nick - I'll be happy with a little sticker in the back window - I only did the paint - all the hard work was done by others!

I'm sure I'll have a chance to plaster my own drag car with my business name at some stage :)

Roof is all done.

Front guards recut and buffed.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/May29_rebuff4.jpg

Masking tape is to A) protect edges, and B) stop compound from getting into the edges of guard beading, window rubbers etc etc!

More work on the weekend coming...should have it all done and dusted by Wintersun next weekend (chop top will be on display at the classic car auction on sunday [not for sale of course!]).

VW Beetle... one of the hardest cars to buff. Lots of flowing curves all leading into each other. Buff burns are easy to come by if you're not carefull.

I learnt to buff using a machine on a beetle. Uncle had an old one sitting there for parts so i asked if I could learn on it. got the hang of it with only a few buff burns to start with. Best thing about practising on an old parts wreck cause it didn't matter about the damage but learned all the lessons I needed to to master the use of a buff.

Back onto the decklid tonight - first trial fit before cutting out templates for the filler piece...
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun2_rear_apron1.jpg

Bottom edge was left long so I could put a gentle fold in it (tomorrow night hopefully) - will have a cut out in the centre for the header flange.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun2_rear_apron2.sized.jpg

Was clamped from the inside, plug welded to decklid and but welded elsewhere (just spot welded in pics - will finish welding tomorrow night)
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun2_rear_apron3.jpg

Ran out of time tonight - will hopefully have it done tomorrow night. Rod and Pete will come down to fab up the dzus fastener brackets on the guards....by the way Pete, I decided it was much quicker to work with what was there rather than fabbing up a whole new rear apron skin. We can fill the dzus holes if they have to be moved around.

More pics for you Brennden :)

Last night I hand formed (ie beat it to shape) the lower edge of the apron - much neater than a sharp cut edge (but about 5 hours slower though)...hehehe

http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun4_rear_apron5.jpg

The header flange fits nicely in the cutout (with radiused edge as well)....heaps of room for a bigger header if a larger engine ever finds it way into the chop top!
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun4_rear_apron6.jpg

Some filler work to fine tune the shape - a lot of this will be sanded off tomorrow before primer/paint.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun4_rear_apron7.jpg

Rod and Pete were at the workshop today to finalise the dzus fasteners on the lower edges of the apron including brackets on the guards to hold it all in place.

Since I ran out of time to colour sand the rear guards before the hot rod show, I got started on them tonight - will hopefully buff it all back to a glossy finish tomorrow.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun4_rear_guard_sanded.sized.jpg

DAS Resto Haus will be officially open for business in July (up until then I am still only there part time) - you can see I still have a fair bit to set up which is hard with limited time and dwindling funds! It will all come together with time.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun4_shed_shot.sized.jpg

Since my T4 decided to let me down on the way to work monday morning (in the rain of course), the oval is back to daily driver status (yes it marks its spot wherever it goes!)....should be ready and raring for DYNOMANIA!!!

Got the rear guards colour sanded today to match the rest of the car...tried to stay out of the pics but these curvy guards are hard to stay out of the reflection;
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun5_rear_guard1.sized.jpg

Made sure there were no random 'nut' shots today ;)
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun5_rear_guard2.sized.jpg

Was hoping to have the decklid in paint by the end of today but had a set back. Despite prepping the existing black paint and laying down a sealer it reacted badly (no idea what paint was on there Pete/Rod - it was terrible to sand as it was so soft and went gummy with solvent....had to use the angle grinder with wire brush wheel to remove all the paint as it clogged everything else I tried). Anyway, the filler worked areas were primed as per this pic, then minor spots filled after taking it back to metal....and after this pic it was reprimed. hopefully after work tomorrow night I should get it into paint after giving it a quick light sand.
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/album438/Jun5_decklid6.jpg

forgot to take a pic of it fully primed.

Al
