Well here the result of the T&T just before Christmas.
Didn't find any shiny bits in the oil which was a good sign.
Pulled the heads off and they all looked good.

But then looked in number 1 and this is what I found.
Thought this was going to be it until I pulled the barrels from 3 and 4.
These were dodgy 2nd hand pistons fitted with new rings and mated to new barrels.
This happened after 28 runs and 12months of street driving.
I'll see whats waiting for me inside.

Ah well Stanley, bit worse than a rocker cover gasket, but could be worse.
Tough 1600 to run a 13.5 on three cylinders.

Been thinking of a Holley on and off for a while. The SU has been good in that it was easy to mount and they are simple. Down side is they are slow to respond and somewhat frustrating to tune. If I could get a holley manifold that didn't look like a piece of modern art I would certainly consider it. If you know where I can get a manifold westi let me know.
I don't like to give up on things to easily unless i'm really flogging a dead horse. I think 12's are a cert with this setup with some more tinkering. So for now i'll atleast stick with the 1641. 100ci has a nice ring to it.

any input welcome

Just a quick update now my telephone line has been fixed.
Pulled down the rest of the engine which is all sweet. Found the missing pieces of piston skirt which all fitted neatly in the slots in the screen.
All bearings and journals are good. Amazing what a difference an oil filter makes.
Still scratching my head as to why three of the top skirts broke off.
Trailer is also painted and wired ready for rego Friday.

The reduced area between the floorpan and the road surface actually causes a slight vacuum (negative pressure) this in turn sucks the car to the road surface causing drag. You see I have tried it all before, No matter what I do I still can not beat the factory settings and specs.

Fair point Robo but knowing a little bit about aerodynamics there's only one response to your arguement.

3 inch roof chop.......

Roof chop
Well ya see Volkswagen thought that the best way to get the car to slice through the wind was to make the body shape similar to an areoplane wing something your very familiar with. You see the lift the factory design/roof height provides reduces the rolling weight/resistance that the engine has to overcome, witch in turn allows you to go faster. If you chop the roof 3 inches you loose this advantage. The factory once again comes out on top! I think we better have a coffee together at the pie shop and I can impart some more factory wisdom on you, all it will cost you is a chocky donut!
Almost forgot to answer Brenndan!
Well when I was born the speed limit in the city was 35mph! so when I crank up the 56 (oval) to 65 thats effectively almost double the limit. To get the same thrill today you would have to beat 220kmh! So I recon Im a bit of a speed deamon and have done my time as a delinquent speed freak juvinile and lived to tell the tale. My life now is devoted to keeping the youngsters of today alive!

I never knew a bulbous shape could aerodynamic!
Maybe if we do this to our VW's they would go even faster?
