No Beam Extension! it changes it too much and then you need another modification plate. This project was started so that anyone can build a volksrod
for the road. I will be documenting everything, it will be done the easiest way with minimal problems to get it registered. The engineer is a client
of mine and doesn't do public certification ( I'm an exception).Sorry.

So what if you wanted to do a beam extension anyway, comply and get the mod plate, do you know or can you find out whats involved?

Not sure what certification you need to do to extend the beam? It does change the Ackerman angle (steering Geometry) and can cause difficult steering
and wearing your tyres and suspension out.

I’m not sure that it does harm Ackerman. In fact most of the articles I have read indicate that VW beetles have poor Ackerman anyway and the beam
extender actually improves it. Most of the issue is at very slow speed like when doing a u turn at full lock. There is Ackerman angle and Ackerman
steering and for small steering angles, Ackerman is minimal. I think more tyre and suspension wear comes from driving habit and poor wheel alignment
rather than differences in Ackerman.

Yes, so did I until I read up about "Ackerman Principle". Turns out there are quite a lot of manufactures that paid little attention to it at all.
If you look at certain models within car brands, you find they all use the same suspension components across models. Some models have longer wheelbase
(eg: Holden wagons/statesman's longer than sedans) without any correction of Ackerman. Some vehicle designs had bad Ackerman and required after

I think Ackerman is used by authorities to discourage or stop people from doing modifications because it is such a confusing principle. They too think
the manufactures always get it right, but that's far from true. They don't want to accept that some after market modification actually improve a

Stretched vehicles all have absolutely killed their Ackerman but there are plenty of those on the road.
Using the standard VW front end and simply moving it forward via a beam extension does change "Ackerman" but not the" Ackerman angle". This slight
change in Ackerman can be adjusted in toe when doing a wheel alignment.
Ackerman is also affected by, tyre slip angle which varies with speed, Lateral Force, tyre stiffness, tyre load, toe angles, camber, caster, lowering,
rake, roll centre, wheel backspace and everything else you can think of that contributes to steering geometry.
So in real terms for example, changing from drums to disc's has 100 fold better safety improvement than worrying about slight changes in Ackerman
with a beam extension.
This is why I find it hard to believe there is so many certifiers that have issues with beam extensions with regard to this.
More of a concern would be a beam extension without a brace back to the firewall.
This is longer but stronger

Two month's pasted already! Time fly's! Back on the case again.
- Roll bar getting made at the moment.
- Door gussets getting rolled, should have them back soon.
- Seats fitted.
- Seat upholstery finished and ready to be fitted. (post pictures soon).
- Need some crazy bugger to test drive her!!

I've seen examples online of people using a sandblaster to cut the tempered safety glass down. Has to be cut on both sides. You might try looking at
some of the hotrodder websites for more info.

Nice work! This is looking pretty good. That beam extension would really help the proportions though...
Are you considering making a tonneau to cover up all of the seats when not in use? I think the car is crying out for one. Not only would it look
awesome when driving alone, but it would be really handy if you ever needed to leave the car in the rain.

I wanted to build a Hotrod with a budget of $3000. So far so good! I will be making a picture book of how it is done, so that anyone can build one
themselves. Keep posted.
P.S The build is on hold at the moment as I am waiting for other people to Make some parts. Namely the roll bar and door gussets, as I don't have a
pipe bender on rolling machine.

I love your build, and your aim for a under $3K Budget. I'd interested in your book (if nothing else to se the secret mounting). for me it is the first "Rod" and I dont have the funds for the
enevatable mistakes on a big budget build. |
