I saw this car before when the guy from Albany was selling it. He's a vw collector and has lots of cars and parts so it must be the ultimate bitsa?

Lets call it a very very late model 69.

Recently acquired this 1969 Type 3 Notch, hasn’t been on the road since 1978, had been sitting in a shed in Nelson, New Zealand until a few years ago.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4789290381_3eca3145a0.jpg

History is as follows:

Notch is of Australia origin and was imported into New Zealand in 1976, it is registered as a 69 here in NZ and log book also shows reg in Perth as a 69, but chassis number indicates 68. - 318200052

It has the 4 stud wheels, 12volt and disc brakes up front, bullet style indictors, but still has swing axle rear and the early bumpers.

Also the fuel filler is the very early edition with no interior release, manually opened with a finger pull.

Have been wondering why it seems to be a mix of parts but the posts in this tread seem to explain the oddities of my one????

That's fantastic, on the road for 10 years and then in storage for 32 years. Love to see more pics of the interior.

I don't think it is a mix of parts, it's just how things were at the time they were built/assembled. My car (in Perth) is just 19 cars newer than yours 318 200071 and has exatly the same components.

Zimad that is a good looking car. These German 68 spec Australian 69 model cars must of been made as a batch. I don't how many was in a CKD batch of cars, does any one know? Squarebacks and notchbacks I have seen no one has come up with a fasty yet but there could be some?. Does your car have heated seats? or is cruiser's car unique in that regard?

Cheers, I will pop up some pics of the interior in the next few days, it has ember red interior, which is in pretty good nick, only drives door needs a bit of work.

The carpets have all been thrown out, as they were rotten, as you can see I have had to replace the rear left guard and the boot, as part of the rear of the car had been hanging out of the shed it was parked up in for the 30 or so years, and they had got pretty rusty.

Don't think it has heated seats, will have to check, would be cool if it did!!

The only one of this spec I've seen Richie was at Pick and Paymore at Blacktown a couple of years back. It had been burnt a bit from memory but was sold off as a whole car rather than being parted out. Wonder what happened to it?? Anyone from Sydney area know?

I always thought the fastbacks with TS badges on them were locally made where the German ones has TL badges..
and the parking lights....

German ones had the bendy glass side windows.....??

Still waiting to see pics or further info on the mythical heated seats.
I can't find any referrence to them in any of my literature, parts books etc. Pics would help.

Also for those interested in mythical things I had some one tell me at Valla that they seen an Azure interior notch with a sunroof in Melbourne a few year back. How about that!

They don't exist. I have EVERY Type 3 M-code from 61 to the end of production, not to mention all the factory manuals and parts lists. The only thing that comes close in terms of heating is a heated back window and the eberspacher booster heater with timer clock..

The azure interior doesn't exist either...They are FOS. The pic getting around was photo shopped. Again, the only thing that came close was the 1961/62 Type 3 Ghia with the special order blue interior(this is where all the blue knobs and trim pieces came from) and the 66 model blue interior for which only the carpet and seat covers were blue, all other trim fittings were standard type 3, including the black dash, Only dash colours offered for the type 3 and type 3 ghia were black, brown and red(with the colours being 1966 only).

I have found that the passenger can also have some throttle control as if you press on the foot plate hard enough it flexes and depresses the throttle where it comes through the tunnel.

Good for playing tricks on your freind/driver so they think somethings up with the motor??

Also the passenger can be the seat heater. Just get them to sit in the drivers seat for half an hour before you want to go anywhere on a cold night.

I think these wheels will fit a wide 5 type3 and not rub the guards. 6 inch wide and 43mm offset may come close to the bump stop on the rear???

How many panels still exist if there were 516 units produced. ?
Makes them rarer than the Country Buggy where 878 units were produced for the Australian market.

About 20 Type 3 panel vans are known WORLDWIDE, with several of them being Australian. They were also built in Emden.

Rare, yes, but there are definately more than 20 left in the world  I know of about 5 panels off the top of my head in QLD alone. Quite a few in Europe too. Plenty out there waiting to be found.
