David
It was great to watch Schrapnel in action. I too wanted to see what time you were capable of achieving. It sure is quick. When do you think your next outing will be?

Dave do you think this could have been a 6? In hindsight I think I should have risked the break out just to see what it could do, I could feel it was a good run!

I had a look through my notes.
For my normally aspirated runs in the high sixes,
all had a 330 time of around 4.45 to 4.47.
Willowbank began using 330 ft timers back in 1995
and the 1775cc blown engine, it was about a tenth quicker to the 330 for high sixes,
but 'generally' slower sixties.
But I never left at 7500 with those engines either!

But your mph is enough to see 120 on the 1/4,
which, with a little more work in the sixty should be enough to get you in the sixes.(and possibly 11.0's or tens on the 1/4).

Pete's car is a little closer to your combo,(with Rod's 2387cc engine) than my wierd thing:(heavy and big motor high rpm and bus box),
so his data may be more representative.

Thanks for the information Dave!

I might head over to Heathcote in the next few months to test over the quarter. The Wallace racing calculator says 11.1's based on most best time inputs, I guess I'll find out soon enough!

Congratulations to all the competitors, crew and spectators at VW Portland this year. Your commitment to VW drag racing and the VW scene in general is what keeps the dream alive. Thanks also to the club members and volunteers of SouthCoast Raceway, and the local businesses Ace Sheet Metal and Portland Laser Cutting for the excellent trophies.

Although the Portland weather did its best to try and spoil proceedings, it was to no avail, and two days of excellent racing ensued. The final of the Top VW Shootout was a perfect 7 second heads up affair with David O'Connor taking the win from Brad Young.

Mick Motors again made this weekend possible, and was well supported by Westside Mufflers, Rod Penrose Racing, Volkswagen Genuine Parts, Ace Oils, Ratmuller Racing and three of Australia's most active and progressive VW clubs - Club VeeDub Sydney, The Volkswagen Club of Victoria and the VolksEnthusiasts Club of SA. The Oz VW scene owes much to these businesses and clubs, whom without such weekends would not happen.

Round 2 of the VWMA series is VW Warwick on October 1st-2nd. Don't miss any of the action. See you on the track.

vid of WPVW supercharged bug @ Portland

Ben Ford has a little trouble as the WPVW supercharged bug leaves the line with wheels up . Ben was very nervous about his bug going straight after a recent incident at Warwick QLD and got off the throttle too quick , but got it all together to win the pass .

Dave looking foward to seeing you race at Heathcote. Its a good track, but not as sticky as Portland, a little bumpy thru the trap but has pleanty of run off and is easy on the brakes.

I will be away on holiday in the US till after the Easter but will be ready to race when I get back. I will let Mike know when when I get back so we can organise a few local VW racers to get over there.

I now need to give my oval a run over 1/4 mile with new setup. It should make high 11's now.

Steve and I will be upgarading Beetle Juice this year with a new motor now that the setup is good with the body and pan. It will be getting a 2300 methanol motor, Kombi box and MSE shifter. Steve has been working on getting the data logger in the car but ran out of time just before Portland. He is keen to get some runs in my Ghost on race fuel before he taclkles the new set up with methanol in Beetle Juice.

Welcome to the forum Andrew!
Can you share some specs on your car?
like what mods you have done to the engine and trans?
(might like to start a new topic including the rest of the specs on the Gringos team?)

Andrew,

Great to hear from you. I look forward to seeing the upgrades to the oval in the near future. It's already one tough package now, what are the plans for the old motor then?

The Grey ghost runs a 2338cc with CB Buuble top case and CB crank (busted the 20 year old scat crank at wawrick last year) 94mm Wiseco pistons 12.5compression ratio. Has 044 heads 44/37.5 valves with my own porting which took about three weeks on and of to do. Pauter 1.3 rockers FK98 cam and 51.5 Jaycee carbs. I have spent a lot of time on the engine setup especialy with the machining, head porting and tolerances. Its been a setup that I heve been playing with for just on two years. Box is a 1500 swing axel that I built myself with short Swayaway axles and Jaycee spool. It runs a Jamar front beam with Jamar discs barkes all round. The trany still runs standard gear ratios of which I will upgarade latter this year pending finances (hope to buy some Albins gears when I work out what ratios, maybee someone can suggest?) . The car is a 56 oval and is still all steel and will most likely remain that way. I have run a 12.4 pass with the old motor setup at Heahtcote but are looking to run its first 11 sec in a few months when I get back from the USA. Most importantly my dyno tune done By Darren Gill (Gilly) at Geelong carburetors who is a wizard with the race engine setups. We have spent some very valuble hours on the dyno making sure the engine is right throughout the rev range.

Old motor will go in the Manxter that I am building at the moment (de-tuned of course) and will be a fun vehicle to drive I hope.

Cheers
