Considering putting up the new stickers later today, just the forum sticker will go on the rear windscreen.
I'll leave it at that for now, may try and get a custom sticker done though...

We'll see what happens.

Also looks as though Thursday we'll be starting the guards and rewire job for the interior light. Shall be good!

Got these in the post on Monday, decided it was time to put them on Zelda! I never intended to put the Dub Invader sticker on her, but I thought it looked pretty good on the LHS rear window...

Geez it puts a smile on my face everytime I see one of those Aussieveedubbers stickers.
mainly because the one on the back window of my car is the mother to them all

All the ones Warb is selling over the last few years are made from a copy of the one on my car.
It's about the only surviving original from nearly 10 years ago.

Joel!

Ahaha that is awesome, well I am glad to say that a child of your own sticker is resting on the rear window of Zelda! :D

There will be lots of news tomorrow, as tomorrow begins the day of the guards and rewiring the interior light and door sensors.
Lots of photos will be taken no doubt!

Today was a very productive day indeed!

It all started this morning. I was up at 8am, a mate coming around at 9am. We got all the stuff that was needed. Sand paper, etch primer, enamel primer and of course, wires. All of this to fix up the rear guards and to wire in the interior light.

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0239.jpg

The aim was to clean up both of the blue rear guards that I had purchased and to finally finish installing the interior light. First we took off the light assemblies. Man there was a lot of dirt build up behind them!

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0241.jpg

I was lucky enough to find that the light assembly had already had a reverse light bulb installed, which is definitely handy!

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0245.jpg

But both light assemblies are extremely rusted and I'll most likely try and grab new ones from somewhere. Basically just need the actual "holder" as I already have the part that holds the bulbs and the plastic attaches to it...

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0250.jpg

After all of this, we cleaned up the guards before starting to sand them back! You can definitely see where the paint has faded and it hasn't!

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0251.jpg

And then started the sanding... and more sanding... and more sanding.

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0254.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0255.jpg

Then, while a couple of my mates were doing the guards, I jumped into the car and started playing with wires. Bloody hell these were annoying. Finally, after at least six hours of playing, I had it figured out. But this was after I had tried removing the glove box to get into and behind the dash fan thingy! We could actually see, if I removed the trunk lining, the section on the A pillar where we could run the coathanger with the wires attached! It definitely took us a lot longer than expected...

This was us first attempt, coming the wrong way!
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0270.jpg

But then, after a few more hours of playing around, we finally got all the wires up to the interior light and everything was working... Well, it wasn't. We couldn't figure out the freaking door sensor and where it's ground was!

One of my mates, after taking a break, came back and was just like, well hang on, we have to actually put them back into the body as the body is there ground. And then, tadah! She worked!

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0271.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0277.jpg

We then got all the wires sorted and tucked away under the dash, so that is definitely a bonus as well!
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0272.jpg

We all cruised down for dinner and I was happy to get back and just take this glory shot.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0278.jpg

I didn't, however, get a photo of the guards completely finished. They are sanded back and are ready to be primed when the time is available!

Took the misses out with her friends to a pub last night for her birthday.

Got home and well, took a look at the trunk lid. Massive dent in it, in the shape of someones arse. So obviously, while it was parked at the pub, someone had decided to either sit on her and pose, or stumbled onto her.

Either way, I punched the shit out of the dent and now it is gone. It was seriously the shape of an arse. I'll have to take a look sometime today when the sun is actually out to check the real damage. Zelda definitely has some bad luck. Something good happens, and then something bad, so far anyway.

Guess I just have to keep persevering...

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone can tell me what this is?

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0252.jpg

It's inside the engine bay, along the back firewall, there is this cutout for it and everything, I can get more photos if needed. Want to work out what it is for first though...

Ahaha that is awesome!

So it is somewhat like an ECU, minus all the tuning tools. It's a diagnostic "checker" for VW dealers somewhat 40 years ago.
Were VW the first to implement such a tool?

Love the fact that they got Buzz to do that commercial!

Sort of but not really.
It's basically just a continuity tester of various circuits and a few sensors to test things

Most of them have been chucked long ago like the float that sits in the battery to test the electrolyte levels and the Inductive pick up sensor that went on the #1 spark plug lead.

Amazingly mine still had that when I got it, I remember thinking WTF is this thing, thought it was part of a broken timing liight pick up.

There has been a huge number of threads over the years of people wondering what the TDC sensor in the crank case was.

Ah okay, so it solely checks various circuits and sensors, still though, that is pretty damn good for the 70's!

Yeah, originally my mates and I thought it was for a timing light, but guess not anymore...

It sounds like it is something that most people really have no idea about, but thank you for being able to fill me in! :)

You might not be able to see it, but this is where the massive arse dent was.

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0286.jpg

I used my fist to bump it out, but there are a few things that need to get beaten out by either someone professional, or I take the trunk off and grab a mallet and bump it out myself...

Donn, I couldn't agree with you more. I was devastated when I saw it, I couldn't believe someone would actually dent the crap out of her and not leave a note or anything. Probably some drunk bastard.

The fact is though, L bug bonnets are completely different to other bugs. Meaning they're a lot more difficult to find. So either I beat the rest out myself, or I pay someone else too, because I highly doubt I'll find another one in such good condition as mine is in (minus the arse dent that is).

Although, if it is possible, I'll see what I can do with mine first, and if worst comes to worst, I'll be sending you a PM... :)

While driving Zelda, and going from third to second, I keep slipping into fourth.
I am pretty sure this is because second and fourth are extremely close to each other, especially when my current gearstick is extremely loose.
Like, I can wiggle it when it is in gear, as if it was in neutral.

Now, is this a gearstick issue or a gearbox issue?
If I was to purchase a new gearstick, say a berg or csp shifter, would this fix all issues with it slipping into fourth instead of second?

Maybe I just shift too quickly with a stock gearshifter... :P

So my indicators had it this afternoon. Zelda was parked out in the elements last night and I blame this.

I went to check the fuses, and you'll never guess what I found. Water. Dripping.

So I thought I'd go to the source, where the fan is. I don't know what it is called though. But I ripped off the cover (nicely of course) and found this.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0289.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0290.jpg

And you can see the little build up on the lip of the lid.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0291.jpg

This is all the water in the fuse box cover, not good!
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0293.jpg

I tried to take a couple of photos underneath the dash to see whether or not there were any holes there, but I couldn't find any...
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0298.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0297.jpg

You can see the water on the carpet as well...
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0296.jpg

Another thing that could be causing this is the fact that I have no rubber seal on the bonnet? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated to fix this. I need to fix this as parking her under the carport, well, it is a bit difficult when I'm competing with Mum's Territory...

Looks like there's a small rust hole near the drain hose spigot, that lets water in.

All that dirt and leaves blocks the drain and holds moisture.

If it makes you feel any better about your hood it's not the original.
Thats a 75Lbug hood.

Looks like I'll be cleaning it out tomorrow morning and seeing what is going on!

Massive shock with the hood, like, massive!
What are the differences between the years?
What should mine look like?

It's only a cosmetic thing

73 and 74 Lbug have that classic curvy beetle pressing at the front either side of the handle, from 75 they squared it off more and put the big bump under the handle for some reason.

For a while there that was the only type hood available new so many ended up with them after accident repairs.

Ah okay, thanks Joel!

So I drove the misses home in Zelda, and well, weird shit was going down.
The indicators were working, but they weren't blinking. So we're one step closer to them blinking I would assume?

Regardless, I'll be up bright and early to clean out that box behind the dash/in the bonnet to see what I'm dealing with.

Went and did a little clean up of the thingy in the bonnet (what the hell is it called?!).

I found that there is a hole, a factory hole it looks like, and that's where the water has gone through. I cleaned up as much as I could but it got dark. Will do the rest tomorrow morning and see what else I can find.

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0317.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0312.jpg

The indicators got to one step closer to working, now the green indicator light in the speedo is working. But only sometimes. Wishful thinking that it'd just dry out and fix itself?
