Only got 3 runs in, so mixtures not quite sorted.
The track and dyno are always different for tune.
Started rich and was a good baseline,
then went back to the dyno setting,
it felt sharp, but lost a bit, since the run was out of shape.
Last run was the same tune and lost even more mph as it got cold.
So next step is to try a little more fuel, at an event where I can get a good number of runs.
10.735 @ 124.90mph
10.766 @ 125.11mph out of the groove in 1st and 2nd!
10.790 @ 123.97 felt good but mph down likely too lean.
Sixty foot times:
1.425
1.445
1.466
1/8 mile:
6.807 (pb)
6.848
6.834

Yes, dyno was near the coast,
but the air at the track was pretty good except higher humidity.
I am always a little cautious about making changes too soon without some thought,
or a clean run, of which the 2nd pass was not!
so the last two runs were the exact same tune as the dyno.
After seeing the mph drop like it did on the second run,
I am confident it needs a little more fuel at high rpm.

Hmmm... idling a bit roughly Dave. Clean the air filter???
I reckon it might need a new dissy cap and plugs.................
Plus the oil is too thick whichdefinitely makes them run roughly.............! Try a 38w insted of 40w eh?
Good lord I get a chubbie every time I see something new made for this engine. Astounding.
Cheers Dave!!!!

Do you know what caused the stub-axle to fail, Dave ?
According to a friend of mine, who once ran Borg Warner and knows a lot about steels used for axles, it is very difficult to get hold of 'good'
material these days.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Putting it down to fatigue, Greg.
Nearly 25 years of racing,
and it is just a VW part with the 930 flanges welded on.
Either way, looking at upgrades too,
since this could have been messy if it failed at speed.

Looks like the baffles in the tank have been restricting fuel flow.
This is the same tank that was in the car 25 years ago,
when PK used it for hill climbs, and all I have done was increase the outlet size.
I put a camera up there, (the tank), and it is certainly not good for mechanical injection.
So time for surgery.
Return lines should never be above the outlet.
Also, the volume available, should be more than the pump can draw, or else it can draw air.(3.6 GPM)
Over time the gaps in the baffles would re-fill the cavities, but not fast enough to keep up with the pump at high rpm.
On this tank, with these baffles, I had less than 3 litres available,(from 10lt tank)
which was barely enough for a 4 second dyno pull,
but not likely for a full 1/4 mile.
My blown combo must have just got by because I towed to the start, (full tank),and had virtually no return fuel aerating the supply, and lower pump
rpm.
