Basic empi exhaust is on and other ancillaries...just have to change the fuel lines to carbs (one inch short each side due to different banjo fittings
on carbs!) then hopefully I can fire it up (touch wood).

Sorry malcolm I never made moulds, I made them from scratch and didn't make a plug.
This link shows how I made them (not that hard, just messy and time consuming!)

Corvairs are a great motor. I remember some guys in Melbourne had one in their Type 3 - pics are in an old post somewhere. The main problem they had
was the fan belt breaking as it twisted up off the pulley over onto the flat pan. They recall many times when the fanbelt let go, how much more power
they had - and if they could've cooled it any other way they would've.

Cheers for that Dave. It will be some time before I get onto the splitty though (won't start it until we get a carport)....as you'll all know the $
and time disappear pretty quickly!
The work on the 1916 installation continues - oil pressure sender plumbed in and igntion leads connected. Carbs are finally on (wish there was more
room in a beetle engine bay!), and breather line from oil filler is in place. Filled it with oil tonight and set up the linkage - need to sort out
timing tomorrow or monday then synch carbs and hopefully it will be running again.

Engine ancillaries are all on and timing set (12 degrees initial and 28 total which are both adjustable (initial of course) along with vac advance).
Dialled in carbs roughly via synchrometer to balance each carb...fiddled with idle speed then set up linkage. Fired it up and voila - she's alive!
Took it around the block and apart from a bit of popping through the exhaust all is good. Tomorrow may get time to play with mixture so its not far
off being done now!

gotta admire someone whos built not only some great cars, is anal to the point that it's beyond belief, and then builds such a cool house around so
many garages and driveways - then incourages (in the words of Pete) other nutbars to come and use it all.
Alan, stop pissing about with hearing aids, start resto-ing cars for people will ya, you'd have a queue from Melberg to BrisVegas.

Alan, how did the type 1 feel against the type 4, when you drove it? Cheers Damo.

Damo, although I haven't had a chance to tune the 40 dells more precicely on the 1916 yet it is still quite a healthy motor. I noticed it gets up in
the rev range a lot faster which could be attributed to either the cam or the different exhaust configuration on the type I vs IV. I did notice a big
difference in the torque though - I guess all the anecdotal evidence of this trait of the type IV was true (I love that aspect of the 2L type IV).
I guess there was also a bit of "noise power" which could have confounded my evaluation - the type IV's exhaust has a much deeper and stronger note
which could have given the impression of more power/torque. Either way, I look forward to keeping the type IV and bumping up its displacement etc down
the track. I think the new owner will be happy with the 1916 though, it is much more fun than a 1600!

nonetheless as there MAY be a new project or two upcoming :P

Well, the ragtop is gone - big thanks again to the new owner - it is definitely going to a good home and will be driven (hard hopefully) as it was
built to do!
So time for the next project I guess! I look forward to the next issue of VWMA to see the ragtop grace the pages in full for keepsakes. Thanks for
your interest in this thread, stay tune for the next DIY resto!
