Spec's for Jak.

I think I have posted these on the forum somewhere in the past, but here goes. just remeber this....She's real mild!
1776cc, CW69 crank (Demello), 9lbs FW, BERG style pulley (by STOKER), Engle 120, Shimo 044 (7.5-1CR) heads (ex Keith Hausler!!!), BERG sump, CroMo P/Rods, Stock C/Rods, Home grown bolt together valve gear with BERG adjusters and an 09 with my old ALLISON (CRANE) ignition. As for the transaxle....Built by TRANSFORM and is basically the FREEWAY flyer. 4.12 R&P (I think!), stock 40hp ratios, Superdiff and some of the usual trick to tighten it up. HD side plate, modded shift forks, etc.....Home grown engine & trans mounts (BERG style). The rear tyre size I was using when I ran that time was a 205/60-15 on 7" FUCH. I think! And I did that time (@ Ravenswood) a few months after my last trip across Oz to Sydney (done the Nullabor 3 times in this car!) for the Nationals back in 94. Since then I have only been able to do a best of 15.2 @ Kwinana MP. Tracks not as nice as Ravo. Track is more suited to slicks I reckon! Oh and I've done over 200,000 k's on this engine with only the rings replaced once & the crank case replace when I cracked the second hand one I used on the first build up! For more details check out my http://www...Movies  to down load too!

FUCH your early!

Way Back Dave..Pg 1, You said

------------------------------------------------------
Steve Said,
I'll stand corrected by anyone who knows exactly what happened ...

Jeff Unwin with a 2.3 L (?)unregisterable "registered" beetle;

Then Stan Pobjoy/Peter Richards in a drag car with plates (to prove a point I think);

Then came the turbo cars of Mike Kristen and others I'm not sure of.

Please, somebody fill in the blanks.

------------------------------------------------------
Dave Said,
All of the above cars are NOT legally registered there full Drag cars.

Doug you will have to expand on exactly what specks you want

-----------------------------------------------------

Dave I think you should make sure of the facts before you write a post, I think you will find that the car of Mike Kristen refered to in this post is actually his old 2165 turboed black oval, BAD056 . This car was definatly street registed and legal, it was infact his daily driver. You should remember it as it beat you in the final for the vw bracket the same year he won the fastest street registed vw and also the trophy for the fastest reaction time recorded by a vw......Now I'll have a Crownie too

Hey Fraser,

Your ripping me off 80 cents, that was a dollar I gave you not 20 cents, and you promised you wouldn't tell!!!!!!!!!
I can't see what all the fuss is about. If anyone has any hassles with the legalities of my car being 100% street legal and registered let it be known, I can personally vouch for the last three years. It's 100% engineered, not once but twice after I made a few changes. I drive it down to Ulludulla regularly and it's made Nambucca twice, Goulburn, Wakefield Park club outings and events for 4 years as is! The motor has done 60 000 with the turbo and hasn't been touched. You can pip me for illegal headlight height but good luck with the rest. Remember some of us are enthusiasts, not mechanics or race car drivers. I'd be an imposter if I tried to pass myself off as anthing but a Hydrographer. Keep it fun people, you'd think their was money to be made!
How many sleeps till nambucca Chris!

All i can say is, if anyone has a doubt as to who is the fastest - bring a faster car to the nats next year and try and beat Leigh.
Then when YOUR name is on the trophy, and ONLY then, can you say what you like.
All cars have to be scruitineered to enter, and there is nothing wrong with Leighs car.
There may be a few jeolous people out there is all i can say...

Update for 2004

Most events were held at Oran Park in Sydney, which in the early days was a distance of 850 feet, which means nothing to anyone.

In or around 1993 I convinced the NSWHRA to reduce the track length to a standard 1/8 mile 660 feet, so as the times would be representative to other tracks around the world.

I have to check my OTHER records as some of these may be adjusted or added to.

In the early years of this trophy the STREET REGISTERED rules were vague to say the least. Jeff Unwin and Mr Berg discussed and determined the rules as such. These have and will be published each year prior to each event.

NO CORRESPONDANCE will be entered into.

Way back in 1999.

Hi E'one, this is a great web site! It's terrific to see so many people still enthusiastic about the humble V-dub. Reading this particular thread [I believe that's what it is called] prompted me to locate and peruse thru my old time cards. My last run in the car was at the VW Jamboree oh & those other fast 4s & rotary things way back in '99. My quickest run is as follows:60 ft - 1.692. 330ft- 5.064.
660ft- 7.915 @ 86.14 mph 1000ft -10.436.
Et.- 12.589 @ 104.34 mph.
Hope u find this interesting and I look foward to be back on the track and meeting many of you in person real soon,
Buy for now Craig Paton.

Rod Richardson's beetle clocked 12.293 at 106.71 mph in June this year.

It is a registered street car, 2276cc,48 ida`s, beetle all steel 61. I think Peter Page (Dak-A-Tak) was driving. Willowbank Jamboree this weekend so fingers crossed some 11second runs will be not too far away!

Use to be a 1916 fuel injected, turbo'd water-to-air intercooled street car. Was set up with an IRS setup, with LSD. Same car also lead the hillclimb class I believe.

Nitrous? Won't that discount your car as a street car?

I have to congratulate Adam Debaisi , that is a seriously quick streetcar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I was to run nitrous, that would put me in the same class as a turbo car. It would run in the forced induction class at the drags! Not sure of the letters they use to catagorize the classes. I think the forced induction 4cyl class use to be SS/CC. Your right though as far as legalities go, nitrous is illegal on the street and therefore my car would not be deemed as a streetcar! [legal anyway]
But I'll stik to normally aspirated stroker!

Stage 1 on my Richards/Pobjoy engine should hopefully get me pretty competitive again!

Cheers Craig. :):o

I used a bad description there. Adam Debaisi's green turbo beetle.

Nitrous is illegal on the street. However, nitrous kits can be legal to have on the street, depending how they are installed. There must be a physical break in the line so they can't just be "turned on" fast and furious style. Rules are different for different states.

It would be fun, there is no doubts there though to have the bottle plumbed and ready to push that button.

Are you going to have your new engine ready for the nationals? That is coming up fast as far as engine building time goes.

VW Nats

Hey VWfastback,

Well if e/thing goes to plan I'd love to get to the Nats!
I'd like to meet in person a lot of guys on this site that I've conversed with.
Never been before, but if I was to go it'd be to race.
Not likin the idea of towing all that way from Toowoomba.
I reckon that would be a 18hr drive towing. YUK!

Looks like I have sponsorship from our local VW dealership to supply a tow car. I was hoping to get a Touareg but it may be a T5 Transporter!! Can't winge about that!!
When is the Nats on next year? So I can stik it in my diary.

Cheers Craig.

Hi All,

Not in Australia....but in the Us there is a club called the DKP club...old school dragers.....in the old days to be a member all cars had to run under 13 and normally aspirated....not as strick now.....here is the link to members rides....mad read.
Note how heaps of them have magnetos.....old school.
