How is extracting every last horsepower out of an engine cheating ? I would call it smart.

After each run on the 1/4 mile some of the coolant will be dumped & a quantity of ice added to keep the intercooler temp. down.

I know it's common practice, but that's kinda cheating. It'd be nice to see what the CAR can do, not tricks... IYKWIM

That would be like saying to all the rotary racers not to take out your drivers side headlights to get a cool charge to the turbo!!
Let's be realistic here, at the end of the day your chasing a number, to get the lowest 1/4 mile time and where else are you going to do it anyway.

You've got to use every opportuntity to your advantage

as previously mentioned the gearshift bracket had to be removed from the tunnel as the hole for the tunnel bush was flogged out . pic shows the bracket removed from the tunnel

Yeah... but I'm a great believer in running cars in 'true' street trim. No seats or panels removed, no funny fuel, no 'cheating'. Straight off the street, as driven everyday. Just my opinion and I have far more respect for people who do it that way (although not many do!)

you know you don't have to cut a hole in the tunnel to do that repair, you just drill out the spot welds..

you would think a vw specialist would know that

after sanding the tunnel area around the gearshift hole there were no evident spot welds . on further inspection and feeling around in the opening it was found that the internal bracket had been welded in several places around the edge . I am aware that they are normally spot welded but I had no choice as to the approach that I took to this repair .

as previously mentioned , after each run down the strip some of the coolant will be dumped and ice added to cool down the intercooler temperature . pic shows the coolant drain hose that exits down through the pan via a golf heater tap . this makes it very quick and easy to dump off the coolant when not on the track .

Nice buildup... its been a while since i've read the forums and its great to see an awesome build up in progress.

Got a couple of questions ... with the decompression spacers how much deck height did you end up running?

Which engine management are you going to run? I'd live to see someone dare to run an autronic and be the first in australia to have traction control on a 350 RWHP VW!

Got a kaffier brace? a berg traction bar just aint going to cut it when your looking to turn about the 350 hp mark.. there are some good 5 link systems showed on the germanlook forums and now's the time to fit it... Otherwise your going to snap that tranny like a twig, regardless of the berg bits.

When it comes to getting the car to hook up on the 1/4, there is some good info on setting up K+L + swing axel combinations on mufflermikes website. Front and rear suspension tuning. He's running in the 11.90 class with a pull thru 2332 turbo.

About your intercooling, just having a nice sized resivour is enough to keep the air charge cool for the 1/4. Mine is about 6 litres (not counting whats in the lines. I haven't run ice yet, but havn't needed to. 22 degrees ignition at 17lb boost on 98 octane, no detonation.

Now its winter in cairns, I see air temps around the 25 degree mark at full boost. Having an over rated intercooler means that regardless of boost I see very little change in air temps. You should see simular performance considering the size of your core. I'd imagine its even better down south where its cooler.

g'day wayne.

congratulations on an awesome build up and thanks for sharing the process and details with us on here.

i met you when you were in melbourne for day of the volkswagen last year, we were talking about the exhaust options for t4 engined bugs....

looks like its coming along very well, mate.

i too am having some engineering dilema's with mine, maybe i will give you a ring to have a chat as you seem to have alot of experience with type 4s going into beetles.

anyhow, keep up the good work and the pictures

wayne are you using the engine iol system to cool the turbo,s bearings or a seperate system.when I was looking at turbo charging the type 4 I found some porsche,s were using a cnc machined pump to have a seperate oil circuit mainly with the porsches their turbos are mounted low as well and had trouble with the oil back to the motor.its good to see the end is near when doing a major job.

the deck height ended up at 7.5mm . I am running a microtec fuel & ignition management system . yes I do have a rear engine brace ( will post pics later ) . I know that using the reservoir is sufficient for 1/4 mile drags , my intensions are to use the ice between runs to get the coolant temperature back down , however I dont think it will get very hot all . great to hear that your system is working so well .:P

I am using the engine oil system to lubricate and cool the turbo . the oil will return into the L/H/S rocker cover at this stage .
